The shield was often used offensively. Also by holding the sword at the point end, you get a very useful bludgeon to use against armour.

However the sword was more effective against your average unarmoured foe. Turning the sword around was for the occasional armoured foe.

But a mace isn't particularly good against chainmail, unlike a sword.

A sword isn't particularly useful against chainmail either. Mail was generally used to protect against slashing things, like swords.
But swords have a thrusting tip as well, unlike a mace. And mail is pretty bad against thrusts.
