What is the point of dehumanizing other people ? What is the point of treating others with disrespect ? Shouldn't your superior culture, or identity be helpful towards other humans ? Why do you think your country is great? If it is great shouldn't it be known for respecting human rights human dignity, human life ? Shouldn't this be the reason to be proud of your country and identity in the first place?

They worship death and get off on suffering. It's the simplest, most correct conclusion, moreso than nationalism, white supremacy, misogyny or anything else.
AlwaysCloudyInGermany
I don't know what's not to understand... Look at Poland. Not taking any muslim refugees. The crime rate is around 2-3%, Germany is 12-13%(Eurostat report). We used to be safer in Germany 20 years ago than today.
People here got radicalized against refugees, because the 2% who are problems did not get instantly deported. And if you do crime and don't get any punishment for it, it will only increase crime which again radicalizes people against all refugees, even against the good ones.
ontarioOT
They ARE assholes. Using nationalism just gives them a reason to do it, rather than admitting that they're a shitty person. It's enough of a fig leaf that they can convince themselves that deep down, they're a good person and their hatred is justified. People do the same thing with religion or so-called "pro-life" activism.

I have never understood national pride, or feelings revolving around a persons location. Same thing goes with extreme fanatics of their regional sport team or even regarding religion. Those people have a strange deep rooted mentality of 'mine is better than yours'. The kind of people that follow simply because they are taught that way like some kind of herd animal. It feels like there is a severe lack of objectivity, creativity, critical thinking, etc and it's kind of scary.

It's just tribalism with a larger tribe. I think the only thing that would ever bring humanity together would be having to cooperate to fight off a hostile alien threat. And as soon as the threat was removed we'd go back to infighting.

nationalism is for losers. seriously, it is for people who suck, drug users, losers, people who can't keep a job. "patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel." it is for people on the bottom rung of the ladder who cannot get it together to succeed in life. then they say "ENGLAND IS FOR WHITES ONLY" as if this pride will cover up their horrible shame that they know that they are pathetic losers who have never succeeded, never accomplished anything significant, never done anything useful
TheDoctorCrankenstein
A lot of needless stray shots to make your point really undermine yourself here.
People who can't keep a job are usually victims of our unjust and exploitative society, such as the mentally and physically disabled. Drug users are also victims of our society just trying to stay sane in an oppressive reality.
But yes, nationalism is for losers who fail to succeed who'd rather hide their shame than admit to their faults and those of the society they identify with.

ErindorGhostPope
It was never about national pride. The racism is the point.
RufusPimperton
I'd argue at one point it was about pride. "Nations" as we use the term today is crazy new in the context of history and was not codified as the standard model for a state until the 1940s. It was originally an inclusive philosophy around an artificial identity. The issue now is, anyone who identifies as a nationalist is guaranteed to be a bigot who wants to exclude people from the established national identities.
Haemaelaeinen
I am a nationalist. I'm not a racist though. I like having many different countries with different cultures and languages. I want that my Finland continues to be it's own thing. I also know we need immigration because otherwise our numbers dwindle until no one is Finnish anymore. Also, introducing new DNA into the population is always good, otherwise everyone is each other's cousin and that makes for stupid people (like racists tend to be).
fdoyl001
that's not really true. the original premise of nationalism was "my people should govern themselves". it was, and in many places still is, a response to imperialism.
it's a phase cultures may need to go through, like teenagers expressing their independence to prepare for adulthood, but eventually you need to grow out of it, or it becomes toxic.
RufusPimperton
Nations are so much younger than people realize. The modern idea of nationhood didn't exist until the 1800s and wasn't the global standard until the wake of WWII when the nation-state became the agreed upon model.
Debadguy
Nationalism is seen as a permissible excuse in society to get angry and release aggression onto those who are different. Let's the monkey brain go wild on others for a little bit without ramifications. Some people really like being angry, as it makes them feel powerful and in control.
IMakeLotsOfReferencesAndRemakes
It was never about logic either. So trying to comprehend it that way never really leads anywhere. They hate anything that is "other" to them.

It’s about “my team is better than your team”. And that comes from tribal mentality. And that comes from being a pack animal.
Nationalists are just literally so stupid they can only rely on the most basic evolved instincts hard-baked into our brains.
Having a nationalist’s brain is like having a computer with just the BIOS. It technically can be useful. But realistically isn’t.

Also, dehumanization is a way to simplify complex psychosocial and socioeconomic situations in a format that relieves people from any sense of guilt or responsibility.
People do it all the time without even realizing that they’re doing it, and group mentality makes it that much easier to deny that it’s even happening.
With religions like Christianity, getting everyone on the same dehumanizing nationalist train is what it’s been structured to do, as history has proven time and time again.
Jinxer13
And the thing with tribalism is it will desperately find any possible outlet to be expressed. People literally fight stab and occasionally kill each other over their team kicking a ball in a net. The amount of instinctual investment people put in their "chosen team" is astounding. Politics is no exception.
astrangehop
Like, I'm not evolutionary biologist, but i can guess that we had 10000 years of group cohesion being the most important thing and it got hard coded in with a lot of good stuff. Having a handle on objective truth is great, but getting expelled from the community is a death sentence for you abd your offspring.

My 10 yr old got mad after we cheered for a kid on the other team at his last baseball game. Said we were rooting for the enemy. I said no, we were cheering for a kid that did a good job that happened to be on the other team. So this is a mentality I’m familiar with, I just suspect most people outgrow it.
Audasity
when my son was in competitive marching band, the culture they promoted was we cheer for all of the teams they competed against. especially because at a local/state level, they crushed almost everyone else. they wanted to foster being a gracious winner. and, at a regional and national level, we got a lot of comments from other teams saying how awesome it was we cheered for everyone. and, in the end, ALL of those kids deserve to be cheered on, because they ALL worked hard to get there.
Tarmaccian
This is correct, and one of the few comments here that isn’t problematic.
Nationalists have learned to value “winning”, more than reaching a goal. They value team allegiance and loyalty more than following rules or even improving humanity. If tearing others down makes them feel like they “win”, they will.
Critically, that victory-oriented perspective means they see opponents and outsiders as naturally inferior, rather than as fellow humans… a view that is disturbingly common on Imgur as well.
Xomoh
It's easy to see this mentality in people you disagree with. It can be much harder to see it in those you agree with. There are plenty of people who are on the left here on imgur and in the world because it's simply the team they picked. Had a couple things gone differently in their lives, they would fit easily into MAGA. It's important to look out for this trait in others because we need to be cautious of those people, but also to search for it in ourselves because we must grow beyond that.
ricbri695
Anyone who isn’t willing to question their own beliefs, or able to justify them to others, needs to look a little deeper at what they believe and why. This goes for politics, religion, etc

How do they keep you alive? It's a line, if the line moves 500 feet further away you see no benefit, if it moves 500 feet closer you see no detriment. It's the idiots who want to kill you for being from the wrong side of the line that are the problem.
