Marriage Equality ≠ Real Equality

Okay, I'm a gay man, and I have a bone to pick with the whole "marriage equality" thing...

Marriage for us gay people is great, but I'm scared that people might think that marriage equality means total equality

The problem is that 29 state still have no discrimincation protections for gay people on the books

And anti-sodomy laws still exist on the books in 18 states (although the Supreme Court has thankfully invalidated them)

There is still hate for gay people in the United States, ranging from religious fanatics...

... to someone just using the word "fag" in a derogatory manner

Too many young people, like these pictured here, have killed themselves because they felt they could never be accepted as gay

So don't be deceived by this logo, which implies marriage equality means total equality... it doesn't

Equality for marriage a good start, but real equality is something that will be much harder to achieve. It isn't won with Supreme Court decisions, or when laws are passed... it's won when a gay people don't have to fear for their personal safety, or their jobs... when they don't feel the pressure to kill themselves because they don't belong. It's won when a young gay children can come out to their families without fear of rejection, among many other ways. Until then, there is no true equality.
