Fun fact, in Germany it is illegal to protest with your face covered up. Logic being that if you use your free speech, you should stand behind it and not hide. Actually caused a huge legal issue around religious dress codes like hijabs and burkas since in that case religious freedom was directly at odds with their ability to protest (gotta take the hijab off to protest but religious freedom says you can't be forced to take it off)

What's the reason *they* give for masking up? I think cowardice and inability to identify, but I'm sure they have a perfectly logical, to them, reason.

Just the identify thing. They dont want to lose their jobs. They know that if they got found out on social media they'd lose their jobs that day. Also all these white nationalists are in a federal database. Same as any "antifa" thanks to that now being a terrorist org.
