Sheriff Sunshine

Our family dog of 9 year passed today. Her name was Sunshine. And we found out about a month ago she had bone cancer and within 3 weeks a lump on her wrist grew to lemon size and we found another lump on her back leg (also on her right side). It had gotten to the point where she could hardly get down the stairs despite pain meds. She was such a good dog and has stopped three robberies earning the nick name Sheriff, and always keeps us safe from the mail man. I'm gonna miss her but I'm so glad to have gotten to have her in my life and just wanted to show ya'll how adorable she is. This picture was at behavior class graduation our first year with us.

Her on her first pet bed

She had upgraded a few years ago to old cushions from a couch we got rid of. It's gonna break my heart to throw them out.

Always ready to play

She would help herself to my old toys.

But damn she just looked so cute I let her keep them.

She was spoiled

She expected all food to be shared. And understood words like McDonalds and hamburger (double cheese burgers plain and dry) and eggs, and of course treat.

She was happy

She was happy. We were happy. She was such a good dog.

All dogs go to heaven and don't you let anyone tell you otherwise. She's off patrolling the big house in the sky. Rest easy, sheriff.

This is why I will always treat my rescue like a queen.

Beautiful friend, OP. I am sorry for your loss.

Dogs become family & there's a huge hole in our hearts when they leave. My deepest condolences, OP. I'm glad that you had her in your life.

So very sorry for your loss!

It's always the worst thing ever to put away or throw out the old cages and beds of your pets. Condolences, OP.

I pulled apart our kennel and used the wood in places and can still smell my lab, brings back nice memories.

Oh I know, it's heartbreaking. I buried my dachshund with his squishy bed. At least he was comfortable in his final resting place.

We will probably adopt again but it may not be terribly soon.

Do you know what kind of dog she was? She looks like a beautiful Rhodesian ridgeback

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So was her mom she was the only one that turned out red.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We don't know what else. When we're first adopted her two of her siblings were also up for adoption and the where both black and white. Odd!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well she was part boxer but we have always thought she looked like a Ridge back and her hair use to stand up when she felt threatened but

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same with my dog haha. She's beautiful either way, be happy that you were there for the majority of her life. She'd want you to be happy

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Would she want you to throw out the cushions? No. She'd want you to fill the hole in your heart with a dog she'd will her toys to them.

Who's cutting onions?!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The only problem with getting a new dog is we have cats so we would probably have to get a puppy and teach it to leave the cats alone.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Or a dog that already knows how to leave them alone OP!

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And the problem with a puppy is I'm usually off a college (I'm home for the summer) and I don't know if my parents have the energy.

There are some good 5 year + dogs that need a home. Shelters and rescues usually know whether or not the dog is good with cats.

Maybe keep opening your home to senior dogs and giving them a great last few years? They are often ignored by others.

You sir made me start bawling.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Found it once and it pulls at my heartstrings every time. Didn't mean to make you cry though, my apologies.

I'm waiting until i graduate next May and the first irresponsible thing I'm doing is adopting my first dog. :)

You know they say the best thing to do when you start living on your own is to get a dog, and then try to be the person they think you are.

My studies would not get done with this bird on my book.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bonus: Picture of said bird (also named Sunshine) http://imgur.com/kib2kXG

Right now I have me and my bird. I'm getting my MSW in 1 year (38 credits and 600 internship hours). I don't have time for a pup...yet. :)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get an older dog OP! They're usually already trained, and the shelter can tell you if they're used to cats!

I've gotten both of my dogs at the shelter, and both were housetrained and new several commands already.
