My guess is both lubrication and preventing heat transfer. The fuse likely provides heat when triggered, so keeping heat down is wise.

2) FYI, a thermo nuke needs a regular nuke to 'detonate' (start fusion reaction) it. Detonator>HE>regular nuke>thermo nuke.
