He said he always did what was scripted first. Then ad libbed on other takes. The ad libs are generally what made it into the show.

They did. Season 9 was originally a spin-off, but was later changed to season 9 after it was cancelled.

Try watching Dexter again but skip seasons 3, 6, and 7 (make sure you watch a recap of 7 though before going into 8). It works a LOT better.
