Lantern Corps: Part 2, Red Lanterns

Red Lantern Corps

The Red Lanterns wield the powerful and dangerous red light of rage, and they are my favorite of all lantern corps.

Origin

Before the Green Lanterns, the Guardians of the Universe used the robotic Manhunters to keep order in the universe. After Krona (one of the Guardians) sabotaged the Manhunters, they massacred almost the every trace of life in sector 666, only 5 survived the slaughter, they would be known as the Five Inversions.

The Inversions blamed the Guardians for the slaughter Sector 666, and acted against them until they were captured and imprisoned. Among the Five Inversions was one by the name of Atros (pictured). His anger at the loss of his family and home, and over their imprisonment was so immense, that Atros murdered the other Inversions and used their blood to forge the first red power ring and battery, and, taking the name Atrocitus, became the first Red Lantern.

Membership

Like most other Corps, Red Lantern recruitment is done purely by red power rings seeking out those with great rage in their heart. It should be noted that the rage of Red Lanterns is NOT mere anger, rather it is more akin to righteous fury, it is rage fueled by injustice or loss.

Power

Along with the general set of powers all power rings bear, a red power ring also not only has power unique to the red light of rage, but being far to the edge of the emotional spectrum, has a drastic effect on any who wear one.

Upon putting on a red power ring, the chosen's mind is consumed by intense, unending feral rage, leaving them barely able to communicate at all and more than willing to attack anything and everything near them, including each other. The only exceptions to this are Atrocitus himself and Rankorr, the first human Red Lantern (both Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner had used red power rings prior to Rankorr's joining but this was brief and they never actually joined the Corps). Should a feral Red Lantern be baptized in the blood lake of Ysmault, their sanity will be restored, allowing them to use their power to its full potential.

The ring also stops the wearer's heart (its life support function taking its place) and corrupt the blood with the light of rage. Because of this, should a Red Lantern's ring lose power or be removed, it would mean their death. The only way to safely remove a red power ring is by a blue power ring, which can cleanse the rage from their blood and restore the heart.

The unique powers of a red ring are as follows:

Rage plasma- Red Lantern's are capable of regurgitating their own rage corrupted blood, which has been described as a mix of napalm and acid. It can burn through virtually anything and burn anywhere. This plasma can also corrupt the power of other power rings with rage, drastically weakening them and reducing their power supply.

Rage Empowerment: Like many others such as Hope and Fear, Red Lantern's power can be enhanced by the rage of those nearby.

Enhanced regeneration: power rings in general offer enhanced healing capabilities, but red power rings seem capable of taking this a step further. Rage dependance

Because their rings keep them alive, Red Lanterns are dependent on their inner rage. Should their rage weaken or should they feel love (the opposite of rage) their power rings will reject them and attempt to seek out replacements.

Constructs

Though as with other power rings, Red Lanterns have the potential for using constructs, they normally cannot. Why this is is debatable, but it simply isn't normally possible. Not even Atrocitus, the founder of the corps, or Guy Gardner who left the Green Lanterns and joined the Reds and who had great experience in using constructs, could not normally use them at first. Only Rankorr (pictured) showed the capability to naturally use constructs. It was only by drinking the blood of a Red Lantern who could use constructs that other Reds gained the ability.
