This morning I picked up my Secret Santa's gift at the local post office. While handling the parcel over to me, the postal clerk warned me there was sand trickling down out of the box. Remembering that Anthrax would rather resemble white powder I recklessly accepted the consignment and took it home.

After having left a trail of sand from the post office to my place like Hansel and Gretel in the dark forrest I was surprised to still see sand trickling down.

Apparently sending a box of sand also raised the custom's attention. Here's the little bumper saying, that the German state has already had a little look. Thank you, Mother Merkel for taking care of me. However, given the weight of the parcel this must have been a pricy joke (if it is a joke) considering the shipping costs. Who and why on earth?

Bursting with curiosity I eventually opened the box. More sand. But also a letter.

"Hello from a poor Floridian who wanted to participate in Secret Santa! Unfortunately I wasn't able to put much in, but you get some coal in case you weren't too good this year! I know you like to travel, so hopefully one day you can reunite our sand with it other grain buddies! I work at dunkin donuts, so this year, your elf on the shelf will be popping out of a box of munchkins aka donut holes. Sorry for the poor gift, but I hope you like it! - Secret Santa - "

I haven't received Christmas presents in a while after being considered an adult. So finding myself with curiosity and smiling on this letter brought up some belated Christmas spirits I haven't had all December.

Mystery solved. Unfortunately a jar broke on his journey and released its content, sand, basically all the way from the US to Germany.

My Secret Santa was right. I love travelling, I do it as often as I can. My grandparents and parents have always encouraged me to do so, as they had been hindered to leave Poland (where they're from) during the Communist regime. From every journey I bring back a little bit of sand and shells (or rocks and dried plants). What a surprise to receive a thoughtful gift like that from a complete stranger. Maybe it's not uncommon to collect sand, but again having in mind the shipping costs to provide such gesture, the mere idea touched me.

But there was more:

Vegetable soap wrapped in a music box, ...

...An "Elf on the Shelf", ...

... Coal in case I have been naughty, which is far better than being punished by Santa's servant Ruprecht, who in German folklore would punish naughty children by putting them in his sack. :-) However, there was still the broken jar and one lovely idea I needed to preserve. ...

So I found an empty jar, gathered up all the sand and shells into it.

And that's how my Secret Santa's thoughtful gift will accompany me on my shelf throughout the year.

Remember the Elf on the Shelf?

I found him an airy spot in my place. :-) Elf-tax if you like.

Just think, now you can tell people you own beach front property.

Unlike the Coal they get from Merkel.

He definitely should have packed the jar better (I didn't see any bubble wrap or anything like that), but it was an honest mistake, I guess.

Plot twist: The jar was boxed up already shattered to simulate the "fun surprises" often found on the Florida beach

I'm from Florida but currently living in Germany, so the sentiment in this gift really hit me. Very sweet! Now I'm homesick again, haha. :'(

Where in Germany are you living? And for how long? Hope it's not your new surroundings making you feel that way.

I think this was my favorite Secret Santa story!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did onions come in the box? There's no other reason why there would be liquid in my eye.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

No, there was a bit of dust in there, it's making my eyes all watery! Yep, dust; no other reason! ::weepy::

Did they even attempt to cushion the jar? Don't see any in the photo.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Likely thought having it packed full would keep things from jolting around, didn't consider it being dropped. Moving house vs shipping.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

To be honest I kinda think it's cooler that the jar leaked. Now there's a little bit of that sang all over. Idk that Just seems neat to me

Sand*

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was a really thoughtful gift. It kills me the jar of sand broke. :(

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But now you have glass shards in your sand. Just like the real Fort Lauderdale. This makes your gift more authentic.

8 years ago | Likes 1206 Dislikes 2

As a long time (but ex) Floridian, this is true.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or maybe he has larger pieces of sand in his sand?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That makes me both laugh and cry as a Floridian.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Me also.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hopefully the sand made it smooth now lol.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Lol I was thinking the same thing in the pictures with it all broken together and mixed up. "Wow, that's like, perfectly authentic!"

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@op right about now?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love how this gift cost close to nothing but it's worth so much more. It's a story. "That jar on the shelf? That's from sand Florida!"

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Yes!!!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hehe Being a diligent German or course I have screened the sand :) but thanks for the description of Fort Lauderdale’s beach :)

8 years ago | Likes 259 Dislikes 0

It just means you now have a sampling of the beach from 70 years ago instead of today. :P

Kein problem, mein kumpel

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I just have this image of them with tweezes. "Eins. Zwie. Drei. Feir. Funf..." as they go through each and every grain of sand to be sure.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What a thoughtful gift. Pretty cool to think about the sand being scattered along the way. It's seen more of the world than I ever will!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

'Jay, I thought the same thing. And w/grandparents unable to travel due to communism, the sand leaving traces along the way... the feels!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sand, you say?

"Keep government hands off my anthrax!"

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

"Thanks for checking there's no drugs in there". I once send whole chocolate egg (finnish) to friend in Macedonia. They had cut it open! :(

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which was poopy, since it's the type of chocolate egg they make by pouring chocolate inside real, empty (and clean) eggshell.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

pretty OP was making a joke

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The us government would never admit to checking a citizen's mail, though. Even if it was anthrax. :P

Wife and I have a tradition when we travel. We drink Jones soda then fill them with the ocean water and beach sand. Writing time and date.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I used to do that, then the lids rusted out after 5 years. Smelled like rotten fish.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Maybe wax seal?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Germany customs is no joke. Mine took a week to get through. PS that was the worst packing job I have ever seen. no wonder it broke.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I love this one. Shame about the jar; at least a lot of sand made it to you. It turns out that bubble wrap is for more than stress relief.

8 years ago | Likes 291 Dislikes 0

It is? But noone uses it to other stuff, do they?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Im perturbed theirs no bubble wrap or brown paper cushioning

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah my first reaction was no wonder it smashed if it was sent like that

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I bubble wrapped my gifts, I'm still worried they broke. He gets it today though so hopefully he'll find they are in tact

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

So... politely broken if broken? ;) (in tact)

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

As someone who works in shipping I find it interesting that some people take packing for granted.

8 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 0

They shouldhave marked the box Frageelay

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Is that some kind of tea?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Must be Italian.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah but it's going to Germany not Italy.
