Radiation reading of 6.7 uSv/h

Bags of radioactive soil are stacked one on top of the other to save space

Cows started to get white spots on their skin soon after the accident. One farmer believes this is due to the cows eating contam

“Nuclear energy is the energy of a bright future” reads the sign

6.7? You could be there for over a fortnight without much risk (<1Sv). People are such pussies about radiation.

I'm all for nuclear pwr but these things should be 100% tsunami, zombie, proof and able to shut down quietly if humans decided to walk away.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, earthquakes and tsunami are very much to blame. The effects of the reactor were (although devastating) not the lions share by any means.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Reading into it, they were not adequately prepared for natural disasters because they feared the backlash from deeming nuclear energy unsafe

Nuclear power is pretty safe. It only becomes catastrophic when combined with gross and downright criminal human negligence.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Or Mother Earth throws an earthquake at you.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The earthquake was anticipated. So was the larger than protected from tsunami.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Problem was they didnt implement any of the recommended or required safety upgrades

Just because incidents like this can happen doesn't mean nuclear energy isn't the best energy source currently available. It just is.

Not pictured: Hundreds of annual mining-related deaths and the massive pollution from coal-burning plants.

11 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

It's the same with cars vs planes. Plane accidents make the news because they're rare, even though they're statistically far safer than cars

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yes, nuclear energy IS the "energy of a bright future" at the moment it is our only pollution free energy source capable if replacing (1)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Our current fossil fuel based electricity production infrastructure at least in the short term

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just find it amazing how quickly nature reclaims the city

11 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 2

Radiation...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

I mean yeah there's radiation, but aside from causing the city to be abandoned it didn't have anything else to do with the reclamation?

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Never seen the Simpsons episode where they add plutonium to the field so that plants grow faster? (that was the joke)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope. It's constant human intervention that keeps nature at bay. It only takes a few years for overgrowth to occur.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of Crysis 3

Imgur-relevant: One banana equivalent dose is 0.098 μSv, the radiation from one banana.

uh... that doesn't make sense. (7 µSv/h) / (0.1 µSv/bna) = 70 bna/h, or did I miss something?

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

6 microsieverts is in the range of a dental xray, according to wikipedia

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In addition to acting as an international measurement standard, the banana contains potassium-40 which is slightly radioactive.

11 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 1

K

11 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 2

All that means is that it has additional measurement capabilities. What a wonderful device!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hmm, so me getting exposed to 100 mSv last year probably was a bad thing is what I'm getting from this

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's more than two bananas!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always go back to this from XKCD whenever I need to put relative radiation dose in perspective: https://xkcd.com/radiation/

11 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I'm not smart enough to put this in perspective. I'll try studying it some more.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hooray. Now I can apply for a job in the Iranian nuclear program.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

nice chart, i still don't understand radiation properly :o

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The amount shown is less than a chest CT every month.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think this should be an argument against nuclear power. Disasters do happen, but this area will recover and advancements should be..

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Made in the area of nuclear reactors.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In fact, nuclear is the most efficient and safest energy around BUT as radiation is invisible, the "renewable" lobby can scare people easily

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Renewable is good, too. Nuclear energy is probably the best way to transfer from fossil fuels and give time for advancing solar and wind.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Nah. Takes up way to much space and is fucking unreliable. Nuclear on the other hand has an absurd high ratio of energy per unit of fuel

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I disagree. The heat pollution and mining necessary for nuclear power isn't as ideal as renewables, but they still need time to advance.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Is Nuclear energy not safe, or were the power plants not up to code? Is this a by-product of the tech itself, or human error?

11 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 4

Human error: A test was being conducted, Control rods that should never be removed from the reactor were pulled out to speed up the test.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Nuclear energy is safe. Greedy power companies made it unsafe. But then again, greedy corporations can make almost anything unsafe.

11 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

when will we learn? it's not safe. there will always be human error. there will always be contaminated waste. we are smarter than this!!!!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It also used previous generation reactors, very old outdated things

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Watch "Pandora's Promise" on Netflix. It's a documentary all about why past reactors have failed, and why nuclear is actually safe.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

TEPCO (owner of Fukushima) falsified nuclear power plant safety documentation hundreds of times.

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

The plant only had a 6 meter sea wall, which was not enough. Another plant, Onagawa NPP, had a 14 meter sea wall and was fine.

11 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 0

Onagawa actually served as a shelter for the surrounding area after the quake

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was fine for 99% of waves.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Had the back up generators not flooded from the tsunami, the plant would have avoided the meltdown. Poorly chosen location and design

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Nuclear energy is one of the safest energy sources available, solar and geothermal's probably the only things safer right now

11 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 2

safe until someone accidentally digs up the nuclear waste in 200 years. or another powerplant explodes (maybe in central europe?) etc

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Last I looked nuclear is the safest form of energy, statistically speaking. And the safest industry to work in.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There were known issues with this particular reactor since the 70's (fixed in all subsequent designs) but even in Fukushima, the accident1/2

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

will have virtually no effect on anyone's health. Aside from Chernobyl, nuclear "disasters" are usually more psychological than physical 2/2

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the "disaster"(which was none, to be honest) was that the quake and tsunami had a far greater magnitude than anyone ever though about.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Nuclear is safe. Japan is along a very active fault line. Many nuclear plants in Japan & Korea are still ok & safe.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nuclear energy is extremely safe, as long as regulations are followed. This company cut corners to save costs resulting in failures.

11 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 1

The tsunami took out the coolant pumps causing the reactors to meltdown. Also a pressure release valve failed causing a gas explosion.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Then to cool the reactors they pumped sea water onto them like a fire hose but had no way to contain the contaminated runoff.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So they built hundreds of massive tanks to hold the contaminated water.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It would be safer without any nanny-state big-government regulation and just let it be governed by the free market.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 9

Free market quickly becomes unfree, when those with money can just prevent anyone from undercutting them

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't disagree with you there but now we have social media and can get the word out when people suck so there's that which is nice.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Complaining when the people you're complaining about have a monopoly on an item you need does you nothing.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In addition to @Endlogic's point, the ones with money already control social media. Just like they control the news and most of television.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

in europe we have weekly news about nuclear plants not following code. thus most powerplants are really not "extremely safe". reality > code

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You could fly a plane into a modern reactor containment building and the plane would just disintegrate

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

maybe, maybe not. we've never tried and the company tells us it's safe. but they lie constantly. so many powerplants have cracks, leaks, etc

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually they have tried it, look on YouTube. They flew an f14 tomcat into one and its titanium backbone disintegrated

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah thats europe. In the US nuclear plants are extremely safe because we do follow regulations.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

three mile island

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Three mile island took place in 1979, before current regulations existed.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Airline pilots are exposed to more radiation than a nuclear power plant worker.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

this article describes pretty well, how we tend to underestimate the impact of rare events: http://arxiv.org/abs/1505.04722

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

not when the thing explodes, ask the guys at tchernobyl. oh wait...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Chernobyl was caused by human error because they disregarded safeguards to do something the plant was not designed to do.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that's a misleading question. the real question: are the risks worth the benefits? probably not...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Are the risks of deadly airplane crashes not worth the risk of flying? Because those are far more common than nuclear accidents are.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they're also much less devestating and they don't have long-term consequences. nuclear accidents kill people through cancer decades later

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they're also much less devestating and they don't have long-term consequences. nuclear accidents kill people through cancer decades later

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Other nearby plants were fine because they spent more on earthquake and tsunami resistant buildings, just sayin

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Coal power plants cause more radiation than nuclear.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

not when they explode

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Small chance of melt down, vs continual radiation being literally expelled into the atmosphere as part of the design? Hmm

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

coal is awful, i agree. but that doesnt excuse the devestation nuclear meltdowns cause. its not even close and its not clean at all.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The difference is that coal plants release radiation during *normal operation*.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That strength earthquake was also a very rare event and the plant want designed to withstand it.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The plant did actually withstand the earthquake okay. But then it was hit by a tsunami, which it was not at all designed for.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well it was designed for it, there was a 6 meter sea wall; they didn't accommodate for the larger tsunami from the same size earthquake.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Onagawa NPP did prepare for it with a 14 meter sea wall. Plus Fukushima's backup generators were in the basement instead of on the roof.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Onagawa NPP did prepare for it with a 14 meter sea wall. Plus Fukushima's backup generators were in the basement instead of on the roof.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The plant withstood the earthquake. It was the tsunami that caused it to go out of control.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

All nuclear energy crises were caused by human error. Also insane amount more people have died as a result of fossil fuel pollution.

11 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Not to mention coal mining accidents and natural gas explosions, humans are terrible at rationally evaluating risk.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

we will always have humans in powerplants, you cant separate that. human risk is also powerplant risk.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As one example, most backup generators are on roofs, so they're not lost during a flood. Fuku put them in the basement because it's cheaper.

11 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 2

This is what I was getting at, thank you. I didn't like the implication of the last image. Nuclear energy is useful and important.

11 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Nuclear isn't safe when you half-ass it. I think every accident has been a half-assed reactor and/or an ancient reactor (50+ years old). 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

New reactor designs are much safer but enviros have been pushing the "nuclear isn't safe" thing for so long it's hard to build them. (2/2)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Typically modern plants are very very safe. Fukushima had faulty engineering that had been known about for 5 years, but was ignored.

11 years ago | Likes 156 Dislikes 4

And that´s the problem with nuclear energy. It might be "safe", but people will fuck it up sooner or later.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

lets be honest: all powerplants have some fault, they're never up to code...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Completely avoidable, and is what should be focused on for the blame.

11 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 1

Every issue with nuclear disaster has been proven to be at the fault of safety standards

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

nuclear powerplants commonly break safety standards. if they can't follow them, it's not safe, sry. we must measure reality, not idealism

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Which would be a valid argument against Nuclear Power if this weren't endemic across the entire Energy Industry.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

So much this.. it's actually one of the safest forms of energy, and new technology has it as 100% clean with no chance of even purpose leak

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

that's bullshit, sry. there will always be another accident, there will always be idiots cutting corners. you're just repeating lobbyists.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Google is your friend.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

no. google tells you what you want to hear. search for "chemtrails" and it will tell you the world is run by lizards.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What do they do with waste? Or do these not produce any?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They reuse the waste through the plant.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

exactly, there is tons of waste. digging uranium up causes lots of CO2. nuclear power is very far from "clean".

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Do you know how much co2 is used to build solar and wind plants?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It also took a Earthquake and Tsunami before there was any radiation leak. Think about that, it had bad engineering and was safe until 1/

11 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

3/ diesel cooling pumps got flooded and the reactor core was still cooling off after shutdown, causing the coolant to turn to steam and

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

This talks well about its robustness taking two severe disasters to cause containment failure. It's not like Chernobyl in the slightest.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

4/ release radiation along with the steam.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

2/ it was hit by a tsunami. Even then it wasn't a meltdown, the reactor was shutdown, it was Radiation from boiling coolant because the

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Yeah, and if I remember correctly both the earthquake and tsunami weren't on the small end of the scale either

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Exactly. Also this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9M__yYbsZ4 Thorium Reactors have inherent safety vs engineered safety like current tech

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, this was my understanding. Last image felt like they were trying to say "Look! Irony!" as though nuclear energy itself was to blame.

11 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

6.7 microsieverts? That's not even an order of magnitude higher than the global average for background radiation.

11 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 21

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Soooo it's safe?

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Hmm yes only not as dark and virtually untouched by looters in comparison.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

https://youtu.be/ZsuVtIuiruI people should watch Pandora's Promise on Netflix. Nuclear energy gets a bad wrap.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

+1 for knowledge

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

6.7/hr, background radiation is per year. Therefore an annual exposure of this level is around 20x higher than the global average of 3mSv/yr

11 years ago | Likes 118 Dislikes 0

20 times background is still negligible considering the allotted maximum per year is 50,000 mSv/yr.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

No clue what you said but you get em OP :)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's like getting a chest CT scan every hour.

A chest CT is a LOT higher (around 10mSv). This is closer to a dental xray every hour.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Micro, not milli. It's like a chest CT every 1000 hours (41 days)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

So only 1.3 OOM higher? Doesn't really seem like too much.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A good point but I'd point out that our understanding of low level radiation exposure is piss poor. Everyone was wrong about Chernobyl.
