Yuck. What a wasteland

I visited it once a few years ago. It smelled horrific. People were swimming and wading in it, and I thought it smelled like dead fish.

What colour was the lake before the causeway was built?
MothMonsterMan
The one on the left. The right is much fresher water... Still saltier than the oceans.
Forgive me. I meant saltier than @ops moms ballsack.
WisconsinCentral2714
Southern Pacific's Lucin Cutoff, shaved 44 miles off of a journey. from 1904 to 1950 there was a 12 mile long trestle letting water (1/2)
flow between the two halves of the lake. It was replaced with a dirt causeway in 1959. There was also a station named Mid Lake in the middle
Ulthirm
eh and we currently are having the bloom go through every lake near here. the salt lake being one of the saltiest may actually not develop
it.
Fun fact: they added bigger gaps this year to stop this from happening. If they removed it all at once then the hatcheries would be fucked
Since the South has much more salt than the North they were worried it would be too massive of a shock to the ecosystems
Bababarfani
Is that a wall keep the integrity?!?!

Wanna die? Cause that is how you die.
TheArtfulReposter
I was a sea monkey wrangler on that lake, scooped up brine shrimp egg and pumped it into one-ton bags. Pink side is so salty it crusts 1/2
Everything like the rim of a marg glass, and it looks like pink lemonade when you motor through it. Sunsets were acid trip-ish.
shahbrahdaman
The bacteria in the lake is an Archaea. Meaning that it only lives in extreme conditions. Also called an extremophite. Has a pink tinge.
The Archaea is very numerous. Thats why it colours the water. If the salinity were to drop lower than 8% the Archaea would die. It needs it.
ayydubb91
The best part is the stink, the flies, and the stink...oh and the flies.

A "factoid", by definition, is not true.
Is English a 2nd language for you? English, if personified, is that one asshole who refuses to admit you are right by changing the facts.
By it's definition factoid is an invented truth BUT IT IS also a briefly stated trivial fact... this is an aladeen word.
thorkild91
So this person was both right and wrong by definition. And in context. Wrong. Sooo I guess.... He was incorrect.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYJ2w82WifU but yeah typical internet pedantic crap.
SightlierGravy
You know, factoid has more than one definition: a briefly stated and usually trivial fact.
Don't quote Merriam-Webster at me. Oxford or nothin'.
lol okay: A brief or trivial item of news or information.
Re-reading this thread the next day, I realize I came off as an asshole, so I apologize for that. I meant my Oxford comment as a joke, but
Causeway, railpath; it's in the US, it's a train-track
eggmuffin
Damn arrogant Americans. "My way or no way!" Fuck off.
Jomini001
You understand a causeway is any pathway built on top on an embankment, yes? Whether it is built for trains specifically is irrelevant.

Bad. Boom, just described it. Idiot.

What's it smell like? Is it salty-smelling the way the ocean is?
AWFUL.The Independence Day scene when Will Smith's dragging an alien in a parachute & he yells 'What is that SMELL?!' was filmed @ the lake.
Brine shrimp corpses. So quite terrible.
Worse. Ocean has much less salt than this lake. Although, I've come to enjoy the smell of that first summer storm
AnuTheEverything
It's so drained now they should rename it the great dirt lake

It doesn't work, they insist they are just trying to spread the word of Jesus.
nor is the pants that can stand on their own. i swam in it for a school trip and the next day could stand my shirt and pants up on themselve

It's like when you scare a bunch of seagulls away by running toward them, except the seagulls are tiny bugs and they don't leave you alone.
humpBackOfNotreDame
There are bugs in the Salt Lake? I'm from VT & always imagined the area to be pristine, bug-free w/ breathtaking mountains in the backdrop.
At eh wrong time of year? Absolutely. Brine flies, biting midges, etc can get really thick.
wormfood
There is a type of may-fly thing why always called a brine fly. It really, really likes the Salt Lake. So there must be smaller critters.
henzolo
Flamingos would do well there
