One of my favorites! Beef stroganoff. So, what you gonna need:

1 pot, one pan, and a slow cooker. Probably a spoon but I'm not your mother.

Ingredients:
1 to 1.5 pounds pot roast
(Stew meat works fine but I find it's cheaper to cut up a roast myself)
2 26 oz cans of cream of mushroom soup
3 tablespoons worsestershire sauce
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp seasoning salt (or regular salt if you dont have)
1 tsp onion powder
(Or 1 whole onion. I use powder because my partner has a texture issue with onions)
1 cup beef broth
1/2 a cup of sour cream
(Optional but delicious)

Directions:

1. Grab your meat and cut it up into about 1 inch cubes trimming off the fat as you go. It doesn't need to be pot roast but any cut that is tough and needs to cook a while. I bought a 3 pound pot roast for about $10 (yay sales!) And used half of it putting the other half in the freazer for future cooking adventures
2. Heat up a pan good and hot. Make it sizzle motherfucker. Lay in your meat so it's all touching the pan! No piles. Sprinkle on 1 tablespoon worsestershire sauce to flavor that meat. Brown=good tasty bits that help things taste better. You can add your chopped onion in this step if you want to use it.
3. Once that shit is brown use the 1 cup beef broth and pour it in the pan to ensure your brown bits get in the slow cooker. Pour all that shit in the slow cooker.
3. Now we put in our 2 cans of cream of mushroom, 2 tablespoons of worsestershire, 1 tsp garlic, 1/2 tsp pepper, 1/4 tsp paprika, 1/2 tsp seasoning salt (taste your stroganoff first to see if its needed. It depends on how salty your canned soup is. If the salt seems right before you add it skip this ingredient), 1 tsp onion powder (leaving it out if you used a whole onion).
4. Let that shit cook in the slow cooker. I do 3-4 hours with my slow cooker on high. You can cook it longer on low but I'm an impatient bitch. Test if it's done by chewing up a piece of meat. If its chewy that shit ain't done. Cook it longer.
5. When you are about ready to eat (about 20 min from nom time) boil water and cook up some egg noodles. I wont explain that one. If you cant boil pasta go eat a microwave meal.
6. Before serving mix in your sour cream to finish. I dont know why. That's just how my mom did it.
7. Get a plate of noodles and pour that stroganoff right on there. Eat a couple plates because you are a hungry bastard and this shit is good. Put the leftovers in the fridge for future meals because we made a lot and that $5 of meat is gonna be a couple meals.
8. Profit.

I'll do a couple of these. I am an expert at the art of being poor. If you are put back at the thought of the price of the spices you can get them at the dollar store or sometimes Walmart has a bin of spices for $1. Look for sales and deals and you will be fine. The worsestershire sauce will be a couple bucks but a bottle will last you a long time. This is the way my mother made it growing up so if I sinned in the art of stroganoff cookery than idk go yell at her?

Peace out homies. Happy cooking!

Add rice to make it last longer ?

I love beef stroganoff. Also mashed potato pancakes. I have all my grandma's recipes for how to reuse leftovers, etc. Poverty can create.

On 2 occasions in my life I had eaten so much that I needed to throw up after. On both occasions, I ate beef stroganoff.

Stretched and spread meat work great for this recipe. It's a matter of taste

If you were good at spreading your meat, you wouldn’t need this recipe

There are better ways but it's a simple recipe for people not confident in their cooking ability. It can also be done with heavy cream

Fuck yeah spread it

If you put the sour cream in too early it will curdle.

My mom used to add instant oats to the hamburger meat. No one EVER knew. I caught her one day and she made me promise not to tell my dad.

Great for tacos, casseroles, mince & onion, meatballs, or meatloaf. Not great for spaghetti sauce or soups.

This is actually what taco bell adds to their meat product to stretch it

I just made this today and it is amazing! I substituted onion soup dip mix for the beef broth and onion bc I am broke and didn’t have broth

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is actually a rather good idea! Sure it packed some flavor and if I'm not mistaken one of the things in that stuff is beef broth

This will definitely be a family staple as I suck at cooking and this was super easy, thank you so much

I needed this. My late mother (cancer SUCKS) knew this was my favorite. I've faved loads of recipes here for fun, but this, I needed. TY, OP

It's funny how the older you get the more you want the things you had growing up

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You add sour cream at the end because if it cooks, it can curdle and break the sauce. Adding at the end keeps it creamy. Looks delicious!

7 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Also, use Worcestershire sauce. Sour cream is NOT optional either. Braise the meat if you have the time.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

With stews and pot roasts, if you toss the meat chunks in flour and then sear, the flour acts as a thickening agent.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

For that amount of ingredients, I think more than 1/4 tsp of paprika is needed, IF you want it to taste like actual stroganoff

7 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

I had stroganoff from the original recipe once in Poland. Way more black pepper than usual.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Adjust as you see fit! I might try upping that myself next time I make it

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you are measuring your paprika by the teaspoon and not the cup, you are not making actual stroganoff.
