13 reasons why octopuses are my favorite animal.

Dec 13, 2014 2:03 PM

They are very smart.

They can open jars, solve puzzles, use tools, and learn from other octopuses by watching them. Some octopuses will play with toys.

They have eight arms!

Yeah, you already knew this, but just think about it. So cool.

Their arms are covered with hundreds of suction cups.

A close up of a suction cup of a Giant Pacific Octopus

They have three hearts.

One for each gill, and one to pump blood (which is blue because it is copper based not iron based like our blood) to the rest of the body.

The male literally hands the female his sperm in order to mate.

A male octopuses penis is his third arm on the right side.

They can be big...

A Giant Pacific Octopus

or small.

A baby Star Sucker Octopus

They are great hunters

They kill their prey by injecting it with paralyzing saliva and then chew it up with their beak.

They get around by shooting water jets out of their head, or by crawling.

They can even get around on land for short periods of time.

They can squeeze into really tight spaces.

The only hard part of their body is their beak, and the rest is all squishy.

They have incredible camouflage.

Not only can they change their color, but their shape and texture as well.

As a last resort, they shoot ink in your face.

The ink, in addition to being impossible to see through, will sting the eyes, and affect the sense of smell of the predator.

They are beautiful badass motherfuckers.

This Blue Ringed Octopus has enough venom to kill 26 adult humans within minutes.

P.S. Octopi is NOT the correct plural for octopus. The ending us only converts to i if the word is derived from Latin, and the word octopus is derived from Greek. The correct plural is octopuses.

They have 6 arms and 2 legs

It is. Don't let imgur lie to you. Latin and Greek nerd here to back you up.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought it was octopussies.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually, all three forms are okay to use. The word counts as an English word and can be pluralised in an English manner, so "octopuses".

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The word comes from Greek and the way to pluralise it there is "octopodes", so that one is fine. And finally "octopi" counts as all right >

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

because it is old and common enough to be considered an accepted variant.

At one of the major cephalopod conventions a couple years back "they" declared that octopuses, octopi, octopus (like plural moose & fish)-

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

-were all correct because they were tired of arguing about it.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Octopuses, Octopi, and Octopodes are all recognisable plural forms. Octopodes is technically correct, but might also get you funny looks.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

THANK YOU.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

There are three correct pluralities of octopus: octopi, octopuses, and octopodes

11 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 11

Correct? No. In common use? Yes. And don't quote the dictionary. It merely lists words in order to aid in spelling and comprehension.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Hnnnnggg

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Octopi is only correct because it's been used for over 100 years. You can use it, but don't go around correcting anyone that says octopuses.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, only octopodes and octopuses are correct.

!!!?????!!!!11111///?????"""

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

It's accepted in English 'cause people say it often enough but like the post said it doesn't really make sense.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But neither does a number of other words and the letter w.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

same thing with j, yeah, but i'm just gonna go with it, ya know

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's "correct" because of popular usage, but not for any real, etymological reason.

11 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

That doesn't mean it's correct, that just means people are wrong.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's why I put "correct" in quotes. :P

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So its correct for the same reason that literally means figuratively?

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

don't start this shite haha

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep. Language changes frequently because of popular usage

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I thought Octopi was incorrect because it's mixing greek and lation or something... It's one of those "Read it years ago" things.

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

the english language is largely defined by the vernacular of the people, because octopi is commonly accepted it is correct.

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

While I do agree with you, there is still a domain of "proper" usage depending on origin.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But because it was Latinized, the latin plural is still correct. It went through Latin before coming into English.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think it wasn't a word but then everyone kept saying it anyway so it just became a word.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Just like homosexuality and polyamory.

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

And Television

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow way to fuck up spelling "Latin", me. Is Lation how romans moisturized?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Nah its a colloquial for someone from laos.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It would be because of Octo- root, but there *IS* no plural in the Greek. The plural is a Westernism, so any of the 3 is appropriate.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it's hexadecapodes when there's two, tetracontapodes when there's 5

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Geundheit.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Octopi?

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Read the last bit of info in the OP's post, he clarifies why it isn't octopi. It's only "i" at the end of a "-us" word if it's Latin.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 Octopus is derived from Greek.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

don't be pedantic

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Fowler's Modern English Usage say the acceptable plural in English is "octopuses". "Octopi" is misconceived, and "octopodes" pedantic.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I... always thought it was octopi...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you're speaking english, the most correct is "Octopuses" just like, technically, the most correct term is "cactuses."
