It's annoying because now I have to catch a bus.

It's pouring rain and I've actually remembered to bring an umbrella, I get on the bus, with a lady and her son, he's adorable

We talk for a little while more and the conversation starts to get deeper.

I explain why I have to catch the bus and then she tells me usually her husband picks her up but he cant right now because he got beaten by a group of men and he's in a wheel chair for a while.

I immediately start to empathize with his woman, my dads in a wheel chair, it's really tough.

We're nearing the end of our journey and I get out my umbrella wish her luck and tell her I hope she doesn't get too wet.

Her son then asks me what I'm holding and I explain that it's to block the rain, so I don't get wet.

He turns to his mum and says "Mummy why dont we have one of those?" pointing at my umbrella.

His mum looks embarrassed as she tries to quietly explain that they don't have enough money for one right now.

We get off at the same stop, I only have to walk 1km home, I assume they have to walk further, I give her my umbrella, initially she refused but I insisted, she eventually accepted it.

She seemed so thankful, knowing she could keep her son dry.

Then I walk home, get soaking wet, I'm not mad, because even though it's something so small.

I feel like I've made a difference in someones life.

If you've read this far, thank you, here's a picture of my kitten.

For the people who downvoted this, I hope all your umbrellas get holes poked into them.

that's cool, but it's a lot more satisfying if you do it without telling anyone, and especially without telling tens of thousands of people.

You are pathetic craving for upvotes like this...

13 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 5

Why do I always get a pic of a kitten at the end?  I'd rather see a doggy.  Or a hot girl in a wet T-shirt, which is related because rain.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I call BS. Ive gotten so many free umbrellas in my life I cant believe someone is too poor to buy a dollar store umbrella. Nice Pics though.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why don't you have car insurance with car rental?

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I seriously doubt a story where an umbrella is a luxury item for someone who can afford a bus.

I never had one until a teacher bought me one in high school. Money went for drugs and alcohol at my house.

......I don't as I've lived it...

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I have "disposable income" and have never even considered buying an umbrella. Except maybe one of those big ones for the beach.

13 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

There's a difference between considering buying one and "my kid doesn't know what an umbrella is because we're too poor"

13 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I agree.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I budget for weekly bus fares to get to uni and get my daughter to school, an umbrella is very much a luxury item for us. Circumstances yo.

13 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 3

I should mention we don't really need one either, our bus stops are conveniently located and we don't end up walking uncovered for long.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Steal one. Nobody gives a shit about a stolen umbrella.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Is anyone else annoyed of these story posts with semi-relevant gifs? My jimmies are rustling every time, I can't even read the post.

13 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 5

I could not agree more. Shitty only vaguely relevant gifs and a cat picture and a made up fake sob story = instant karma whore, so annoying

13 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

The stories aren't the annoying part, in my opinion. The annoying part is the picture of a cat/dog at the end. Completely unnecessary.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I don't mind reading good stories (which this wasn't). The gifs are the worst part. And the pet is just point whoring.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Honestly I feel the same way. And there's always that damn picture of the Doctor crying in the rain. I knew I couldn't be the only one!

I don't get the downvotes- I think this is really sweet. Way to turn a bad situation around, OP! :)

How the hell do you not have enough for an umbrella? They're less than $5

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Judging by previous comments... because some people feel it's wrong to brag about your good deeds.

13 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Personally, I love reading about good deeds. It makes me all warm and fuzzy :)

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I can understand that, but it really didn't seem like a "Hey, look what I did!" post to me so much as a "Huh... our mutually shitty 1/2

Thank you for the offer, I like your methods of deduction.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

;)

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

they are too poor to have an umbrella or know what one is but normally the husband drives a car to pick her up. This absolutely happend!

13 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 6

Haha good point. The gas involved probably costs more than an umbrella.

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Actually, in places like Houston you NEED a car to go anyway. Umbrellas are luxury items.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

So true. Our public transportation system really sucks unless you're downtown or in the medical center.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The rest is fine, but a kid not knowing what an umbrella is made me question it.

13 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

.....Her husband was beaten and put in a wheelchair. Imagine the medical expenses.

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

therefore, they should have had umbrellas before her husband was beaten up.. this story is bs 100%.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Meh, I could really care less if it was true or not. This is the internet. No need to get my panties in a bunch. :)

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yes....but before this happend (presumably recently) the kid has never seen an umbrella before. Hokie dokie then...

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You have obviously never been around a child. They ask ridiculous amounts of questions even if they know the answer.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yes. Exactly. I've never been around a child. That's exactly it. Good catch!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I knew it! /sarcasm. Seriously, kids ask loads of questions for no reason, it's what they do. Not saying that this makes this real.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What we have here is a case of someone wanting to fit in with the "I call bullshit" crowd. He doesn't understand circumstances.

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Or someone who has their own opinion and not mindlessly assumes a whiny sob story on the internet is true right away Skepticism for the win!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No, instead you mindlessly assume a whiny sob story on the internet is false right away.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I sure did champ! I sure did!

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Ehhh umbrellas are really inexpensive, also seems like BS the kid wouldn't know what one was.

Im not a fan of the "you cant be upset because someone has it worse" idea. It also means you can't be happy become someone has it better.

13 years ago | Likes 311 Dislikes 19

I feel this is more about getting a different perspective on things and being a nice person no matter what happens to you.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I just refuse to be sad reject the notion of not being happy. Well, most of the time. The rest, I just curl up in a ball and cry. Works out.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's a lot of things I don't complain about, because from my perspective they're so aggressively petty compared to what others are facing

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup. Only one happy person in the world and only one sad person. One angry person, one scared person, etc...

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

absolutely, well said.

i think the moral is don't dwell on the negative. acknowledge it, then recognize that it could be worse, then move on.

13 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

No one seems to get this concept. Let people be sad about the bad things in their life. We shouldn't be ashamed of being sad.

13 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Except this quote is about self pity, not grief.

13 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I agree, but in this case I think it wasn't a pity contest, but more of an experience of perspective. We all need that once in a while.

13 years ago | Likes 154 Dislikes 0

Amen--besides, the perspective was used for love, not scorn or self-pardon.

13 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

i think the moral is that sometimes seeing someone who has it worse can make you appreciate what you do have
