In the UK the Conservatives proposed creating the NHS, legalised gay marriage, support climate change measures and built a huge amount of solar and wind power and so on. A lot of engineers have high IQ and applied skills, but lower social/emotional intelligence or overall knowledge of society and culture, necessary to understand society, economics, and even ethics. I can bet you countries such as Denmark or Sweden where education is more rounded have a lower right-wing percentage.

This by itself isn't good evidence being educated makes you liberal. We could have looked at a similar graph and with the same logic argued (wrongly) being white makes you better at academics. I have friends who are academics and the hiring is quite political, it would be silly to deny some departments are reluctant to hire open conservatives these days. Education does tend to make you more liberal though, this just isn't good evidence on its own.

There are literally studies that indicate the more education a person has, the more liberal their stance on societal issues. This information has been available for decades. Ultimately, a lot of conservative stances are based around wanting to maintain a status quo that is beneficial to an elite few. In order to support this, you have to either be the elite few OR be convinced that an outside source keeps you from being the elite few. This is ultimately a non-logical position, there are countless other factors that any amount of higher education clears up because you've inherently learned how to research and read statistics.

Not shitting on engineering, I am an engineer and have met some great people in my field. But I have noticed a trend with some people in my industry (obviously this is speculation based off my anecdotal evidence so definitely take it with a grain of salt)

Lots of engineers on the older side didn't get the title with education, but with working on the same thing for decades. My dad worked with several engineers who only had a high school diploma but worked on helicopters for 30 years and so got that engineer title for the pension bump when they finally retire(d). That option has been destroyed, though, so don't worry, we won't be letting experience get in the way of permanent debt anymore.

Their data starts with the USN&WR top 40 Liberal Arts colleges, which excludes all state universities, Yale, Harvard, MIT, etc. Example colleges: Vassar, Sarah Lawrence, Bryn Mawr…all very lefty, and mostly cater to humanities. The Vassar Bio dept. is probably more lefty than, say, U of Tx. Also not shown in the graph: 37.8% of faculty at the colleges studied who were not registered under any political party.

But I refuse to believe that 99.99% are dems, when we have so many explicitly christian colleges and universities. I've done lots of statistics in social sciences and you never see "99.99% of [x group] is [y]. It just never happens like that.
