Kink of the Day: Terminology

Nov 8, 2015 2:36 PM

Terminology

Here is a list of some common BDSM terms that you may run across in my posts or the posts of other kink oriented users;

24/7: A BDSM relationship in which the roles are maintained in daily life. I am my Dom's Brat all the time and she disciplines me (discreetly) in public.

Aftercare: A period of time after intense BDSM activity in which both Dom and sub recover. Typically a Dom will ensure a sub is taken care of first. I am usually unable to move after intense play, I rely on my Dom entirely.

Age Play: A form of role play in which a submissive partner takes on the behavior of an age other than their own, this includes infantilism, littles, and some Brats. In my own relationship, I tend to behave like a disobedient teenager and my Dom punishes me for bad behavior.

BDSM: Bondage/Discipline, Dominance/Submission, and Sadism/Masochism. BDSM is a general umbrella term we use for most kinky activities as most anything I can think of falls under one of these.

Bondage: The physical restraint of a partner. The most common kink in the world.

Bottom: The receptive partner, the one having things done to her or him.

Brat: A submissive who doesn't obey, talks back, misbehaves and otherwise gives their Dominant a difficult time. Some Doms love the challenge, others prefer to steer clear. I'm a Brat, its my primary sexual identity. I don't obey easily and need to consistently punished.

Collared: A submissive or slave who is owned in a long term relationship with a Dominant or Master.

Consent: Mutual agreement to an intimate action or the continuation of an intimate action. Consent can be retracted at any time.

Consensual Non-consent: Also called rape play, this is roleplay of forced sexual activity. This is a common fetish among submissive women.

Contract: Sometimes also called an agreement, this will be a formal or informal agreement on the structure, guidelines, rules and boundaries in a relationship. Very common among long term partners in D/s relationships.

D/s: Short hand for Dominant and submissive. Example: They are a D/s couple.

DDLG: Daddy Dom Little Girl. Referring to an age play relationship between a Dominant "Daddy" and a submissive little girl. Some vanilla folks feel uncomfortable with this one.

Demonstration: A performance of a BDSM activity for the purposes of education. Typically a sub will be on display for the duration of the demonstration and a Dom will explain technique and any other important information.

Dom or Domme: Dom refers to a male or masculine Dominant, Domme refers to a female or feminine Dominant. My Dom prefers to be called Dom instead of Domme, so there are some variances.

Dominant: The person in control of the submissive, taking on the responsibilities of leading during play and sometimes taking a household leadership role. Dominants are usually male (70%), but each person determines their own role.

Dom Drop: Not frequently talked about, even among BDSM folks, is Dom Drop. Dom Drop occurs at the end of a scene, it is both emotional and physical. May of the acts a Dom performs require intense physical strain and focus. Doms need aftercare too.

Discipline: Structured punishment of a submissive who breaks a rule. Typically humiliation or impact play is utilized as discipline.

Dungeon: A room or area with BDSM equipment and a play space.

Edgeplay: Edgeplay is any form of play that poses a health risk. Breath play, fireplay, knife play, heavy impact play, and bloodplay are all forms of Edgeplay.

Hard Limit: Something you absolutely will not do, non-negotiable. Mine are: scat, watersports, or anything that leaves permanent marks.

Little: A little, short for little girl (or boy), is a submissive who behaves and sometimes dresses in a manner of a child. The exchange of power with their Daddy or Mommy is typically framed within this context as well. While I am not a Little, I adore them, they have a lot of fun in ways that I don't. I even get a somewhat protective of my "little sisters".

Maintenance Spanking: Spankings given routinely, to ensure good behavior on the part of the submissive or for the dominant to relieve frustration.

Masochism: Enjoyment from receiving pain. A masochist is a person who enjoys pain.

Master/slave: An extreme form of Dominance and submission. A slave surrenders control to a Master for their mutual benefit.

Munch: A gathering for kinky people in "Vanilla" space. Typically at a restaurant. This is a good opportunity to meet people with your clothes on.

OTK: Over the knee, short for over the knee spankings, a common position for punishment or other corrective discipline.

Pegging: A woman using a strapon to penetrate a partner's anus.

Play: Kinky activity. Examples: I enjoy impact play. My Dom gave permission for a Top to play with me.

Play Party: A BDSM oriented event with multiple people engaging in activity. It is typically acceptable to watch.

Professional Dom or Dominatrix: Some men and women make money from performing dominant acts. They do not have sex with their clients.

Protocols: The rules. For those of us that are 24/7, these are always in effect. Respectful terms to Dominants is common, "Yes Sir".

Sadism: Sadism is sexual pleasure from causing pain. A sadist is one who gains pleasure from causing pain. Sadists are the other side to my own masochism, but they receive a much more negative reaction from outsiders. Sadists are not interested in violating consent.

SSC, SSSC, RACK: Safe, Sane, Consensual; Safe, Sane, Sober and Consensual; Risk Aware Consensual Kink. These phrases are very common. No one wants to walk away from a Scene with someone upset or feeling that their consent was violated.

Safeword: A pre-chosen word that indicates all play should stop. Example: Sunstone.

Scene: A session of play, from start to finish. If a scene is occurring at a play party, do not interrupt. If you believe there is a problem, alert the party host.

Soft Limits: Things someone don't like or is nervous to do but may be willing to do if negotiated ahead of time. Just because I don't like something doesn't mean I won't do it. For me, needles (I will faint), Breathplay and anything that could leave a scar are soft limits.

Stop Light: Instead of a safeword, some BDSM practitioners like myself use the BDSM Stop Light. Red means stop, yellow means slow down and green means that we are good to go.

Sub Drop: Sub drop happens when coming out of subspace. A sub may have her body temperature drop, may be unable to communicate and may be unable to move. It is a very emotionally vulnerable time and aftercare is critical.

Sub Space: A state of mental elation that subs enter during play, it may result in being disoriented to the point of being unaware of her or his surroundings. Many subs, such as myself, are no longer able to communicate while in subspace.

Submissive: Also called Sub, is a partner who submits physically, sometimes mentally and emotionally as well, to a dominant.

Switch: Someone who enjoys being both a Top and a Bottom.

Top: The person performing the acts on a Bottom.

Vanilla: Someone who is completely unfamiliar with BDSM or chooses not to engage in any form of BDSM. Mainstream culture.

Warm up: Gentle play at the start of a scene to get a submissive (and the Dominant) ready for more intense play.

Terms

There are many terms that I have left out (seriously, the original of this was 46 pages in word). But I hope this can give you an idea of some of the basics. I inevitably left something important out, so feel free to ask about any term you have heard in the comment and I will do my best to define it (in 140 characters...)

TL;DR: There is no TLDR. These are BDSM terms, read them if you want.

As always, feel free to AMA. Send me a message or contact me on Fetlife under AlexiRose.

Not into over half of this stuff but do whatever makes you happy I guess.

Finally, a BDSM post that that is actually accurate.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I never knew there was so many different varriations. Count me in.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Man this is long but nice job op I think

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah... sorry.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I seriously could never go back to being vanilla.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I could do it for my Dom, but I would be miserable and likely be a nasty bitch to everyone I know. Submission is my mood stabilizer.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Amen. ^_^

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for this list. I remember seeing a comic that included aftercare, and that really turned around my thinking on this fetish.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I was happy to see that comic. I've always seen bdsm types as big softies/thrillseekers and thought it was silly people were afraid of them.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love that comic! So cute. Aftercare is really important and is a key bonding time for Dom and sub.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Nothing turns me on more than some hot terminology, baby.

11 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

Sorry, sexier things will go up another time.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Let me tell you about law school!

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

what's breathplay?

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Breath Play is blocking or restricting breathing for sexual pleasure. Choking and using plastic to simulate suffocating are examples.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Like choking, trying to cut out air intermittently. Letting the submissive know you're controlling their breathing.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes, and it can be very intimate and incredibly frightening. My Dom will sometimes cover my nose and mouth to punish me for talking too much

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Whereas I LOVE breath play. Corsets restricting my breath and choking is usually all we do tho...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you for including DD/lg. So many vanillas consider it beyond taboo that I didn't expect to see it listed. Made my little side happy.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I <3 my littles! I'm always up for baking cookies for and coloring with my little friends. I call them my little sisters.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I definitely need some little friends. I'm fairly new to the dynamic, and am honestly too shy to have made any friends.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The term dungeon master gets a new meaning.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a D&D player, it absolutely does. Sometimes I giggle when the term is said, in both contexts.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Yeah, this is Tom. He is my Dungeon Master" Then just casually continuing the conversation without realizing what they probably thought.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It can be real funny when just casually mentioning it to friends who don't know anything about D&D, and forgetting the dual context.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My experience is that many nerdy people are also kinky people. I'd say, 90% of the women I've met in gaming were into BDSM at some level.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wonder if there is any correlation.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A question: When your dom disciplines you in public, what is her technique?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It really depends on the company. At the mall, she'll give me a quick swat and tell me to behave. Sometimes she'll slap my face.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So, you can't exploit public spaces to act defiant or rebellious?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I really really do. I know there are limits to what my Dom can do publicly and I use that to my full advantage. I pay for it eventually.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Neat. Thanks for sharing, OP.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't need terms. I just need IT..

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...have you tried turning it off and turning it on again?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes I'm IT, how may I assist you in resolving the technical issue you are experiencing?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sunstone as a safeword, eeh? Sounds like somebody shares my taste in kinky commiiiiics! Great post.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh! I love those two! So much fun. Not at all like my own relationship, but I love it still.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're so cute. &the author does so well at conveying SSC to the audience. doesn't focus on the sex, I love that it focuses on the people

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*Sigh, Good old rope.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Everyone loves some rope, what's your favorite kind?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hemp rope is my favorite, I'm also partial to nylon for the way it feels.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Have you tried Bamboo rope? It's a new item to our play bag, I'm fond of it.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've heard if it never tried it.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*Discreetly clicks on the favorite button*

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I love attack on titan!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I...uhh...haven't seen it.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good write up. I'm always surprised by how many other kinky people there are on Imgur.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As a kinky person I'm always surprised by how may people have 'kinky' fetishes, but outright refuse to act them out or embrace them.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Being in the hosting world: the amount of kinkster techies is fucking staggering. It's nuts.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My owner messaged me on gtalk (called me 'dog') during my in-person tech interview. Interviewer said 'Gonna bark back?'. Still work there.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, check out my fetlife if you like. Also there is a group for kink Imgurians.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Be my fetlife friend?! Please please please... I need more kink friends.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah! Send me a request.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks. Didn't know about the Imgurian group.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Here's a link: https://fetlife.com/groups/66932

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep, has some folks much more internet famous than me, like IPeg.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow, i've never heard of that model of IPod.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

IPegonthefirstdate, she's a user on Imgur that I mildly adore.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Even though most of this was already familiar to me, I thank you for putting this together. I cherish my Sub time.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Last time I had sex was in Skyrim with an npc.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Okay... Sex is really fantastic IMHO. I've be pretty miserable if I didn't have sex for more than a week.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

However, I've never really had amazing sex. So I don't know what I'm missing. It's like a dog that never gets to eats human food.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Witcher 3.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Ouch" is not a safeword

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ouch is not a safeword. Typically you want something you wouldn't usually say.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Should have included DM

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, DM was on the original, but I think that if you are invited to a play party, you will have that explained to you.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

These terms are great because a properly formed relationship means you negotiate EVERYTHING. Some surprises are not good.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Always negotiate ahead of time, you can be spontaneous within the agreed upon terms.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy Textwall Batman... Sorry about that guys, it didn't look as long when I was writing it.

11 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 5

See, length can be a surprise even to the person putting it out there.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

TIL I'm the most vanilla person on earth :D

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm really interested to hear more about subspace and subdrop

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

there should be a scifi BDSM romance novel where it's hard to tell which definition is being used.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...scifi BDSM romance novels should just generally be a thing, not just a single thing. O_O; Very want.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just like puns.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you for an informitive and positive representation of the community op.

11 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

That's why I'm here, to promote the Kink community I love with the Imgur community I've become addicted to :-P

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Whenever I read bdsm stuff on imgur - I always think of the safe word 'Armageddon' http://www.darwinawards.com/legends/legends1998-10.html

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

what the fuu-WAHAHAHHAHAHA oh no, ragout...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My safeword is Slagathor

11 years ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 0

"wheatley". My Mistress was playing portal 2 when the subject first came up...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why not Teacup?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I prefer Sunstone. BDSM is art in a deviant way.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I see what you did there.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you. It's not that obvious so I was worried it would go unnoticed.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We ho by the traffic colours. I'd say I'm a soft sub to my hubs :)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mine is spamony

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dave, Debbie, @slagath0r

11 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Always glad to be of service, remember to stay safe kids :p

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It bothers me that you had to add consent to this list. Consent should be universally known not part of a terminology.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

generally consent is just for vanilla sex as most think of it...for BDSM theyre consenting or not consenting to a lot of other things too.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well no consent is and should be for everything be it sex or BDSM activities. Without consent it becomes abuse.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i have 140 characters, throw me a bone lol.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Consent is talked about a lot in BDSM culture, New Doms and Subs will get it explained until they can recite it in my community.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

What I meant is that consent has to be defined at all. I'm worried that we even have to explain consent to adults.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think consent is widely know in the BDSM community, but there are WAY too many people out there who don't fully grasp the concept.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And that's what bothers me. Consent shouldnt be something people don't fully grasp.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People who call consensual sex "rape" and nonconsensual sex "cool"...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of many reasons to hate people.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The more we talk about consent, the better in my opinion

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

And that was my problem. That consent has to be talked about and defined. consent is basic right everyone should already know they have.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We'll get there in time but right now, not enough ppl know. Ontario just started teaching consent in elementary schools so that'll help

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm curious if you looked this stuff up when you realized you were interested in it or did you just learn along the way?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A boyfriend I had when I was younger spanked me and it kind of blossomed from there, by the time I was 18, I was eager to join a munch.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For me: In my early-mid teens, I stumbled across pictures of ladies in bondage on the internet; thought that was super attractive. Looked...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...into it more and more and decided that was my kind of stuff. Overtime I learned that it's not just seeing tied up ladies that was so...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...great about it, but that I wanted to tied up. Which lead me to figure out that I'm all about being submissive. My interest in "kinky"...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...has just grown and adapted to where I am now; a 21 year old, male, submissive, with lots of interest in fetishes.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can't speak for OP, but I'm a 'there was always something different about me' kinkster. There are a lot of kinds. I always knew.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Annoyingly, there is no support. Youth was rough. Lots of 'I'm an alien' 'I'm broken' 'what's wrong with me?'. Glad that's over.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The idea of 'sub space' kind of terrifies me... and I'm naturally submissive.

11 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

All I know about subspace is from Star Trek, but eventually I'll boldly go.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh... Subspace is amazing. It's a runner's high taken to the extreme! Never going to subspace is kinda like never having an orgasm to me.

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Well... okay... interesting food for thought...

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If you're sensitive to it (like my wife), subspace is a euphoric high that is paralyzing with an afterglow that goes for days.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

After a few days, she goes into subdrop and needs extra special love and attention, but I've gotten really good at keeping her out of it.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Subspace sounds like dissociation from way it's described. I'm sure not how it's intended though, yeah?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’ve been desperately trying to achieve sub space for years.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Subspace makes my anxiety so so much easier. Everything falls away, I can focus, I am relaxed, I don't need anything but the person I'm with

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

--It's the best feeling in the world. But subdrop is so fucking horrible, and that's the risk with being a sub.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"Nothing ventured, nothing pained." ;)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

oh yeah, subspace is more than worth it. Besides, a good dom can keep me from dropping

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I learned things. Things I'll never use, but things. More and more I learn abou that life, the less I understand why people do it.

11 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 3

as long as you accept that they like it, i think that's all OP wants. if it doesn't affect anyone but them, no need to ban it or ostracize.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I accept that they like it. But my personal need for understanding drives me to always question. I question everything.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you tried breaking the bonds in your mind preventing you from being bound in the bedroom? Start slow.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Just not even remotely interested.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That would require someone in my bedroom. That's not a thing that happens.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because we love it, and humans are complex creatures, each with our own desires. Everyone wants to be happy and content.

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 5

I see that. But it boggles my mind so very hard. Pain to pleasure, slave play, half of these concepts I can't wrap my brain around at all.

11 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Yeah D/s I get. But Slave play, waterworks? Ewwwww

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Not being in service to someone is as taxing for me as not eating, and way, way more taxing than loneliness. I need service more than love.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am, thank heavens, in a 24/7 situation that works awesome for me and my owner.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

See, that's a part I can't understand. The need for someone else to help validate you? Is it really that rewarding?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't call it validation; I'm happy with what I am all the time. It's hard with no owner, but you can be valid with no girlfriend, yes?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can, yes. And I guess that is a fair point.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1. Scars are soft limit but permanent marks are hard limit. Same thing, no? 2. Is watersports piss?

11 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Water sports are piss. "Could leave a scar" is like knife play, permanent marks are things like branding, deep cuts or tattooing.

11 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Everytime I read watersports, I think about waterpolo or diving and it gives me a giggle. "My hard limit is waterpolo. Shit's exhausting."

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah right, okay. And yeah, fuck piss.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Unless you freeze it I don't think there's enough friction in it to make it worth the while - but whatever floats your boat

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't do pee or poop. I'm also terrified of needles! But I have submitted to needle play under special circumstances.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

What special circumstances?

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Um, this weekend actually... It was part of a birthday present to me. My Dom was very very rough.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1
