It always bothered me the huge discrepancy between the book ages and the movie ages. They were just to old to go on an adventure. Take to mind i watched the movie first as a kid. Now that im older though if I had an uncle that sent me on a journey with a cursed artifact I wouldnt even bat an eye. Id take my 32m ass straight to Mordor with no more fucks to give.

Unopposed? Sauron wasn't openly active but definitely still around. He 'fled' Mirkwood and returned to Mordor during Bilbo's journey. Minas Tirith has been regularly clashing with his power for a long time- Minas Morgul became evil and was renamed long before that.
