It's the embouchure, a little bit of controlled looseness can get a very breathy sound. Did it for a jazz ballad once.

I have a normal trumpet that sounds just as airy as this, so I'm pretty confused by this comment thread. Got a cornet that sounds the same.

Maybe I can help clarify. I busted out my trumpet and was able to switch from an airy old-school jazz sound, and back to that proud brassy
