We only have 400 million guns in the US, which is only 1.2 guns for every woman, man, and child. Clearly we need more guns, and with the NRA's support in Congress, we're gonna do it.

I always hated that term, it should just be boiled down to semi automatic rifle with detachable magazine. Limiting the definition of "assault weapon" to things with pistol grips, collapsible stocks, etc. is stupid. It's not like an M-14 is going to be any less effective than an AR-15. I used to be a 2A supporter but at this point I'd be completely down for only allowing fixed magazines for semi automatic rifles, we've clearly shown that we can't be trusted with them.

Check out 3 gun, 2 gun, IDPA, IPSC... etc... Olympic shooting is such a strange shooting competition to me. It is one very specific aspect of shooting under a very specific condition, which, to be fair, actually is analogous to many Olympic sports. Just imagine if they were using both hands... If the Olympics had events more in line with more typical shooting sports in the US, it may be a very different story.

I would disagree only with "strange." The really strange one is biathlon; shooting is almost an afterthought. It's a cross-country skiing race where the penalty for missing the targets is you have to ski farther. But not so much farther that it matters. The medals are decided almost entirely on skiing speed. But otherwise Olympic shooting is all about precision muscle control. You're not compensating for wind, not reaching for distance. You're just perfecting technique. Which is Olympic.

Which is why I used the qualifier *to me*, and stated that it was precisely analogues to other Olympic sports that focus on a very narrow scope (like most track and field events?).

They could use both hands if they wanted, but those guns are made for precision rather than power so they've got practically zero recoil. At that point there's nothing to gain in the extra strength from using an extra hand, and that hand just ends up being another possible point of failure for the shot so it's better to remove it from the equation.

Biggest problem for the US, is the type of shooting in the Olympics is different from most shooting contests in the US.
