Rubbish, with near 1m kilometres driving experience, autopilot (which is assist with adaptive cruise control and auto steer for lane keeping) is much less tiring and much safer than manual driving. The exact speed for duration is impossible with the foot. Once lane keep and speed is automated (with manual checks and plan b ready with hand on steering wheel at all times) attention can observe more things like traffic behaviour, erratic car drivers and preparation for driving actions.

I always find it baffling when Telsa autopilot is in the same category as Waymo. From what I understand Waymo has full responsibility for their cars, drive themselves safely, and can get remote assistance when needed. Telsa drives itself and switches to the driver just before impact, saying it's the drivers fault. I hope that Tesla has improved enough to make their robotaxi safe because Elon has overhyped things way too often.

This actually strengthens Tesla's case for FSD, since this accident in 2019 had the idiot drunk driver pushing the accel down while reaching for a phone on the floor IIRC.
FSD eliminates the #1 safety problem, idiot drivers. Someday.

$200M of the damages was punitive:
Jurors in Miami federal court awarded the estate of Naibel Benavides Leon, as well as her former boyfriend Dillon Angulo, $129 million in compensatory damages plus $200 million in punitive damages, according to a verdict sheet. Tesla was held liable for 33% of the compensatory damages, or $42.6 million. Jurors found the driver George McGee liable for 67%, but he was not a defendant and will not have to pay his share.

Ironically, I liked an earlier version before it started trying to do the whole drive. I knew what It could do and couldn't and would use it as such. Now I have no clue, I don't use it anymore, can't trust it because it feels... random... when it will fail.

I have driven a couple of rentals for the last two weeks because some plastic connectors wore out on my car... and I broke off the radiator neck nipple.
They have lane assist and other nanny features, which don't work consistently, and sometimes steer me into concrete barriers, semis, etc.

Like all those idiots whose goal is to get from point A to B in the shortest time possible. Long forgot that driving a car used to be a passion and an opportunity to enjoy views, discover places.

Driving is a terrible example to put alongside “painting” or “poetry” since you can do those activities while traveling….if someone else is driving the car or train. This is obvious.
Although driving CAN be an engaging self-rewarding expression/behavior (myself i love the game Forza Horizon), it isn’t only that and doesn’t have to be that. It can just be empty sitting time commuting if a person wants to do something else like read.

The last time driving was a passion, people spent Saturday nights cruising down the boulevard as a fun date night activity. I love a good drive in the countryside as much as anyone else, but I live in a city, most of my driving is spent watching for kids, pets, or idiots who are going to cause my insurance rates to go up due to their actions, and avoiding them. Which means no time to enjoy views or discover places. I would love if I could just get driven from point A to B without that stress.

Most my driving is to get to and from work. It's an obligation, that is all. I don't want to waste what little free time I have commuting to and from work. If an AI can handle the driving for me so I can read a book or something, then that would be great.

Point is these machines are supposed to be better than the obvious mistakes (which a machine should be easily be able to spot) humans make. If it doesnt, its trash, badly made, bugged, deployed/marketed wrong, whatever, there is no sanewashing it

Oh I was wrong, that was the verdict against the person. The corporation was only found 1/3 liable. I didn't realize hundreds of millions was a normal verdict.
