My first attempt at making lumpia. Made a resolution this year to dive deeper into my Filipino heritage and what better way to start than with food.
Edit: Wow, hi fp! So, simple recipe time!!
Lumpia is all in the wraps. Go to an Asian market and find (in the cold section) a box that literally says Lumpia product of the Philippines on it. Next for the filling.
1lbs of beef (you can do 2/3lbs beef and 1/3lbs pork if you like)
5 BABY carrots (must be baby carrots for some reason, that's what I was told) diced small
2 GREEN onions (regular onions don't cut it) diced small
1/2 a green bell pepper diced small
Salt, pepper, garlic powder
The filling can have other things you want if you like but this is common ingredients my dad's family uses for theirs.
Then fry in oil until golden. Length of time can very with how thick the wrap is but try to keep the wraps rather small. When you see the Lumpia wraps themselves you'll understand why.
And that's all it takes! Now go out there and eat like a true Filipino!

No balut!
UpVoteDragons
Yes and now you have to make chocolate stew with lichon.

Fucking best things ever. Ate them as a kid in Guam.

This is the first time I've ever heard of lumpia. What is it and how do you make it?
Lahoura
Edit for the recipe :3

Mmmm. Now I want pork adobo too.
rainbowcoloredpoop
Those look good enough that I'm surprised you had time to take a picture before they were all gone. Now I have a hankering for lumpia.
steelinmyhead

Lahoura
Omg yes, I'm also rather talented at making breakfast foods and cookies
howuuuuudoin
Aren’t they spring rolls?
enyalius4692
Baby carrots are just ugly normal carrots that have been cut down.
CabanaBoy3
I love lumpia!
haveueverwentfast
They're fucking delicious!
probshouldntsayitbut
And OP is right, impossible not to eat too many!
ZoeyDate
I concur! We have them every thanksgiving.
MoxxRavenmane
Why does it need to be Baby Carrots? They're just normal carrots cut into that shape :S
Lahoura
No idea, that's just what my mom told me and she learned the recipe from my dad.
MoxxRavenmane
I never knew they were just large carrots cut down until last year. It's not really common knowledge I guess lol
moop2000
Went to a Filipino party full of nurses. Ate so many it hurt! Worth it!
Supermanisbetter
You ate nurses? Alive or dead and did any of the live ones complain?
moop2000
Nah, no complaints! Filipinos are all about treating their guests right, and wouldn't complain :)
Supermanisbetter
Nice. ????
Fyrebaugh
Unless you are very careful baby carrots are just normal carrots cut down to shape..
Orion1030
Usually they are smaller and mis-shapen carrots, which usually leads to a slightly sweeter flavor. This is due to me making this up.
Theprincessbride
I loled
ShayneOx
My Thai wife also makes them. I cook them up while BBQing outside...and am full of them before BBQ is done cooking, Doing it again Friday :)
NrmlView
I will give you 50 dollars to make those in my home.
Lahoura
Buy me the ingredients and I'll make them for the fun of it
TheRicM
It's not that hard, you can usually buy some frozen and then just deep fry them
eagleandy93
have you ever had Dangits?
ResinSnake
The best! Looks great!
PUNKem733
Yes, I will!
ombremullet
Best dip for it is half soy sauce, half vinegar (to taste) and a bunch of minced garlic
Supermurse
Had a Philipino chief in the Navy. His wife made pancit and lumpia for those of us on duty Christmas. It was amazing.
DurfBurfle
Same! :) First time I had them!
GrampaJack
Pancit. You bastard. I haven't salivated like that in ages!

p3culiar15
Oh man. I miss my old base. The superintendent's wife would make chicken adobo and rice in a huge rice cooker to all the potluck. 1/2
p3culiar15
2/2 there's a white lady whom married to Philippino, would also make boat loads of lumpia. Now I could have myself all kinds of food in CA
Imightbethedroidyourelookingfor
Navy brat here. My childhood involved a lot of lumpia and pancit as well! Filipino moms always make enough for an army. :)
WreckGar
And you can't say no because its rude. Then you go to your other friends house and have to eat there as well. Same at the next guys house.
WreckGar
And then your mom gets pissed because you hardly touch the baked chicken breast, mixed veggies and box mashed potatoes she made.
thesameoldfears
You appreciate your moms boxed mashed potatoes
WreckGar
I do. More accurate I like fake mashed potatoes and appreciate that my parents worked full time to give me advantages in life.
ssagnitaeevoli
Putang ina mo those look good!! With shrimp? Where's the sweet sour?
Lahoura
I messed it up and ask my mom again how to make it (this is all family recipe stuff). It will be made right next time

"spring roll"
wtfIm
Egg roll. I don’t know why they’re confused for each other
bigbrother
egg rolls use thicker wrap material and typically have meat. spring rolls use thin wraps, are smaller, and are usually vegetarian.
wtfIm
Spring roll I thinkof the Vietnamese rice wrap. Egg roll is the the ones we see here with egg based wrap and deep fried.Technically ur right
PsycheClone
Ex GFs family did a roast pig, goddamn that was good pig, and I don't like pig very often..
d0uble0h
Lechon is the food of gods. When it's done well (juicy, tender meat with crunchy, crackly skin) it's hard to find anything better.
Lahoura
Tbh it freaked me out first time I had it. Since it was the full pig and all but after I tried it.... I ate so much
PsycheClone
Oh yeah it's terrifying looking, I avoided it until it was put on a plate.
TheRicM
Did you try the sauces and vinegars? It's all about the sauces and vinegars that go with that dish
d0uble0h
Mang Tomas for life.
TheRicM
Gyeah
PsycheClone
I did, and pancit, and Kare Kare too but I didn't enjoy those as much. I gained weight in that relationship.
TheRicM
Lol, yeah, it’s a different diet for sure
