See that big clunky bastard? That's a goddamn telephone. That's all there was. You'd have to stick your finger in the hole and spin it clockwise and wait for it to spin back for each and every goddamn digit in somebody's phone number. And if you dialed a 9 or a 0 it'd take a good three or four seconds for that fucker to spin back to position. 2 - clickclick - 1 - click - 9 clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclick - 8 clickclickclickclickclickGODDMNPIECEOFSHITROTARYDIALTELEFUCKINGPHONE!!!
You'd actually hate people who had big numbers in their phone number. What? Your number's 222-1142? Sure, I'll call you and invite you to my party. What? Your number's 897-9079? Well, fuck you buddy. Have fun sitting home all night spankin' it to the Sears fucking catalog.
The good news was that if you were calling a local number, you only had to dial 5 digits. So if you called the phone above you'd only have to dial 67760. So there's that.
Gotta take a shit? Bring a magazine cuz there's no phone in the bathroom. Gotta drive somewhere? Better get directions before you leave the house. Gotta go grocery shopping? Better make a fucking list and bring it with you. Gotta take the dog outside so it can shit in your bushes? Well, maybe your crush called you while you were standing outside. Maybe she was gonna ask you to come over and have sex. Maybe. You'd have no idea. Oh, and if you get in a car accident, you better crash somewhere where people can see you. And you better hope that one of those people can make it to a building that has a phone in it before you die. Or you're gonna die.
Now let's say you call somebody and they're not home. You'd hear the sound of their phone ringing in the headset. You'd hear it ring... and ring... and ring... and ring... and ring... forever. "Well, I guess they're not home. Or else they're dead. I have no idea. There's no way to know. Oh well. Try again tomorrow."
And if you called somebody and they were already on the phone talking to somebody else, you'd hear a dull double-beep. *boopboop* - *boopboop* - *boopboop* - *boopboop* - forever. You'd have no way of knowing who they were talking to, or how long they'd be. And they'd have no idea that you or anyone else was trying to reach them. You'd just have to try again every few minutes and hope for the best.
Then came this pretty prick. This was the wall-mounted piece of shit rotary phone that people usually hung in the kitchen. See that cord? Yup. No walking around. Just fucking stand in the kitchen with your family walking around eating and making noise and shit while you're on the phone.
Now let's say you're a kid. Middle school, high school, whatever fucking age you start getting interested in girls, or boys, or whoever floats your fucking boat. Let's say you want to call your crush one evening and talk to her. You had to wait until no one else was using the phone. Then you had to stand in your kitchen and dial your crush's number. And if you got a busy signal, tough shit, you're not talking to your crush today. And if it just kept ringing, tough shit, you're not talking to your crush today. But... the worst... somebody answers but it's not your crush. Maybe it's her dad, and you have to be polite and introduce yourself and ask his permission to speak to his daughter. Yeah, good fuckin luck, Blowmeo. Or maybe it's her brother, and you ask to speak to his sister and he just fucking hangs up on you. Oh well.
But maybe you get lucky and someone in her family let's you speak to her. You're standing in your kitchen with your whole goddamn family milling around. She's standing in her kitchen with her whole goddamn family milling around. Sure, that's just a recipe for fucking romance, right?
So you see thing shiny fucking toys. The things that's been surgically fucking grafted to your hand. The things you can't even take a shit without. Go ahead and bitch about how annoying they are. And they are, granted. But just take a second to count your goddamn blessings. Seriously.
Oh, and if you're still reading this far - kudos. You're a good person. You're weird and you need a hobby, but you're a good person.
Goodnight.

I lived through the transition. It wasn't that bad before mobile phones (or even cordless) because we didn't know any better.
JCrashB
Born 1970. This post speaks from the deepest parts of my analogue heart.
dafuqsthat
hell man when I was a kid (60s) the Prefix's were letters.. my phone number was NL2-2XXX. Had about an 18" cord, also a party line.
nattyd20
dear god in heaven i showed one of those to my kids and they thought it was a combination safe. kudos to you +1
Attacker732
That might be a cool repurpose-build for one... And either really dumb or really clever.
yossa66
Just take that fucker off the hook & no one could reach you all fucking day!
LawFiveGuy
as a kid, my number ended in 9050. Now I know why no one ever called me. Yep, that's in, no one had that kind of time.
Jasperman62
+ one for Blowmeo. And taking me back to a simpler time
ohapieceofcandy
Damn I miss slamming the receiver down in a fit of rage when hanging up on someone
nero4ty2
angrily hitting "end" will never have the same effect, and slamming your phone now is just a relaly bad idea
KiteVincent
This dude is so angry
howToLoseTheGame
"he'd slam the phone" type angry
ObliqueRay
You know, you bitch about cellphones making it all easy, but in the old days you could just go off the grid and noone could find you.
legup2p
Alas! there was progress along the way ... these old puppies came with push-button dialing in a "modernized" version after tone-dialing!
potatoskips
That's why 911 is 9-1-1, so you could call it relatively quick but not accidentally call it with a rotary phone.
olddog
I still use these two in my house,![]()
smojzore
You're forgetting the 50-foot coiled extension cord allowing you to drag the handset from room to room, downing everything in your path.
whothehellareyouanyway
Yup. And you walk across the kitchen and the cord drags everything that was on the kitchen table onto the floor. Good times. Good times.
nanciesweb
And the hours detangling that thing.
yoshi
i used to force the rotating dialer to return by keeping my finger inside the hole and pushing it back into position
MouseTheFooDog
I thought that was fairly common practice? I haven't used one of these since I was super young but that's what I remember doing
cosonfused
I love rotary phones. They are awkward, clunky and impractical, but the feel and noise of it operating is so fun.
littleschmitt
I remember listening in on people talk when I was very little, I thought I was a badass. Thanks for bringing back the memories!
frosty147
I miss it. You could leave your house and if somebody needed to get a hold of you they'd leave a message on the machine. You walk in your 1/
frosty147
house, play the message, call them back. Or not. Now if I go more than 24 hours my mother thinks I'm dead. 2/2
LadyWidebottom
You had a telephone in your house? Somebody's fancy! Back in my day, we had to walk 5 miles in the snow to get to the telephone box!
whothehellareyouanyway
Did you have an onion tied to your belt?
LadyWidebottom
Yes, which was the style at the time. Gimme 5 bees for a quarter, you'd say!
whothehellareyouanyway
:-D
danso0088
What if there wasn't any snow that day?
LadyWidebottom
There was always snow.
nanciesweb
Amish?
ArcaneConjecture
"There isn't a number, you can call the pay phone / Let it ring a long, long, long, long time..."
tacoparlor
Also if you had 2 phones, you were never assured a private conversation, as someone could pick up and just third wheel your convo.
nero4ty2
lol, my gf's sister blackmailed us with a taped convo of our hs version of phone sex back in the day, had to give her rides everyewhere
thelorax12b
That's nothing. We lived in the sticks and had party lines which required you to share a phone line with 5-6 people. You had to just wait
Linkthebarbarian
Getting the courage to call a girl. Knowing anyone in her family could answer the phone.
latenightnosleep
And not one mention of trying to use a modem to access a BBS, and fighting for phone time?Phone and computer at the same time? HAHAHAHA
puppiesarepoopers
we mostly all had touchtone cordless phones by then, but yeah, that was bullshit
nero4ty2
touchtone maybe, but we definitely still had corded phones when i was first signing into BBSs
whothehellareyouanyway
Well, only cuz I never had a computer in the house when I was a kid. I had a buddy who's family had a home computer, but they had money.
puppiesarepoopers
I miss the clunky whizzy reassurance of this big old bastard - and the satisfaction of slamming down the receiver when pissed off!
capnkitkat
I have missed angry phone slamming. Angrily pushing at a touch screen just doesn't do it.
nero4ty2
my daughter asked why we say "hang up" when ending a phone call, she had literally never seen a phone that you had to hang up
epom
I fall into the "kiddies" category at just short of 20, yet growing up we had a corded phone, dial up, and I didn't have a cell phone til 1
Ranmachan
Same my friend, same. Turning 20 next month and I remember wall-mounted telephones and 28800bps modems.
epom
High school, when I could pay for it myself. The only thing here I didn't have is a rotary phone. Lower middle class is 1.5 decade behind.
ButYouAintGotNoLegs
We mostly had cordless phones (that would always die because people didn't put them back on the base to charge) but kept one corded phone
ButYouAintGotNoLegs
in case of a power outage. No cell phone until I was 18.
Notoriousbanana
Still have a rotary phone in my house useless though cause I don't have a landline anymore
flamingflamingo
Remember how long distance calls cost a lot more, but a lot of companies gave you free long distance on weekends and weekdays after 9pm?
nero4ty2
that was some early 2000s stuff right there, i racked up huge phone bills calling my gf one town over in 97
flamingflamingo
I dated an English boy when I was 16 (2002, American). I used to buy phonecards from a dollar machine.
nero4ty2
international calling, holy hell ,how much did it cost you for a typical call?
flamingflamingo
I can't recall, but I'd probably use up most of the $20 phonecard in an hour and a half call.
usernumberseven
also they were used to enter the internet....
lambaroo
oh yeah, and some dick ALWAYS picked it up to make a call and disconnected you :(
JanitorsApprentice
I don't mean to brag but I totally have a DARE shirt just like that
lickwidghost
Mine didn't have the lines and writing underneath
usernumberseven

Drugs Are Really Excellent!
HappyGobo
Is that Aaron Paul?
lickwidghost
It's Danny Tamberelli. Not sure what happened to him but he used to be on Nickelodeon

resiler
Don't forget that if it rang you had to pick it up WITHOUT seeing the number calling in...
CassiusPolybius
That was true of many landline phones, though. Still is, even.
nero4ty2
i haven't had a (landline) phone since 99 without caller id
whothehellareyouanyway
Oh yeah. Forgot to mention that! It was like Russian fucking Roulette every time that fucker rang!
resiler
Or let the entirely separate device pick it up, the answering machine, and record the message on a TAPE.
PrincessGoose
My parents still have that. I refuse to answer the phone when I'm at their house.
mirasie
I remember the horror.
chawag1
Nutinbutbootson
I remember when we first had the option to pay for caller ID and call waiting. We thought technology was soooo advanced.
Yorou
That's after you recover from the heart attack you got from that loud ass physical bell inside the phone. No digital buzzer then
eggmuffin
And then you introduced yourself, letting the person calling know who they had reached.
nero4ty2
"anderson residence, nero4ty2 speaking" Hi there, can I talk to your mom or dad!
whothehellareyouanyway
Or the great "Hi, who am I speaking to?" - "Bitch, you called me! Whose fucking number did you just dial?!?"
stardust4265
And you can make prank calls. My mamaw had a party line. Being nosy, I used to listen in but I would have gotten in trouble if caught.
CherryEmpress
Yeah I don't know how I managed back in the day. Now if a number I don't have saved calls, I don't answer and google the number afterwards.
nero4ty2
because nobody ever leaves a damned voicemail anymore
hofbrauhauss
Ohhh scary!!! And people might knock on your door too and we'd be pumped! Someone at the door!!! Now it's hide yo kids hide yo wife!!
nero4ty2
nah, now it's like, what are they trying to sell to me or what religion do they want to talk about?
puppiesarepoopers
now it's like, why the fuck didn't you text me first?!
BarfTittiesGalore
I had a guy come in my gas station today, ask me if we had a payphone. I was so flabbergasted, I didn't even offer the landline. Payphone???
BarfTittiesGalore
No. No payphone WTF bro?? You ok?
CherryEmpress
There are still a few phone booths in my city. They mostly get used by people to do drugs or pee in.
BarfTittiesGalore
Especially if it has that convenient Shelf that's some of the booths used to have great for drugs
BarfTittiesGalore
I mean so I've heard
WhyTheHellAreUsernamesSoHardToThinkOf
Until they got hip and slanted the thing so you couldn't put anything on it
InfernoTerra
I had some chick ask this a while back. Didn't want our landline cause she wanted it to be 'private' I was like mmkay she's doing something
InfernoTerra
Fishy.
OSCgal
They're around. Not common, but I do see some, usually at gas stations.
hisholybeardness
Back in the late 90s, I used to think that you must be crazy rich like Scrooge Mc Duck to afford a mobile phone.
nero4ty2
by then they weren't too expensive, my nokia 6185 was only about $200, but the bill was almost $50 a month
hisholybeardness
Dude/Dudette, I remember when Nokia 3310 came out. That was the beginning of affordable cell phones but gettin a SIM card was still too much
hisholybeardness
Dude/Dudette, I remember when Nokia 3310 came out. That was the beginning of affordable cell phones but gettin a SIM card was still too much
nero4ty2
ummm, the 6185 was release in 99, 3310 came out in 2000, and i never had to do anything with sim cards, was on sprint
hisholybeardness
Sorry. My memory's all hazy. Still I do remember that getting a 3310 and a SIM card were both expensive. Reason: this was early 00s Pakistan
nero4ty2
aaahhh, makes more sense, i have no idea what things were like outside the US then, just knew i had a 6185 freshman year of college
nanciesweb
My Grandmother got a "car phone" for her RV. It was like a aftermarket console with a corded phone attached.
whothehellareyouanyway
There was a scene in the first Lethal Weapon movie where Murtaugh talks on a car phone. Blew my fucking mind!
