got a record player for my birthday yesterday. I only have 1 record that I bought to support my favourite artist, what do you think I should get to start my collection?
my dad suggested Pink Floyd, Nirvana, (old) Green Day, Led Zep, Jack White, Radiohead, & Miles Davis.
I'm going to run over to Recordland later today and see what they have!
anyways, I'm just excited. do you think my little bookshelf speakers will do it justice?

Get a vinyl of any album(s) that you really enjoy listening to end to end. Don't worry about what other people think makes a "good album to have in your collection."

Lots of good music recs already. My only other point to add is to get some speaker stands - don't have to be fancy, but that way you can easily customize height and location (and mitigate vibration issues.) I don't know those speakers, but if they have good, fairly flat, frequency response (i.e. "studio" rather than generally available/cheap "bookshelf" speakers) you're in good shape

they are studio speakers and so far they are the best sounding speakers I've heard. I'm sure thats not saying much because I'm used to apple airpod pros but so far I'm really happy with my purchase.
yeah I made a few mistakes with my setup, im going to make some changes pretty quick here

But as everyone else said, buy what you like. The most fun part for me is the thrill of digging through boxes in thrift stores and antique malls. Do it enough and you’ll find some amazing stuff.

I picked up Dookie, Nevermind & the Darkside of the moon today. I was definitely overwhelmed by the amount of selection they had. I'm trying to get new presses for my first few records but I'm sure I'll dive into second hand as my collection grows

I'm pretty all over the place, my one record is australian hip hop. but I grew up going to concerts with my dad so I'm definitely interested in some classic rock. some of my core memories are seeing the scorpions and foreigner at like 8 years old

thanks! I've always loved music, but headphones make me feel boxed in. I used to sail the high seas for tunes but lately I've really come to love and appreciate the quality of my apple lossless collection.

solid advice, I have a list of stuff taken from my apple playlists but I know listening to a record is a little more intentional than listening to one song at a time sorted intentionally. Im stoked to hear a song in the context of the story it was meant to be told in

You're not going to want to have the turntable and the speakers on the same shelf. The vibrations from the speakers will affect the sound quality.

Yeah as an enjoyer of OCD I tend to dive in a little hard sometimes. I've got 5-6 on my list from my own music collection that I really want to hear and must dad suggested 5-6 more so I'll probably be pretty set for a while

Edifier MR3 are great starter speakers. Fairly neutral tone so you get to hear the music as its intended to sound. Put the speakers further apart, there is a science to this stuff, you want them in an equilateral triangle with yourself and then angled directly towards you. Also, having the speakers on the same surfaces as the TT is not recommended as its very sensitive to vibrations.

Careful though, it will alter your perception of music from something you listen to to something you fully absorb into your mind and soul. You can never go back to listening to lesser speaker systems. I highly recommend it!

I'll definitely check them out. I'm pretty all over the place but lately I've been diving into the Australian music scene. I don't know why but I feel like there is a lot of creativity and love for music there right now.
but I want to get the classics, some of my earliest core memories are going to concerts with my dad seeing the scorpions and foreigner live. then in my teen years I was obsessed with grungy punk

most of my current collection is apple lossless, I'm not a fan of ads on the radio and or subscriptions. I've got a pretty big list going from my playlists but I'm excited to try some new things. Mostly I was just sick of crappy bluetooth headphones and not owning anything physical.
