I always upvote NASA.
FroggyFae
This is beautiful. Anyone who calls moon landing a fake spits in the face of all the astronauts who died to make this dream a reality.
LordCommanderTomSnow
They took all these amazing photos in space with film cameras in 1969 and I can't get a cell phone photo of my friend in a bar to focus.
questionableanswers
different camera-techniques. Todays digital is not even close to analogue photography.
AsinusAdLyram
Planet Earth is blue, and there's nothing I can do...
ballisticburrito
Whenever people claim this never happened it makes me want to punch them very hard in the face. With a brick.
IMakeUpRandomFacts
Heard that the flags are bleached white by the sun and now it looks like the French landed there
Hammerdog
Thanks for the photos!!! It's amazing to me how many commenters are ignorant of this historic event. Not to mention the idiot naysayers.
youtheman
I don't know how I've never seen these. Fucking beautiful.

It's shit like this that made me join imgur. Fucking amazing, thank you.

It's cool to see the earth "upside down", not in the conventional way as it's always portrayed

Also, notice the correct proportion of Africa, compared to how it is usually portrayed on maps.

that always blows my mind that there's no such thing as "up" and "down" in space. That picture fucks with my head.
patec
you could say from the earth's point of view "down" is the sun. of course that's not completely true because it's in orbit. ->
patec
So "down" is always a point somewhere next to the sun.

True story, my dad's buddy worked in one of the 10 (TEN!) different labs the film was sent to just in case one was screwed up. he has a set.

My grandma had a set. They printed a lot of copies from the negs and gave them out to the aerospace employees that helped make it possible.

Imagine if someone walked in and turned the light on while they were being developed.

The things I would do to that person...even Hitler would think I am cruel
CakEttE
I wouldn't slaughter hundreds of thousands of Jews over that, but I would be pretty livid also.

Fun fact: Robert Capa took 106 photos on Omaha beach during the D-Day landings. All but 11 were destroyed in a photolab in London.
MajesticBarrel
you call that a FUN fact? THIS AINT NO FUN.
RawrImReallyNotGoodatThis
I'm not entirely sure how he survived. He would have been slowed down by the fact he had GIGANTIC FUCKING BALLS to take a camera to D-Day.

wait... did they develop medium format?

The cameras used were modified hasselblads 500CM without a viewfinder. So yes they shot 6x6 in 220 film

I can understand why people feel like this is faked. It just seems so... surreal.
SweetGeekling
Right? How precise everything must have been! I'm in awe of the space program.
Flyndaran
Precise and stupidly lucky. Never discount luck when doing something for the first time and ignoring solar storm risk.
ObeySparky
When you think of the things that had to happen, and in a precise order and manner, this journey becomes the greatest feat of humanity.
FedericoAstica
Starting with a cold war.

Nothing short of a miracle. I don’t care what Jim Lovell said.

I just went to NASA today since I'm doing training in Houston. They stop at the memorial for the ones who didn't make it. Many feels.
TylorNotTyler
Am I the only one who was expecting Dickbutt in space?
Mikeydyoung
This is still mankind's greatest achievement.
Flyndaran
It was a dick waving publicity stunt. Unmanned missions would have given far more scientific bang for our buck.
questionableanswers
That publicity-stunt gave people a gigantic boost in morale. The productivity that came from morale effects and inspiration is unmeasureable
patec
I wouldn't say it like that. the mars missions are impressive as well, even if it's "only" done by robots. Same goes for some other missions
swaptrick
So glad we're investing so much in our national space program now adays. Oh wait.
Flyndaran
Not even close. I would call vaccinations or GMO food development our greatest achievements. Germ theory, fire, clothing, the list goes on.
questionableanswers
taking care of diseases etc is all fine and dandy. But being able to visit another part of our solarsystem and come back home? Amazing.
ophirwaasdorp
Wait until 2030... Mankind will travel to Mars!

Yes.
CaptainHaribo
Less common. Some of the less common images.
Pawprintjj
Or even--and stay with me, because I know this is crazy--simply "uncommon."
CaptainHaribo
Well, they're not necessarily uncommon, just less common than the most common. Some of them are still quite common.
TedCunterblast
Wait, the Earth is upside down. These are so obviously fake!
nworbetan
One summer intern rotated them in photoshop, and since he left NASA nobody knows how to put them back right again.

SubmitsRandomCrap
America isn't usually in the center even on our own world maps. We're usually on the left.
tanadarko
It's true... but I HAVE seen this version before. http://www.mapresources.com/media/catalog/product/m/c/mc-amr-952795_comp_3.jpg
ArcaneM37
It's called "continental drip" - the fact that land masses all come to a point in the South makes us more comfortable calling that down.
imnotthedoctor
If you think about it, the way we think is up is only up because we say s. Why can't the south pole be north?
WhatsAJib
Because maps are mostly written by Europeans, and we the kind of nigga who likes to be on top. :)
BlackHoleSHadows
And technically, the north pole is a magnetic south pole and vice versa.
MundaneFacts
Well most of the habitable areas on earth are in the northern hemisphere.
imnotthedoctor
If there were more land in the southern hemisphere, then it would be irrelevant
AxelYamanaka
Isn't this just most of the areas on earth all together? Looking at a map, I see all of Eurasia, half of Africa, etc. in the north.
aidanomatic
Why does it look so weird the wrong way up? Am I alone in thinking it looks weird?
thepoopthrowinggorilla
In space no one can hear you whining
sporkafife
We're so used to seeing it that way up because we in the north are very self centred. But technically, there's no reason for north to be up
aidanomatic
We in the north? Speak for yourself Robb Stark!
dogdogdogdogdog
its just the majority of the human population lives in the north hemisphere
[deleted]
[deleted]
GaylordFancyBottom
Yes there is or not
jackbos
It's not that we're "self-centered". It's because the people who invented global mapping did it based on the north star.
ziggrrauglurr
Right, is in not in any way because it's centered in Europe/N.America. And in no way those areas are made to look bigger. Not at all
GromStarscream
There's other map projections out there beyond Mercator projection which is more navigational than anything; Winkel Tripel, Gall Peters, etc
jackbos
2) Mercator Projections, unrelated to north-oritned-mapping, exaggerate *both* poles, not just North.
SirusKing
Those areas are not "made" to look bigger, the projection used simply does that. It's very hard to make a curved image flat and square like
jackbos
1) Maps were invented in Europe long before anyone cared about N. America.
ShakeDog
Where's all the paranoid schizophrenics? Er, I mean where's all the conspiracy theorists?
ChomskyWouldnt
downvoted into oblivion is my guess *goes to look at the bad comments*
kerisek
What's that blue stuff at the top of the first pic?
DjAlmaric
Probably a lens flare, or residual chemistry that interfered with developping. Happens all the time
Flyndaran
MICHEAL BAY WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG? Lens flares in space are common.
DjAlmaric
I think JJ abrams is the one obsessed with lens flare. are you being sarcastic. they should arrive in the same conditions they happen here

You ever think about how the whole time they were up there they didn't know if the landing craft would fly again?
kzmidge
This... This is why looking at pictures like these gives me anxiety. I have issues.
SweetGeekling
Imagine getting ready for the initial launch knowing that.
mynameislurker
Its incredible, the shuttle looks like its being held together by duct tape.
tomatoco
In areas the hull was thinner than common tin foil.
PsychopompGecko
You have to remember that at the height of the space race, NASA didn't even get $6 billion a year. Highest percent was 4.41% of the budget.

ketum
Well, technically its called the lunar module... but I agree.
cr668288
Thank you for commenting this. I was getting irritated by them calling it a 'shuttle'
KingGambitB
I had an engineer major friend who said duct tape so good, NASA actually used it for fixing shit inside the shuttles. not sure if true doe.
mcmachack
If you go to the Smithsonian you see the spacecraft and realize they are basically made of foil, and they sent people into space with them
ixotic93a6
shh -nasa

I can't help but to think it's wrapped in tin foil.
knox902
Gold foil actually. To block cosmic radiation. I'm an astrophysicist in my own mind you know.
arsone
that stuff is thinner than tin foil. true story.
creepwood
These images are not from the space shuttle program.
CNNBRFIINF
Seriously the lunar module looks like it's made of tin foil and scraps. Amazing.
PiercedViking
Dude, we sent people to the moon using nothing but tin foil, duct tape and a pocket calculator.

NASA BUILT THE APOLLO VEHICLES IN A CAVE WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!
FedericoAstica
There wasn't any pocket calculator in 1969.
iLoveItWhenMyFingersSmellLikePussy
rukittenme
So the Apollo program never used a shuttle.
iLoveItWhenMyFingersSmellLikePussy
Nope
nonamejanie
I was just thinking how fragile the stuff looks.
Wylf
Yeah, looking at the pictures I can see where the conspiracy theorists are coming from. I disagree with them, of course, but (1)
infomuffin
Exactly my thoughts.
Wylf
the pictures do look like a bad movie set in parts :D
eggmuffin
Which should tell them the opposite of what they're claiming. What two-bit operation would forget so many obvious glaring details? :)
iLoveItWhenMyFingersSmellLikePussy
Real life looks way more boring than movies make it out.. unless you do copious amounts of drugs.. then things get really interesting ;)
longbeast
"Shuttle" means something that makes the same journey over and over, back and forth. The Apollo lunar landers could only be used once.
FedericoAstica
Disposable shuttle then.
Wisdomizer
So Janky! I'd be really afraid to land in that thing.
meccit
Yet, it is the only spacecraft to have never registered any failures in use...
Jordanc71428
Bitch it might be
mynameislurker
you get a point
DaRealSlacker
On one of their trips, they actually fixed a socalled mooncar with duct-tape, so it could just as easily have been :)
nolanbautista
..and gold aluminum foil from a kindergarten Christmas play!
PapaMurphyspizzaman
well technically its duct tape, but both spellings are used for the same bondage strips of sticky tape
drunkill
LEM, or Lunar Module. And it is held together by layers of Mylar, plastic sheet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BoPET
StacyFacey
Soooo...balloons? That makes it even better!
KarlHungusssss
why is that?

light weight, airtight.

ToastyNippleTwist
Well, it was easier than expected to find the conspiracy theorist
ButtsMcGee86
You can tell it's a conspiracy theorist by the way it is.
WoodFrog
It's not just any duct tape but gold plated duct tape
TheLastBillyBumbler
It was. Didn't you see Apollo 13? Duct tape, aluminum foil and sandwich baggies
razzledazzleNBAjam
Serious question: How does the combustion required to launch off of the moon take place without an atmosphere?
FieroDon
They're rockets - all rockets require both a fuel and an oxidizer. For the LM, the oxidizer was nitrogen tetraoxide, N204.
lambaline
They mix hydrogen and oxygen in a combustion chamber to produce thrust
Flyndaran
That would have literally been the worst fuel to use to lift off the moon. Hydrox is for when you need thrust not efficiency.
lambaline
Ok, i couldn't remember the fuel, but the principal is the same.
Oblivion59
There is an compound know as liquid oxidizer mixed with the fuel. This provides oxygen for combustion.
Frisbeetime420
I like how its totally legitimate to say that youve been schooled, totally a good thing
sbare
The Ascent Propulsion System (APS) uses several components that ignite spontaneously when they come in contact with eachother (needs no air)
IMakeUpRandomFacts
It was a great big fucking spring. Push the button and boing.... you're launched. Some people
Automatvapen
Every Action has an Equal and Opposite Reaction. Newton's third law of physics.
trget
You don't need an atmosphere if you bring the oxygen with you, like an oxidizer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascent_Propulsion_System
FieroDon
They're rockets - all rockets require both a fuel and an oxidizer. For the LM, the oxidizer was nitrogen tetraoxide, N204.
Mithi
Rockets carry fuel AND oxidant. They have to do this even in atmosphere because ambient oxygen wouldn't suffice the burning need.
drunkill
You bring your own oxidizer.
creepwood
how does rockets work in space you mean?
Einer
Here's pretty good explanation of how it works http://media.giphy.com/media/ujUdrdpX7Ok5W/giphy.gif
ian9outof10
Perfect
VodkaReindeer
Have you also wondered how radio works without an atmosphere? I did that.
cousteau
Lol, you were thinking of it as ultrasounds?
BisonForPresident
The Saturn V rocket has liquid Oxygen and Hydrogen during every stage of combustion. When a stage is discarded another follows w/ more O2.
joqe2012
BYO-O2
Hammerdog
LOL!
Flyndaran
Not all oxidizers include oxygen, just most we want to mess with.
Cloudiology
They provided the oxygen neccessary
longbeast
You bring both fuel and oxidiser. The lander had seperate tanks of hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide, which burn when combined.
FedericoAstica
If you have said oxidiamadant instead of oxidiser I still would have believe you.
DerFoxeh
This is also why you can fire modern smokeless powder firearms in space. The Ox is there already.
thegr3Ek
I know about two of these words but now I'm gonna go learn them all, +1 and fuck yeah for science
Fredfinks
oxidiser gives oxygen (needed for fuel to burn in no atmosphere, if oxygen already present gives a boost). alot of explosives use oxidisers
astropapi1
Most rockets now use LOX/LH for combustion, so all they need is a small flame (usually electrical) to get them going. PM me! (2/2). :)
astropapi1
Well, instead of burning the atmosphere's oxygen, they brought their own in liquid form. At least they do now. (1/2)
SavageHoax
Perhaps this will help you? http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/up_goer_five.png
arexm
Okay, that was amazing...
AimeeArmstrong
This should be in textbooks.
xoverthirtyx
Now ask how the thrust of that same propulsion system left no blow out crater under the lander or piles of dust on its landing pads.
cousteau
You fill one tank with fuel and another one with oxygen. It sucks if you're stuck in a planet where gas stations only provide fuel.
SiMCanada
To over simply it they bring the air with them. Most rockets use an oxidizer (air) to burn the fuel.
NutbagDeluxe
With oxidizer stored in tanks. That's how combustion in rocket engines on Earth works too.
Flyndaran
And how nitrous oxide increases an IC engine output.
wafe
Asked the same question one time at a party! But my question was centred around how is there thrust with no atmosphere to push against?
Flyndaran
Ever hear of Newton? Effectively, recoil pushes you in the opposite direction of what you "throw" out.
NightGod
The fuel is mixed with an oxidizing agent immediately before combustion.
CHACHOOMAH
Also In-atmosphere propulsion uses oxidizers for maximum volatility. No atmosphere=greater deltaV for the Xamount of fuel
FedericoAstica
Oxidizer. You can buy it at Walmart.
Gadvance
im no rocket scientist but many fuels have oxygen already in them in some form that allows them to burn without atmosphere
RocketMan2
Rocket sciencentist here, you are for the most part correct. Many rockets have a tank of fuel & a tank of oxidizer that gets mixed to burn.
ByThePowerOfSCIENCE
Not exactly. Hydrazine decomposes exothermically through a catalyzer but it's not oxidation.
Flyndaran
Don't confuse them with energetic decomposition. But that type of reaction always seemed almost magical to me.
NightRush
Before anybody starts with the damn "moon landing was faked" argument, STOP, and go educate yourself on the biggest human achievement ever.
lesserknowncharacter
Otherwise Buzz Aldrin will pop you one in the nose.
DrFiZ
Amazing (and free) ebook http://www.moonhoaxdebunked.com/ try to send it to the uneducated people. They won't read it though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
grichen93
I know it ain't fake, but honest question, why aren't there stars? There's no light pollution on the moon... jw.
killerswan
Strictly speaking, if you shielded your camera enough from the sunlight and reflections, you could see stars anyway. You can on earth.
octopolopoly
Same reason you can't see them in the daytime here. The sun and/or the earth were too bright for them too be discernible.
Hammerdog
In the "daylight " of the moon, you don't see stars anymore than you would in daylight on earth. Pretty sure I'm right on that one.
GodLikeButHumble
Daytime on the moon. Camera adjusted to daytime photography of the surface.
muscleman2000
they never went to the moon.... because the moon doesn't actually exist. It's all in the Bible, you can check!
Flyndaran
In the bible, whales are fish, and bats are birds. Not a great text on anything rational or scientific.
muscleman2000
and the moon is made of cheese

I think a "/s" wasn't really necessary on his comment, was it?

Nvidia has done a really cool experiment where they simulated all the photos on virtual moon and they came out exactly as pictured.

You can't convince conspiracy theorists with more experts. They will just expand their conspiracy.
Ezmarii
I saw the nvidia thing, comments looked exactly as you just said. dumbfounded D:

Look at those pictures man, it was totally faked. I went to page THREE of google to find out
chemenger8
Well I went to Page 3 of the Sun and found... not anything about the moon landing...

MadamPuddifoot
There are loads of people who think that, actually.

I was just looking through my history and saw this. Like most conspiracy theories and crazy opinions, it's just a very vocal minority.
Yeahmynameisshe
I know someone who thinks that. Their argument is that "someone could send a signal to the moon in '69, but modern cell phones can't (1/2)
Yeahmynameisshe
send signals/call in a subway?" (2/2)

Otterlyfierce
I love people who say the moon landings are fake - I instantly know they are utter morons and can ignore them henceforth.
doogsnova
have you at least researched it?
FedericoAstica
You know, someone could think the moon landings are fake and still be a good person.
Flyndaran
Good but either delusional or... nope delusional. Many mentally ill and stupid people are kind. No one argues against that that I see.
WhyCantIPickUsername
But they would be an ignorant person, and being ignorant of something this well known would disqualify their opinion on anything else.

Assuming they believe even the entire Apollo project existed or the Saturn V.

To anyone who says the space program sucks now: read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Launch_System
Mitchz95
Waste of money. We need innovation; the SLS is just a souped-up Saturn V.
skwh
How is the SLS just a "souped-up" Saturn V? What kind of innovation are you expecting?
Mitchz95
Something that makes access to space cheaper. Compared to the Sea Dragon concept they were toying with in the 60s, SLS is laughable.
astropapi1
Well, if they actually had fucking money...
