I read as Cannoning at first. Was disappointed

We eat what we can, and can what we can't.

All those pics and not one of your girlfriend! Well, at least I assume not...

Me too

Thank you for sharing! I got into canning this year and tomatoes are still on my to-do list. I really enjoyed the production

I think we can guess what you'll be having for dinner next time you go over to your girlfriend's place.

My old dog Ben once got into my greenhouse and went MENTAL on the tomatoes! But he only ate the red ones, and left the green. Clever boy.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's called a Greenhouse so he killed everything that wasn't green for you.

This post is quite jarring

12 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 5

Title says "canned" and all I see is jars. That bothers me more than it should.

...city folk

12 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

That's what it is called lol

12 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 1

i know! are you British too?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It bothers you bc it allows you to feel somewhat intellectually superior, like this makes me feel somewhat intellectually superior.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

that's what its called, putting honey in jars is referred to as bottling, go figure.

12 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

Do you find it... jarring?

12 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

I try to say "putting up" for this exact reason. It drives me nuts. "Putting up" is the old-school term for canning.

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

yep. I helped mom put up many jars of tomatoes, green beans etc as a kid. But we used a pressure cooker

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I ALSO WANT TO MAKE A JARRING JOKE

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Can it, meatbag.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Farming was something that always ran in me. From my head tomatoes.

12 years ago | Likes 1231 Dislikes 8

I'm pretty sure I will think about this every time I deal with tomatoes now. Lol

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I just stormed out of the kitchen because ruined 20 lbs of sauce by chipping a glass into it - thanks for reminding me of my immense failure

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

My aunt once shattered a glass into a giant pan of mac & cheese my mom had baked for Xmas. I maintain she was jealous of mom's cooking.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Whoa. Glass won't actually spoil it? Just have to be awful careful.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

I have no way of knowing if it's totally free of glass though :-( not worth feeding to other humans

I'm really curious as to why he doesn't look miserable. I know I was as a kind when I had to process strawberries. Maybe he's getting paid?

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

This is only sorta related, but after 22 years, I finally come to enjoy a nice tomato slice (after always loving ketchup, marinara, etc.).

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"Cooking a pot of tomato skin and excess tomatoes" - what do you do with this? I've always composted the skins.

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

(2/2) and that way they'll end up seedless skinless tomato puree to make soup or paste out of.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am so glad you asked! I wondered too, because I just compost it as well.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

...Sauce?

12 years ago | Likes 2400 Dislikes 11

As a city girl and someone not familiar with this process can someone explain it? (The purpose of boiling jars, etc)

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Also, when storing food in an oxygen-reduced environment (canning or vacuum sealing), anaerobic bacteria can make the food toxic.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

which is why they are not only vacuum sealed, but also freaking hot. Bacteria-destroyingly, protein-tanglingly hot. No anaerobic bacteria.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Boiling the jars before putting anything in sterilizes them, boiling them once they are filled seals them. If the seals are not(1/2)

12 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

perfect the canned food will go bad because air will get in. (2/2)

12 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Also, people in cities can things too. :)

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I CAN THINGS AND YOU CAN TOO

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That pun was jarring.

12 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is that David Tennant?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Something tells me they've done this before.

12 years ago | Likes 276 Dislikes 1

Probably in a smaller scale, but yeah. Probably.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 6

Looks like they're pretty used to doing it at this scale, actually. Everything seems too organized for them to have not.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Really? Cuz something tells me it's been posted before too...

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

but then why are they buying new jars?

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

They might sell them or give them as gifts.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Because those that you sell or give the canned tomatoes to don't give you the jar back.

12 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

But... why?

12 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 16

Tomatoes are cheaper in the summer and taste fresh. So, to make sauce in the winter would be more expensive and less tasty.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

To sell. To eat. To give away. Farming.

12 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

For the glory of satan of course!

i wish i could upvote this 20 times.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Food...marvelous food!

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

if you grow even a few tomato plants you can end up with a massive crop. your choices are: eat all of it, let some rot, or can it for later.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

How many plants/how long to make this much, and how hard are they to keep alive? This sounds like something I should get into pronto.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on a few things, namely, your local climate and growing season. Talk to your local plant nursery and/or online growers club.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But does it need to be done on such an industrial level?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can do small scale canning, no problem! But this way everyone there can take some sauce home, and it's less overall work.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it does when you have 350 pounds of tomatoes to can before they go bad. Also, on this scare, you're done in a day instead of it taking aweek

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

They were growing a type of tomato that ripens all of its fruits at once, probably because they want to do all their canning at once.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

126 jars. You're welcome.

12 years ago | Likes 1463 Dislikes 9

You used a calculator to find out 18*7, did you?

12 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

until you realise it's just 14x9 :P

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

or do 7x10 plus 7x8 which is 70+56=126. easy head math achieved!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just depends how bad you are at addition but you do nearly the same thing with 18*7 directly.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah. I'm a hairstylist. I can't math.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Well, I'm an engineer for what it's worth, and am not ashamed to confess that I did use a calculator :p

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well if the engineer used a calculator, than clearly I'm some sort of math god for solving this equation!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

You're not. I am just a retarded engineer :)

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can also count.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

$5 a jar makes you $630. It's not a get rich quick scheme.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also have to subtract the cost of the process

You're forgetting harvest/soil nutrition/season.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So if you think of that in terms of large scale production as in a factory... You get what I'm sure is a multi million dollar industry.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

keep the points on this uneven and it'll drive you crazy right? just a hunch x

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
