A Week of Sharks and Fishes presents: Game Of Sharks. Coming to a Discovery Channel near you tonight!

In the great kingdom just below the surface of Earth’s landmasses, a battle for supremacy is taking place. Hundreds of shark Houses (i.e. species) compete fiercely for the right to claim the Jagged Tooth Throne and rule as King of Earth’s Sharks. This deadly competition lends itself to the many subtleties and incredibly high intelligence of sharks, but is unbeknownst to the humans who inhabit Earth (namely because we just made it up).

There are hundreds of shark species on Earth, a select few of which form the Major Houses, while the rest live in servitude to the nobility. Let’s take a look at some of the shark Houses who are called upon to play The Game of Sharks.

House Great White: The King Of Sharks

It should come as no surprise that House Great White reigns as the king of sharks. Like they say, “a great white never delays his threats.” The words of House Great White, See Me Soar, refer to their ability to leap out of the ocean when they hunt. Their leap is so powerful that they can fully clear the water on a jump! They do it by accelerating as they swim upward from a depth of 100 feet. By the time they are right below their prey, the great white is moving at around 20 miles per hour and hits its victim with enough force to instantly stun or kill. This method is used frequently upon seals, which make excellent dinners, and rival sharks, who may be scheming for the Jagged Tooth Throne.

House Hammerhead: Nobility, Not Carpentry

Although House Hammerhead is a powerful group, they are highly sensitive to being teased about their T-shaped head. They have been so picked on by other Houses that hammerheads have retired to the warm, tropical areas of Earth. They are fierce predators, though, in part due to their uniquely-shaped head. It features eyes at each end, which enables a nearly 360-degree field of view while in motion. It also helps them maintain balance and pick up electrical impulses from other creatures, which is a primary way they detect prey.

House Tiger: An Insatiable Appetite

The appetite of House Tiger is well known across the land, and with it comes their ambition to be kings. (There is in fact a rumor of an alliance between Houses Great White and Tiger, a betrothal of young King Sharkffrey to eligible Lady Sharkery). The tiger shark is viewed with some criticism, because they are known as “the garbage gut of the sea.” You see, tiger sharks will eat just about anything. Odd items found in a tiger shark’s stomach include a chicken coop, a bag of money, boat cushions, a tom-tom drum, barrels, overcoats, boots, explosives, hyenas, monkeys, deer antlers, and a bag of potatoes. So uncouth.

House Whale: The Gentle Giants of Oceania

The size of a whale shark may intimidate you, but like another gentle, simpleminded giant we know, House Whale proves that looks can be deceiving. At more than 40 feet across, the whale shark is the largest fish in Earth’s ocean, but they are not aggressive hunters. This House is among the pacifistic group known as “filter feeders,” which simply swim along with their mouths wide open, sucking in whatever happens to be in their path. (This usually amounts to plankton, small fish, and lots of water). The whale shark swallows the food and expels the water through their gills. One should not fear the whale shark...unless one is a small fish.

House Bull: We Have Anger Management Issues

If you think House Hammerhead is sensitive, then you’ve seen nothing yet. One must never offend a member of House Bull. Although these sharks are considered medium sized, they pack in the fury of a giant. Their anger and aggression make them very formidable on the field of battle. They also do not take kindly to cravens; because the bull shark is one of the few shark species capable of surviving in both freshwater and saltwater, their prey has nowhere to escape. Bull sharks owe this ability to their kidneys, which can remove large amounts of urea (a salty compound) from the bloodstream, allowing them to survive in freshwater. As a result, the bull shark can be found in lakes, rivers, lagoons, and the moats of rival shark castles.

House Blacktip Reef: Sticking Close To Home

House Blacktip Reef sharks are homebodies, often sticking close to their coral reef habitats, which are located in warm, shallow waters. But do not think them gentle and weak; the blacktip reef shark travels and hunts in packs, with many sharks circling and surrounding their prey before they strike. Although they may not have ambition for the Jagged Tooth Throne, family pride and the protection of their native reefs is very strong with this House.

House Broadnose Sevengill: What Do We Say To The God of Death?

Let’s speak of House Broadnose Sevengill in hushed tones. One never knows where the servants of the many-faced god are lurking. The broadnose sevengills are the rogue sharks of Oceania. They are deceptive, skilled hunters with many methods of attack. Their modus operandi is to hunt in murky waters so they can execute sneak attacks, but they are a highly intelligent House capable of analyzing a situation and choosing a tactic accordingly. These sharks are also known to hunt in packs like wolves, forming a ring around their victim to prevent any escape. Winter may never come under the sea, but you can bet a war with House Broadnose Sevengill always will.

Shark Pup Tax

In the great Game of Sharks, we’d like to think of House Discovery Channel as the maesters who provide wisdom and counsel for all. Earn your link in shark knowledge by visiting Discovery’s Sharkopedia and don’t forget to catch Shark Week tonight 9/8c on Discovery. It’s all Shark N’ Awe!

REMEMBER when discovery was about education, not making up stories and then using the word unbeknownst to describe their knowledge of them.

I love how promoted posts are like superbowl commercials. Ads, yet people like them because most of them are actually good. +1

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Usually i hate adds, but i feel like the majority of advertisers on imgur actually put time and effort into their posts to appeal to us 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as in the imgur community, so i dont really mid them

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No Basking Shark?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey Discovery... Can we go back to the real documentaries about sharks... and cut out the shit about "mythical" creatures?

10 years ago | Likes 125 Dislikes 5

I, too, would like to Discover things that aren't bullshit.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

But... muh megalodon conspurracy

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or, if you insist on showing fake shit, show us Jaws, Sharknado, Deep Blue Sea... so at least with those we know what we're getting.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah the flying Great White one was pretty legit.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

THANK YOU

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And fucking mermaids and ghosts. Discovery has long since lost credibility with the people that used to look forward to shark week.

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

why is everyone so offended by those? They dont pass them off as real, people are just too dumb to read.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I thought the Mermaid Documentaries were jokes done by them on like April Fools.....and people took them seriously...

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Cause people are dummmb. My cousins (godblesstheirhearts) thought they were real. fkm

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I laughed so hard at those, but I watched them all because I was completely fascinated by the amazing, astounding level of bullshit.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sharks are good for you

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I used to love your shark weeks. How about you assholes make it about conservation again, instead of sensationalist stories of shark bites!

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 5

I slide.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That isn't a bull shark, it's a sand tiger shark.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you!!! You the real MVP

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

House Blacktip Reef For the Win! Also, House Whale gets a big fins up from me.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey @OP, thanks for going the extra mile to understand our community and craft an ad you'd know we'd love.

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 4

"Make an unpaid intern browse the site, take notes, read all the comments, and then we'll make the ad using buzzwords to seem like we care"

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 13

And you know this because.....? Oh right, you're just pulling it out of your ass because you're salty.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Chill the fuck out, it was a joke. You need to take a break from this site if you think I really care about how imgur handles business

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You cared enough to make the comment which was uncalled for.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If youre going to attack me, Im going to respond. "You pulled that out of your ass" yea, you really set the bar for appropriate discussion.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

But hey, that intern got to browse Imgur and we got to see a decent ad post, so it sounds like we're winners all around

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Honestly, its not as fun to browse as it used to be and ads trying to pin down defining traits of the userbase to sell better is insulting

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 11

I guess it's a matter of opinion. Ads suck in any form, but at least these companies are trying to connect with their demographic rather

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I just dont care to be pandered to but some people like it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 6

than putting up a shitty ad and calling it a day. They're definitely playing to the circle jerk, but you can easily click to the next post

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I feel like we need to start a list of "good promo posts" and "bad promo posts" to show advertisers what we want. To me this is the former.

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

No thanks. I already have Google reading my emails so they can better sell me shit, why encourage it that elsewhere? Is nothing sacred?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 11

I'd rather get ads that are related to my interests. What's more, what he's suggesting has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT YOU SAID.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Well promo posts are here to stay, unfortunately. But there's a big difference between this and the independence day posts.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

as a woman, the only shark week I look forward to.

10 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 4

savage as fuck! wonder if I can get these before shark week airs???

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My dear, that's not "shark week", that's "chum week".

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

as a man, i pee standing up.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
