Instrument case in seat.

Member of the world of aviation here: this is actually pretty common, due to the enormous cost of the instruments.

I bet he really orchestrated a plan for that one.

12 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

As someone in airline ground services; this is a very good idea.

12 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

You could say those flight attendants are a little.... high strung

12 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

A musician (and his cello) were kicked out of Delta's frequent flier program because he always bought the cello a seat and (1/2)

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

the instrument (Mr. Cello) was accumulating its own frequent flier miles.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why, cello there

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He must have felt pretty strung out after all those questions.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He even buckled the cello in +1

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I bet Yo-Yo Ma doesn't have to put up with that shit

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Cello? pfsht... Try being a Bassist...

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

... what about the contrabass sax?

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh, FUCK that thing. I played it once. I'll stick to my tenor, thank you very much. :)

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you played one?? i'm jealous now, i wanna play one. X)

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you ever played a Baritone Sax? It's like that, but takes SO MUCH more air. Plus, it weighs a fuckton.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well i play bass clarinet, never anything bigger than that. plus, it rests on the ground so i dont have to worry about weight XD

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ok to everyone saying that is a girl not a guy, no shit its a cello

12 years ago | Likes 645 Dislikes 4

I miss Tom, the legendary trombone from high school.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

All of my instruments have anthropomorphic names and personalities. My favorite guitar is named Charlotte. She's a babe.

12 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

most of my electronics and such have names....... when i get a guitar, her name will be judy.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Classy.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

senk you *curtsey*

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I bet she has nice curves.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But it's a female cello...

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't trust a musical instrument worth that much to baggage handlers either.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

real question is: would sending it via postal services be better, or would it be the same BS all over again?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd bet on the same BS all over again. I wouldn't trust that much money (or anything sentimental) with the postal service either.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

oh man. well, at least my bass guitar would still fit in the seat. drummers are probably better off getting/renting a new kit when overseas

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you're famous (or rich enough) you can usually ensure safety of things (huge, hard, padded cases) and you pay a LOT extra to get them on.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I assume thats what drummers or big bands in general do, but if you can't afford it its probably better to just rent one at the other end.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if youre rich enough, you could fly your private jet. j/k, no musician is that rich....

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

aaah it's buckled in and everything

12 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 0

That was the first thing I noticed. He buckled his buddy in.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not a bad idea, I had a $25000 USD BB brass tuba written off when an airline decided to drop it when I flew with it breaking its wooden 1/3

12 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 0

Ow. Sorry.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

travel case and crumpling the instrument bell, their insurance company was not very happy to have to fork out for a new one. I didn't 2/3

12 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

mind too much cause the new one is much nicer to play than the old one ever was. 3/3

12 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

What happened to the damaged Tuba?

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Its been kept as a spare to be used for practicing on if any of ours are in the shop being worked on.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Was gonna ask what you did, I always wanted my own Tuba, but could never afford one

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thats cool, I always wanted my own, but could never afford it. I wanted to play in a local group here, but god they are expensive.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

25 grand?? damn!

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Top of the line brass certainly isn't cheap, most brass bands have 1/2 a mill or more worth of instruments on the books

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I'd like to see your face when someone tells you that stringed instruments can cost anywhere from $50 to 3.2 mil

12 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

jesus. i knew instruments were expensive, (I play one) but that's insane...

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Turn it on its side, CELLO... you have a Bass!

12 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 3

As a cellist, no. No you don't actually. Still love that movie though.

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

You're fun.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*whispers* I know. I just like the movie. :)

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Oh ok good. Your username does not mislead :)

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I do try, my friend. I'm assuming that your username also does not mislead. And that makes me happy. :)

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well it is appreciated. And no, it does not (that said, the doctor part is in progress)

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm lucky my violin fits in the overhead compartment LOL

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'd be fine with that. Don't even have to share an armrest with a cello case.

12 years ago | Likes 207 Dislikes 0

And a cello case won't recline its seat into the lap of the passenger behind it.

12 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Blame the airlines for that, not the passengers. Most people can't sit bolt upright for 5+ hours, let alone sleep that way.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And no tall people can support the weight of a reclined seat for more than 5+ minutes without intense pain.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Request the exit or front row. Sorry, but I'm reclining my seat. You didn't choose to be tall, I didn't choose to have spine issues.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Well then why don't you buy a 1st class seat? exit row seats are pricey and in high demand. My mom didn't chose to have knee issues.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or wear horrifyingly awful and heavy perfume.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Plot twist: There's a body in the case.

12 years ago | Likes 249 Dislikes 2

Some weird, kinky shit. I like it.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

With the new scanners these days, I don't think that would fly...

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A friend transported a skeleton in a cello case. A horrified musician told her she shouldn't check it. Explaining why it didn't matter ...

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

re-twist: using it as a confortable bed

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Please let it be Justin Bieber!!!

12 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 5

Coachello

12 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 0

Yeah, definitely isn't first-class-cello

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*Coacello

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Worked at BOS years ago and met Yo Yo Ma, flying with his cello. Its boarding pass read YO YO MA CELLO.

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That's a guy?

12 years ago | Likes 111 Dislikes 15

The guy is in the case.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, this is patrick

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Other side?

12 years ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 1

it is a middle isle seat, maybe he is on the other side.

12 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

*aisle.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I am fucking retarded...how did I miss that!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's an upright bass not a cello... and it probably costs thousands of dollars, I wouldn't check it as luggage either!

12 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 21

No, that's definitely a cello. Also, those cases cost hundreds, and the cello probably costs 5 or 6 figures.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

The cello used by the cello professor at my university is worth more than his house.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's virtually certain that the case is a couple thousand.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

[Just searched for a Bam] My bad; I've had my case for ~10 years; didn't realize how much more expensive they've gotten!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Not a problem! I just bought myself a new cello & stuff less than 2 months ago. Not anywhere near that price point, ... (1/2)

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...but I'd seen flight cases and such when trying to figure out how cheap of something I could get away with. :-) (2/2)

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Congratulations on the new instrument! Seriously, isn't it one of the best feelings ever?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

At least someone realizes it's an upright bass

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Except the part where it isn't. Uprights are six feet tall and far too wide for an airplane seat

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Haha... no. A double bass wouldn't fit in the seat. You must not play one (or have to try to put one in your car).

12 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Ok wait it's sitting ON the chair... I see it now as a cello. I thought it was on the floor.

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I wrapped mine in bubble wrap and put it in a padded case and put it in checked baggage. Didn't have any problems.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My son plays the double bass and my sister in law plays the cello. The cello is not that big even when sitting. It's a 3/4 double bass.

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

It's not, it's a full size cello in a hard shell case resting on the seat ;)

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But remember, it's in a hard shell case. That adds a lot to the size.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

uhm basses are too wide to fit in a chair.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dude uprights are 6ft tall.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok wait it's sitting ON the chair... I see it now as a cello. I thought it was on the floor.

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Me too!

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Upvoted for the correction & explanation!

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Unless it's the tiniest bass ever, it's a cello.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Its a big fricking violin.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I like you. You must play violin.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope, it's a cello not a bass

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Pretty sure it's a cello.

12 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

As a guy who plays both, it's a cello in a thick case. I'm interested in what airline this is. Most don't allow this anymore.

12 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 1

Hi-five fellow BassCellist! (Or whatever we're called!) Yeah, It's a cello in a thick case half on the seat half off. A Double Bass wouldn't

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

fit :P

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Growing up I was always told this is what you had to do. What's the other option?

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Putting it up your ass.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Putting it with the luggage and allowing it to get tossed around

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

After my previous comment, our Orchestra bought these giant steel boxes on wheels filled with foam padding that we stored them in.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Throwing it away and buying a new one. I mean, not literally, but that's basically what happens.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I think that would kill a small part of me. I've had the same cello for more than ten years.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Airlines *have* to allow this, by law. If you pay for a ticket and can buckle the seatbelt, or it's small enough to fit overhead, it's good.

12 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

They refused to let my brother do it for his accordian when flying from London to Warsaw recently. Can't remember what airline.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

The trick is, they will often refuse right away because they don't want to, but that doesn't mean they still don't have to if you push.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The key to remember when companties and service industry tell you know, its not always a rule, they just don't want to, and they may have to

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I can't blame him. There are so many horror stories of beautiful instruments being damaged during transportation.

12 years ago | Likes 2323 Dislikes 2

I used to work as a baggage handler. This man is smart, you are an idiot if you transport your instrument down below. It will be destroyed.

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

My flight company actually allowed me to take a guitar for free as hand luggage

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Like mine, Last time I ever let TSA touch my cello. Costs more to fix it than i paid for it.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Met a famous guitar player outside the Minneapolis airport. He had his guitar case, i had mine. Long story short: we were both traveling 1/

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

With old guitars. His was a 68 les paul. I commented, "awesome". He said you should have seen my 1962 that joe walsh gave me that united 2/

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Destroyed by snapping the neck! I was in shock after i heard that...my current stage guitar, a taylor, fits nicely in the 1st class closet.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Classical instruments are typically insanely expensive, irreplaceable, delicate, and utter works of art. I wouldn't let it out of my sight.

12 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

I wish I could do that for my dog.

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

my friend marches SC Vanguard, flying back from a camp with a brand new Yamaha baritone, airport security broke the second valve slide off.

12 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 0

Aaaaaah!!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

+1 for DCI on Imgur. Sorry to hear about your friends baritone however.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I march Scouts. always pull the trick where I act like Im gonna carry my mellophone on, then put it on the rack outside when it doesn't fit.

12 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

...as they do.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Airport security almost broke the neck of my violin by picking it up by the scroll when pulling it out of my case & not unlatching it (1/2)

12 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

(2/2). I nearly had a conniption and now when I fly with my violin, I do not let the TSA touch it. Fucking idiots.

12 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

As a former violinist, I audibly gasped in horror at this.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Seriously wut? Everyone knows it's easier to take out things after the case has been opened first.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

As a guy who handles loading bags onto planes, totally not my fault.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or, in the case of guitars at least, going "missing."

12 years ago | Likes 205 Dislikes 1

I always carry mine on. One time I wasn't allowed and was freaking out the whole time.

12 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

What do you expect when TSA’s workforce consists of the bottom of society’s barrel?

12 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 4

The cases I know of were airport luggage handlers, pre TSA. Security has probably made it harder for those guys to walk off with stuff now.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i can verify, my friend is a baggage handler at LAX and he tells me stories all the time of others not caring because of the insane workload

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I would've linked it if you didn't. +1

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Upvote for awareness, move to the next picture out of anger.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I work in the industry, this is an extremely good idea.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Itzhak Perlman just puts his violin in the overheard compartment.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This. SO MUCH THIS!!! I was forced to check my viola after already having it approved as a carry-on because of the small plane. (1/2)

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I watched in horror as they literally threw it onto the conveyor belt upside down. Screw you, Delta. The plane wasn't even near full! (2/2)

Dame you for beating me to it. But +1 for well themed reply :)

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Jep, my mum did that once with her cello. No good ending. since the I do the same as that guy for my cello.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

some instruments are worth a shit ton of money. my bassoon was 16k in HIGH SCHOOL

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Bassoons are CRAZY expensive. I'm not sure why you are being downvoted.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

right??? I was just trying to explain that sometimes it's wort it to get that thing insured and buy it a plane ticket

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

cello = shaq violin

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Can confirm it's common :D entire orchestra's cello section (about 10 of us, including me) bought tickets for our cellos and sat them down!

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That must've been an awesome sight :D

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

'Cello, is it me you are looking for?

12 years ago | Likes 1700 Dislikes 11

Go home, Sean Connery. You're drunk!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's actually a contrabass. I'm fun at parties.

12 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 5

No it's not. Note that it's sitting on the seat.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah no. It's a cello.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

oh my god that is SOLID

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

oh my god. yes

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

yeees

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Chello, you gotta bass.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are your seated next to me? Is your seat 27B? I've puuuuurchased another ticket for my instrument's case, so just get ooooout of my faaaace

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I can see it in your strings, I can see it in your fingerboard

12 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 0

this is great

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It would, but airports are know for little discretion in handling baggage. If it's a valuable item, might be better off paying for the seat.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I can C it in your eyes

12 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

yes.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not so much the airline as FAA regs re safe stowage of things in the cabin. Taking a seat is lost revenue. Purchase the seat, no prob.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A fellow musician here, no idea why someone would downvote this. It's accurate and annoying.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I hope your not referring to the flight attendant "making you check it"? Of course you need to buy a seat for it it's huge smart one. Uggggg

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a cellist, this is incredibly common.

12 years ago | Likes 1173 Dislikes 6

As an airline agent, yes, it is relatively so. When we check them in their "name" is usually something like "Mr. Cello Instrument."

12 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

do you ever laugh if you see that?

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Only always!

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

As the boyfriend of a cellist with a three hundred year old, five figure cello, yes, this happens a lot.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

â‘  As a TSA agent, I will agree. We have very strict regs about how we can treat instruments, but the baggage handlers handle checked luggage

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*Airline-contracted baggage handlers

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

On behalf of imgur, FUCK YOU TSA AGENT. Get a real job. Thanks.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 6

Congratulations; you've just managed to be a dick to the coolest TSA agent I've ever talked with. Honestly, I hope he gets promoted.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

So you actually want the TSA agents who give a fuck about your luggage to quit?

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No, I want you all fired, and private companies with accountability hired. I fly often. Always hassled by you and your gestapo friends.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Those private groups are required to give ex-TSA agents preference in hiring procedures. Sorry you've had a few bad experiences. I have â‘

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

â‘¡ a lot more than us between here and there, and when you handle 3K bags a day, tenderness seems to fall by the wayside. Busted latches and

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

â‘¢ straps caught in conveyors until bags buckle do still happen. Instruments can be massively expensive, and many with large instruments,

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

â‘£ they aren't replacable. Passengers often prefer to buy a ticket than to collect on the insurance but have to buy a new instrument.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

⑤ I mean, just imagine having to fly with a stradivarius. I've heard about people buying tickets for instruments that will fit in carry-on.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

as a guitarist, it's comparably common for us to bring our instruments as well, but most airlines don't make you purchase another ticket.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as a cellist also, i concur

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, buying an airline seat is a lot cheaper than a new cello if the airline ruins it. My violin is always my carry-on, I'm glad it's small

12 years ago | Likes 124 Dislikes 2

not anymore! quantas made me put it under once - i was so scared the whole flight

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

On my last international trek with my violin I had to deal with a grown man having a tantrum over the space it took up in "his" overhead.

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

as a bass clarinet player (bass clarinetist?) i hope i never have to fly with it. the case would break even from a small fall.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ironically, I chose the cello over other strings because it was big. -__-

12 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

i LOVE the sound of a cello. I begged my hs orchestra teacher to let me play cello one year and adored it, its got such a lovely tone :D

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a bassist, *sigh*

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

A guy I went to high school with is the principal bassist with the Cleveland Orchestra. He always buys a seat for his bass.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah it's just a bitch to carry on.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

He can get away with only guying a single seat for it?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Really good question - I have no idea, actually. Maybe first class?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You don't get to use that sentence too often right?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a trombonist, I'm glad to play the biggest instrument that still fits in an overhead bin.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

hmm... think a bass clarinet would fit?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably. Bass clarinets come apart in more pieces than a trombone. So most of their cases are pretty compact that I've seen.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

as another cellist whose dear friend came back with bruises from China, I can confirm.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a cello, I can confirm this statement

12 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 1

Yep. My dad did this with his. Bought it in New York, bought a plane ticket for it on the trip home. Because **** checking instruments.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Let's all take a moment to appreciate the poor pianists.

12 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I guess it's a trade-off: you can't take yours, but you're much more likely to find one where you're headed.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yup.. Airlines do horrible things to instruments

My dad worked for Delta for a good amount of time, and when I needed to travel with my cello he would make me rent a cell there instead.

My dad took his new accordion home to Brasil, put it in a cushioned hard case, COVERED it in "FRAGILE" labels... still ended up losing keys.

I was with the Purdue Band when we went to Ireland for the St. Patrick's day Parade. From Ireland to the US, so many instruments were broke.

You poor bastards...I'm guessing the airline also refused to cover your losses?

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

hehe, not after our one director got ahold of them. They're all fixed now. We don't ask how.

The cold alone is enough for me to say "Not a chance." My cello is (annoyingly) temperamental w.r.t. climate.

Airlines have a habit of throwing things into planes haphazardly, I remember reading about a guy who lost a 30,000 dollar instrument to them

12 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Well, consider the person loading likely makes less than that in a year ... Pretty sure the amount of fucks they give is that much less

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Not to say that's right, of coarse

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And taxi cab drivers make barely enough to live, doesn't mean they should run you into a wall sometimes

I heard a story about an violinist, who left his (very valuable) fiddle unattended, and it got destroyed by the police as a potential bomb.

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

...OUCH. That hurts my wallet.

oh...oh god...

I'm a high school student and I have this problem riding the bus.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep. I remember having to ride in the first seat in grade school so that I could have my own seat with my cello.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I have a friend who goes to school in the midwest but is from California, he saves up and buys a seat for his guitar every time he goes home

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep thats us. I took my case (a pearl version of the one pictured) to the dealership when I purchased my first car. It was my only MUST HAVE

12 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

I do this as well!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sorry, I don't understand. What the heck does buying a new car have to do with your cello?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not all cars can accomodate a cello. You have to try it and make sure it will fit.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I remember my mom doing this buying my sister her car; it was to make sure the large cello case fit in & out of the trunk easily.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ohhhhh now I get it. I'm 202cm (6"7) so I have to do that too. With myself. When I go new car shopping, I take myself with me. Because tall.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It was fun to see the car salesman though when she's like, "Looks good, lemme just get something from the car..."

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is. I've done it once. Quite a few stares. +1 for a fellow cellist!

12 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

it's common to pay full price for a ticket for an instrument? It must be valuable and they must be good.. unless there's a baby in there...

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your username is kind of relevant

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

D'oh; I'll probably miss my cake day, too ;)

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you have to do anything getting through security?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You usually have to open the case and let them look around, but nothing that might hurt the instrument; it's usually best to (...)

be proactive and ask to help with the inspection so that you can make sure they handle it properly.

As an airline employee for only 2 years, I guess it depends where you are, I've seen it a few times.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as a curious person, how does one become an airline employee?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have a cellist friend that travels quite a bit and always buys his cello a ticket.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

as a violist, preeeeetty sure that's an upright bass....

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

maybe I'm a bad guesser, but that looks to be a lot taller than 4ish'? I'm >4' sitting, looks like case goes to ground and is still taller

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The case is sitting atop the seat; that's probably why it looks off. Also, the width of a bass would be too much to fit in a single seat.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

ahhh. I was picturing it starting at the floor :) I stand corrected! Have an upvote!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Doesn

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*doesn't that look a bit large to be a cello though? It kinda seems like a bass

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope, definitely a cello, the case makes it look a little bigger, but a bass is much bigger than that.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Cello? I'd do it for my electric guitar. I spent too much time modding it just to have the airline fuck it up.

12 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

I undid the neck on my guitar so that it would fit as hand luggage just so that I wouldn't be asked to check it last time I flew with it...

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's definitely a nice part about bolt-on necks. There are also special traveling cases made to take advantage of the disassembly.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

What kind of guitar? Got pics?

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'll just take one right now, though I can't guarantee superb quality.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

... it's a guitar, I'm sure Eldibs has plenty of picks.

12 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

What's that supposed to mean?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Picture->Pic->Pick->Plectrum->pun.
