They are. Fire ants are now in parts of Japan (Obara to be specific). I know because I sat on or close to a nest, and they made hell of my buttocks (thankfully missing all the really tender bits). It has been 4 weeks now and most of the blisters are gone but still itchy. My wife was sitting beside me, and they completely ignored her (she laughed). Funny story, this is not the first time I have had a run-in with ants, though the last time was in the 1950's)

Imagine one of the many many chambers in the colony, the molten metal flowing part way through the tunnel leading to it and stopping due to the air pressure, imagine the ants scrambling in the rising heat, no way out of their dark, enclosed room as the pressure and heat increases
