My Dad is a smart fella...Usually

Since its father's day this Sunday, figured I'd share this (it happened last week).

My Dad has been deaf in one ear for 2 years. This kind of thing would usually elicit atleast a little sympathy, but my Dad definitley fits the bill for someone who has 'selective hearing'.

My long suffering Mum finally got fed up of repeating herself and listening to his whinging so she booked him a hearing test.

The big day came and he went into the doctors surgery. The nurse took a good look inside his ear and said something to the effect of "it's all red and shiny, I've never seen an ear like it, I better get the doctor..."

The doctor comes in and he peers inside my Dad's ear. He has a similarly bemused reaction. Out comes the syringe, with a little effort and I'm sure a considerable amount of discomfort for my Dad, they manage to dislodge and retrieve the detached end of a pencil eraser. Obviously the result of a nonchalant ear cleaning gone awry.

I have no idea how he had this lodged in there for 2 years and didn't get it looked at. He's English so I assume it's down to a particularly stiff British upper lip.

He can now hear "as clear as a bell". It doesn't seem to have affected his 'selective hearing' though.

The moral of the story... Umm, be careful what you stick in your ears?!

*I posted this earlier today but the imgur app was being a dick hole...unlisted and kindof deleted all at once. Putting it down to first time poster rookie errors.

same thing happened to my son. he had it in for 3 months until he finally told me his ear was painful.

How do stupid people manage to live so long?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Don't stick anything smaller than your elbow in your ear

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you want Tinnitus, 'cause that's how you get Tinnitus. (Among other ways.)

I knew a kid that was deaf in one ear for years, until once he sneezed and a cotton bud head flew out. It made the news. It was hilarious.

I had to have a peanut removed from my ear once. Got the day off of school l, it was pretty sweet.

My dad's hearing was going. Got him hearing aids. Barely uses them. I have to keep repeating myself.

My dad was a landscaper and one day he forgot to grab his earplugs so he decided to take a bar of soap that he had in the truck and knead it

10 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

With a bit of water till is had the right consistency and proceed to jam in into both ears. By the end of the day it had dried and he

10 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Couldn't get it out. We were picking soap out of his ears for weeks.

I had to go to the hospital as a kid because I accidentally swallowed a toonie

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As an audiologist, these stories make me cringe

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does his ear have teeth? How did just the tip come off?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Damn. I had a tiny seed and my ear swelled up massive and red. I have no clue how someone could stand it for 2 years.

I don't believe he didn't go to the doctor after being deaf for two years. Let it get to surgery, just to find an occlusion in his ear.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It wasnt surgery, just his local gp

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But he still went two years without going to a doctor?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

never put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

he was just trying to eraser nagging...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I chuckled at the pun, +1

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

At least you didn't stick a sharpie up your arse...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did the same exact thing in high school. They sent me to the nurse immediately, and it was removed, but that teacher never let it go.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Imagine how fucking good that must feel

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If you put a pencil in your ear and it comes out without the eraser; how do you not see it, goddammit !?!?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Stick your dick in it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah older people. They rather think "well this is my life now" then go see a doctor and admit their mistakes.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How fuck fuck couldnt you feel it?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I have no idea! He must have pushed that fucker so far down with q-tips. Blows my mind... The nurse and doctor laughed amd laughed.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's actually pretty easy if something wedges in. There's a lot of others that get hardened wax build up too. Fits the ear canal perfectly

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I need to scratch in there. I cant imagine that EVER happening. Even if I didnt....How?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Generally things that get stuck are in deeper than most people even put q-tips in, its not like your finger would touch it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope, I dont buy it. No offense. Every once in a while you gotta dig in there a bit. ^ thats just fucked.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I had a full kernel of corn in the open hole where my wisdom tooth was for months without knowing it. I thought I was feeling ragged gum.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Jesus Christ this sounds so dumb...I can't imagine someone with any decent sense doing that.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 7

Never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear. That's what they tell you.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But I can't put my elbow in my ear. I tried.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

There you go!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Obviously this means I must build an artificial elbow for this purpose.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's these little challenges to humanity that keep the species moving forward.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Indeed. We could be one elbow in an ear away from becoming a truly spacefaring species.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I stuck a button battery in my ear when I was 7 and didn't tell anyone about it until the acid started to leak and eat the inside of my ear

I'd fault you, but that's something I'd probably do now.

I was 7, 28 now and I was trying to be the 6 million dollar man

A girl I used to work with stuck mattress stuffing in her nose as a kid. Mum took her to the docs when she smelled the rotting horse hair.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

....ew.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mattresses are filled with horse hair?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I scratched behind my ear once and my finger smelled like wet mice.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Aw man, didn't that hurt like insanely much?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It did and after over a month I told my parents and then they took me to the emergency room

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But good that you're okay.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When my sister was little, she tore apart packaging peanuts and shoved them in her ear to play "little deaf girl" then did the same (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

thing to our other sister. Mom was at the doctor forever while they tried to get out all the pieces. (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Wtf kinda game is "little deaf girl" lol

10 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

This comment made me chuckle

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A game a 4yo wants to play I guess.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Play as in act

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lolz

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did that cause any issues for you as you got older? Did it damage your eardrum or anything?

10 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

The acid ate away all the skin on my eardrum, but it grew back and I can hear just fine now

10 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 0

I am so glad to know that it didn't cause permanent damage, you're lucky!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have some ringing every once and a while but such is life

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That sounds extremely painful. Also why didn't you tell anyone?

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I don't remember probably thought I was going to get in trouble

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

NOTHING GOES IN YOUR EARS. No cotton swabs, pens, keys, NOTHING. Arghhhh

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Even ear infection couldn't stop me. Just cotton swabbed the shit out of them an hour ago...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm such a rebel, that's the only place my cotton swabs go

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You can try with your elbows, but that's about it

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Or the end of a football

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that's what my anatomy prof always told us. "the only thing that goes in your ears is your elbow"

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Put my elbow in my ear? :o

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

go for it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
