A co-worker told me he bought his children a bearded dragon that's been neglected so I took him in.
This was the condition of the beardie. He hadn't had any water for over a month, he stopped eating completely, he couldn't move at all... The tank was filthy... He had been in this pose that you see him in now for days. They thought he was going to die.
He had no natural sun light or UV lamp so he developed the notorious lump on his spine.
As soon as I got him, I rushed home to take him out of his tank and bathe him in warm/room temperature water while. He was as cold as ice and would not open his eyes. I cleaned his tank thoroughly with a bleach solution, cleaned the log in his cage and baked it in the oven at 250F for 30 minutes or so.
This is one week later after force feeding him and monitoring him very closely.
I created a paste with ground up super worms, calcium powder and mustard greens. Luckily he was strong enough to swallow but still wouldn't open his eyes or move any limb of his body throughout the first week. Prying his mouth open was very easy and he just didn't resist. I bought a high quality basking light.
Fast forward two months later
Much happier now.
The massive bulge on his back as receded dramatically.
He's fat and much happier now. So a bit of a warning to those considering getting a reptile a a pet... They can be a major inconvenience to your schedule and require actual attention. I'm not a vet nor do I have any prior experience with bearded dragons - I just care enough to do the research.

+1000 for decent people who actually care about animals! (sorry I can only give you 1 :/)
MeArePaige
If you buy a child a pet it's your responsibility to make sure they're taking care of it!!!!
mijiza
OP why do they get a lump on their back without UV/sunlight?
tmae
simple answer: the UVB helps them digest their food
SweetStache
It has more to do with malnutrition than no sun.
ninjabudgie
UVB makes it so they can absorb calcium. Without calcium, their bones become soft and form weird. It is called Metabolic Bone Disease or MBD
mijiza
Wow that is really fascinating, thank you!
ninjabudgie
If it is an early case it can be reversed - in severe cases the poor babies have to be put down because they are in extreme pain/can't move
WhitneyHoustonWeHaveAProblem
I love bearded dragons! There was one named Izzy at the nature center I worked at. She was all kinds of sassy but she loved being petted

Also, kids can't be tasked being the sole caregiver for pets. They can help as part of a family effort, but the parent needs to be in 1/2
MADhouse64
That was my thought too. We have two guinea pigs and a snake. I'm always having to remind the kids about food, water, clean cages, etc.
sandibebop
I have those NanoFish for my almost 3yo son and he STILL manages to kill them. Lesson: Children love animals but are shitty caregivers.
sandibebop
Fyi: They're robot fish. They're toys. They're not real fish. That's why this is funny.
serella
2/2 charge of making sure the pet has food, water, clean living space, and anything else it needs. Kids generally aren't responsible enough.
Kittygomeowmeowmeow
And please don't keep a caged animal in your young kid's room. They need to be in a shared living space so you can supervise
PlasticFantasticLover
Exactly! This is what my mom did. we wanted a bunny, so she got a bunny, but it was her bunny, not mine, so of course it loved her more.
PlasticFantasticLover
I was allowed to have ratties when I was large enough to lift the giant cage alone :3
hoofbeatsandsnowflakes
kids are forgetful as fuck as well. It's not really even their fault, depending on their age. That's just bad parenting
serella
Exactly. They just can't be expected to be 100% in charge of an animal's welfare. A parent needs to take charge.
PrincessMerida
I had a ten gallon tank when I was 5. By the time I was 7, I cleaned it myself. Now I have a 90 gallon turtle tank. Maintained solo at 17.
hoofbeatsandsnowflakes
nice. I could handle cleaning, but their filters would always break or do something stupid and I never got the hang of fixing that shit. 1

piconoe
He probably didn't even know for a while. I bet he just walked into his kids room and saw it didn't look good and called his coworker.
criscowhitewall
Yeah fuck original "owner". LETS SEE HIS KIDS GO WITH OUT CLEAN WATER FOR A MONTH. Fuckin cunts
LegendaryMoonlightSculptor
Why are you blaming the kids, everyone starts out a fool.
laestrella
But no clean water for a month, how does anyone let that happen.
criscowhitewall
POS asshole is my guess
JustSomeEnglishGuy
piconoe might have the reason in the other reply to my post, other than that I'd say try asking OP.
StringNotFound
He's a parent to 6 kids and they have a lot going on. I'm just glad they gave him over to me.
Dawnstempest
Still no excuses. Even if you have twelve kids. If you take something under your care, you care for it. Make a list, keep to the list.
WhiskeyGinger84
Nobody deserves ANY pet if they don't take care of it. No water for a month? Despicable.
tmae
tbh I only give my pet snakes water about once a month, if not less often, and even then they only occasionally drink after they feed
WhiskeyGinger84
So I'm on the new app & it seems my original response was half All caps. I promise I wasn't yelling at you. :) this thing is glitchy!
Ringshadow
My beardie has NO idea what water is. Bowls of water, water droppers, spray bottles, soaking in a tub of warm water. Nothing. Blank stare.
Ringshadow
I wash his greens under water and put them in the bowl right after.
WhiskeyGinger84
As I replied to everyone, since OP mentioned it, I thought it was necessary. But I've learned it's not necessary. :)
HentaiSensai
Bearded dragons don't need water and won't drink it. They get all moisture from their food, which obviously they DO need..
WhiskeyGinger84
Good to know. I figured it was necessary since OP mentioned it.
StringNotFound
I also assumed it was necessary considering he drinks a ton when I give him water. Should I not do that?
Ringshadow
I say if he wants it, offer it. He/she might be trying to make up a deficit.
Dawnstempest
Do it, he's probably still lacking something, or he's making sure he has water in case he ends up having to go without it again.
bkelley
I always keep some in my beardy's tank. He only drinks (very) occasionally as he gets regular baths and enough water through feeding (1/2)
bkelley
But it just makes me feel better knowing he has the option of drinking if he chooses. Sometimes he just chills in the water. (2/2)
bkelley
Here's my buddy Bane:
flamingflamingo
Bearded dragons are actually one of THE easiest lizards to take care of. You can only fuck it up by giving no fucks at all.
theholliellama
Crested Geckos are way easier to take care of than beardies. :P
theweevil
Cresties are not just low maintenance, they're also pretty chill.
flamingflamingo
Never had one. I did say "ONE of the easiest" not "the easiest of all time" though.
tmae
not entirely true, since they do require both heat and UVB, while there are plenty that require less heat and no extra UVB bulb
flamingflamingo
I've kept a few lizards, including geckos and iguanas. The only thing I've found is easier than a beardie is an anole. Heat and UVB are>>
tmae
I would say leopard geckos are pretty easy, and they don't require as large of a habitat. Similar to anoles, long-tailed lizards are cool
flamingflamingo
I had a much harder time with my leopard gecko than my beardie. Really struggled to get the humidity level and the're strictly carnivores.
tmae
I figured the carnivore part would make it easier, since you don't have to worry as much about what's safe/unsafe to feed veggie-wise
tmae
but I can see how having to constantly buy/feed crickets/worms/roaches would be an issue
flamingflamingo
just bulbs you buy. I wouldn't consider that effort. Other lizards require a specific humidity and have more difficult temperaments. 2/2
tmae
you'd be surprised how many ppl don't want to buy that extra bulb, or don't realize that the uvb stops before the light burns out
StringNotFound
Yeah... this beardie had a heat lamp (no uvb) that was left on 24/7.
flamingflamingo
Doesn't mean it's not easy to find out. If someone can't take care of a beardie, they're a a fucking idiot.
tmae
very true. I'm just saying, they do require *some* effort
bostondegenerate

infamous bulge? I'm confused. What am I missing?.. :)
loriloveslore

melaniemeep
Ahh sorry my dirty mind brought me else where ;) I answered below about what one of our customers did with a similar situation. It would 1/?
melaniemeep
awful shaking too. I do not know for sure if this is MBD but from my experience, what has been described, and PM the new owner it sounds

it. It can be easily avoided through dusting foods with calcium and vit supplements and providing the animal with the correct UVB. 6/6
melaniemeep
4/? to be this. The only certain way is an X-ray to check bone density but the situation the animal had been in previously would lead to 5/?

StringNotFound

If it is a cockroach it can live forever even w/o food. Plus they are better dead imo
KobaltKnight
I keep roaches around because they're great food for beardies. And they're not nearly as difficult to kill as people think.
TheFeralDog
Well yeah a bearded dragon eating them, does tend to kill them.
TheGirlWhoCouldNotEven
My ex kept roaches as food for his tarantula and he never fed them! I was only there twice a month since there a lot of distance between 1/3

As humans being part of the earth who feed off animals, we can still love them and make sure they live a happy life until they become food.
Tinuviel
I had Madagascar hissing cockroaches when I was a kid, they can literally live on dog food.
GlowGreen
I've heard dogs can survive on dog food as well, so it cant' be that bad.
ReccaDark
This might be a stupid question, but did they hiss a lot? Or just when startled ... ᵒʳ ʲᵘˢᵗ ᵃᵗ ʸᵒᵘʳ ᵉᶰᵉᵐᶦᵉˢ⋅
Tinuviel
They hiss if you touch them, and if they're trying to get funky with another roach. other than that they don't hiss much.
ARoguePumpkin
They don't hiss too much. Sometimes they hiss at night or at each other, but mainly when startled. At least, that was my experience.

Even dogs. If you want a good/happy/well-behaved dog, you have to know how to"talk"to them.
MrStudMcMuffin
You know. I have had this idear since forever. That you need a license to drive 2 ton dead thing, but not to buy and raise living things? ->
MrStudMcMuffin

Hermit crabs, too. They can actually live a very long time, it's just most people don't properly care for them.

turkeysandwiches
Telling people fighting fish need heaters and filters when the pet store sold the fish in a wine glass is impossible!
Kehy
And decent tank sizes! heck, goldfish really need a pond and not a tank at all!
turkeysandwiches
Yeah I just feel bad for fish, they have no effective way of expressing their pain unless people know what to look for
jimmycarrsweirdlaugh
I warn everyone i see looking at a ferret of the dangers ie) destroyed/missing property, escaping pets, cancer, more cancer
jimmycarrsweirdlaugh
People need to do a lot of research before they get a pet. It's a tiny life you are responsible for, not a neat toy or fashion accessory.
AttorneyAtLager
Recently in Iowa two ferrets ate off a babies face.
jimmycarrsweirdlaugh
I'm going to go with those ferrets were not properly treated or fed or socialized with a child. Poor babies, both human and mustelid.
jimmycarrsweirdlaugh
It's no safer than leaving the baby with a starving dog.
pulitown
Ferrets are pretty labour intensive though, aren't they? And I have read they have a much higher quality of life if they are fed a Raw diet
jimmycarrsweirdlaugh
Not really, Hour or two of play time, rest in a nice big cage. They are smart though so constant supervision is needed. We once found (1/?)
jimmycarrsweirdlaugh

jimmycarrsweirdlaugh
I started reading up on the raw diet as mine last two aged, though they were very healthy. I does sound better than kibble, but they (1/2)
jimmycarrsweirdlaugh
also need sunshine for vitamin d which a lot don't get being stuck inside a house all day. If I had another I would go raw for sure.

Same with ferrets. Too many people think they are herbivores or omnivores, when in reality they are carnivores and veggies can kill them

Thank you for sharing this! Too many irresponsible reptile owners.
fangwulf
Thank you so much for giving this guy love! Beardies are SUPER sweet and he deserves an amazing life!
wintersolace92
Bless you, it hurts to see people with pets and they are not to learn how to take care of them. Bless you.
Norua
You can be proud of what you did. Keep on the good work.
spicepoet
helped with care of a rescued solomons island skink. was one of the best experiences i've had. lot of work but worth it. you go, herp nurse!
jas2davir
No op, thank you for saving that majestic beast. I really hate it when people get pets that they can't handle and let it die.
LarvaLamp
I actually STOPPED having exotic pets as a kid when I realized I didn't know what I was doing. I felt bad and decided cats were easier.
dinosaursarebadass
My brother breeds leapord geckos. I'm going to a reptile expo tomorrow to help sell them. I love these kinds of posts! Good job guy! :)

You're a decent man. I don't care about animals in general, but this is just cruel and stupid. Tell your co-worker to suck a dick.
illtrytocomeupwithsomethingwittylater
You post about reptiles and how to care for them. You're doing Jim Morrison's work :)
Ihave6cats
You are that little dragon's savior. :))

He's adorable! What's his name?

His name is Pascal. :)
BlueShwagger
You did that animal a great service. Thank you from across the internets!
straightcreepen
I wish everyone cared about animals as much as you do- then situations like this wouldn't happen. Good on you though!
Celtics4251
Normally I don't care for "pet recovery" stories but I found this one to be both interesting and scrupulous of OP, good job!
StringNotFound
Thank you. I have a soft spot for helpless animals.

Instead of saving bitches from dragons, you save dragons from bitches.

my friend has turtles and tells me about forums and all the stuff he does. it really is no joke

I adopted an iguana and couldn't believe the condition her owners kept her in. +1 to you for this!
becausebugeye
I always wanted an iguana. Absolute BA reptiles!
RaefWolfe
If I get another one, I am going to get one as a baby. Codie is hard to handle (vets, cleaning, baths) because she is afraid of people :(
becausebugeye
I've heard it's best to get them young and keep them social. Lest they become afraid of people without interaction.
Em001
my sister has 2 rescued beardies :) you did good OP :)
builtfordtough
You're wonderful. I see a lot of exotics that are neglected purely from lack of education. You did great with this little guy!
miscelliamous
You deserve every one.
McKavian
You fucking rock, OP. Good job on saving a life.
ManikM
The poor baby. He looks so much better though. Good for you.

And now you're double dipping? Eh. +1
StringNotFound
I didn't mean to. I posted that when the initial post had 100 votes.
Anthony88
Dude.. beardies don't need water. They get all liquids from food. You'll blow kidneys out if they've too much water
akom
Came here to make the water comment (wasn't aware of the kidney thing). Otherwise, good job OP.
StringNotFound
Duly noted. Thank you for the advice Anthony! :)
F0rger
Please don't stop giving him water. They still need it, but they need very little because they're a desert animal
Anthony88
No worries mate, they will drink but are stupid, they'll drink to the point where they'll do themselves some damage
SassieBeardie1208
Actually they need do need access to fresh water. Mine gets his trough baths. He'll drink what he needs and moves on. I leave a small dish.
Anthony88
Access to water yes, they will drink but are stupid, they'll drink to the point where they'll do themselves some damage
F0rger
This. A shallow bowl big enough for them to climb into is ideal.
SassieBeardie1208
Yup. Tho I realize my typo now.
Cuntortionist
Thank you for not feeling the need to say this in a FP edit.
UnicornasaurusRex
A million upvotes for you from a fellow reptile lover! I hope your beardie lives a long, happy life with his new best friend!
ShitSteve0Says
As a reptile fanatic I love that you did this. Reptiles deserve as much attention as dogs and cats
IAmRelevantToThis
I used to have beardies and they make wonderful pets, I had to give them up for my career but I hope they went to a home as good as yours
MoonyWormtailPadfootProngs
I love animals and people who help them. Thank you :)
ITryToOnlyRespondInGifs
I don't know how to take care of a reptile but I'd think food and water would be a must. Why weren't they giving him food and water????
ITryToOnlyRespondInGifs
Just kidding about the water...I should've read all the comments before commenting!
crispylikechicken
Idk why, but to me a response comment from OP is so much better to me than an "edit" after the post makes it to the front page.
StringNotFound
I agree. I wasn't in it for the front page but I'm hoping that it informs some people if they're considering getting a beardie.
Duplodocus
I'm proud of you fellow Imgurian! Stellar job!
rougegorgeisfrench
You have definitely gone down as a good human in my book! This warmed my cold, reptile-lovin' heart <3
PsychopompGecko
I'm all for this, considering I live in Florida, where former pet pythons are outcompeting native alligators.
Randersuarus
My sister rescued a baby beardie from the trash. He was too far gone but she helped him get a full tummy and get comfy. Good job with yours!
tmae
"from the trash" O_O :'-(
IcedVenom
I had a similar experience recently with two neglected little turtles which had actually been taken from the wild! I want to give you a hug.
DepressedCrow
As a fellow owner, thank you so much for caring. My heart aches for all the neglected ones.
ambermae513
I took in a beardie from a family that had 2 little kids who were rough with him. I've had him over a year now, healthy.... but still mean.
madeanaccountjusttopostthis
i've got a beardy too! /a/Vw9WK (3 pics) really sad to see neglect, but silver lining is that dudes like you exist. you go!
StringNotFound
Awesome! Your beardie looks great.
KeepToYourLane
Tell your coworker to go suck a bag of dicks. What a shit pet owner. I'm so glad you rescued him. I would love to see more updates.
st3lla
You've done an amazing thing!!! Congrats and best wishes to you and your new pal!!!
InboxMeYourNudibranchs
Have you tried phoenix worms/black soldier fly larvae for MBD? Had an old rescue with a fused spine who got a little flexibility back.
InboxMeYourNudibranchs
I'm an idiot, I just re read the part about your nut having any beardie experience. Carry on. :)
InboxMeYourNudibranchs
Cough....not* having any experience. I'm doing good. WELL. Shit. /wrists
StringNotFound
I will read into this - and no worries about typos. My initial post is full of them. Thanks for the advice!!! :)
InboxMeYourNudibranchs
Absolutely! They're high enough in calcium that you don't need to dust them, and beardies are able to absorb all the good stuff--also 1
InboxMeYourNudibranchs
2 they eat it up like candy :) Here's to chubby, happy, healthy dragons!
Vespii
My sisters fiance had the same, with two chinese water dragons, the owner had been feeding them the dry meal worms you give to birds o.o
LabyrinthCharm
You're awesome.
Gonvin
Just adding my two cents you took time to nurse a dying animal back to life in my book you my good sir are a borderline superhero.
F0rger
I previously owned beardies. Had to give them up when I moved and was really sad. Thanks for saving this one.
SamMan
As someone who loves reptiles thanks.
StringNotFound
Any time!
DoYouGrokHorton
It costs a lot to care for an animal properly. Both money and time. And it doesnt stop.
tmae
you should look into dubia roaches. I have a colony that I use to feed my beardies, and it's a lot easier/cheaper than crickets
StringNotFound
I'm feeding with super worms at the moment but I will check into that.
Ivyhopper
Thank you for giving him the care he needs. You are a good person.
RaynSideways
Thank you for adopting the poor fellow. This is what happens when people buy pets they have no idea how to care for.
BrightStarEm
Great job, poor little guy was hopeless. Even lizards need love!

I'm so jealous! I used to keep turtles as a kid (properly). Now I live in a country where I cannot legally get reptiles to keep as pets :(

Do reptiles develop any sort of bond with their owners? Do they enjoy scratches behind their "ears"? Can they do any tricks?
StringNotFound

Well earned points. I'm part of a local reptile hobbyist/rescue group, if you have any questions or concerns, let me know.(1/2)
BaoAlex357
We've had success with a few severe beardie cases (meth lab seizure and severe malnutrition). (2/2)
StringNotFound
Oh wow, that's insane. Mostly, any advice in regards to helping him regain more function with MBD would be awesome.
BaoAlex357
Interaction time (climbing from hand to hand, or hold on to your shirt) pass as physical therapy, may need to move the limbs yourself at 1st
StringNotFound
That's actually really helpful. He doesn't like to move a lot on his own and I was wondering if it's a good idea to give him phys. therapy.
BaoAlex357
UV lights, balanced diet, and a reptile supplement (may have to get sneaky with the sup, some don't like the powder), and lots of time. :)
DisingenuousAssertion
Thank you so much!
stonerfrog
You are wonderful. Thank you for saving him!
DidItForScience
Good job, but those worms don't sound very "super" if a mere mortal can grind them into a paste.
StringNotFound
I use a magic bullet. It's magic.
DidItForScience
Hmm... your logic checks out.
AnonymousSan
good on you man for taking care of the poor thing. i recommend spiking his/her food with calcium, I have one, it keeps him healthy.
AnonymousSan
lol sorry i missed the part where you said that
StringNotFound
No problem! But yes, it's helped with the issue with his back. He's moving around a lot more.
