Saw this on the front page.

Can't allow this kind of crap to confuse and misinform, so here's the reality of the post.
Original post: http://imgur.com/gallery/OtH0R7M

MRW

First, any paper in the ear would act as an earplug, it wouldn't render a person "completely" deaf.

Ear anatomy

Here's the basics of the anatomy of a human ear. The outer ear and canal (6: external acoustic meatus) runs all the way to the eardrum (tympanic membrane). Anything in the canal would be easily seen with an otoscope by even an untrained eye. The eardrum separates the middle ear from the outer. When you "pop" your ears, you apply pressure to the auditory tube (2), which opens the auditory tube allowing the air within to equalize to the external environment after you stop applying pressure. There is never airflow through a healthy eardrum.

Otoscope

You might remember this from any time you go in for a check-up.

But what if his eardrum was broken/he had tubes?

(Healthy eardrum above)
Many asked this question. Again, the paper would have been spotted by even an untrained eye. So, even if he did have a hole to apply a considerable amount of pressure out his ear, this would have been addressed by a doctor.

This is what the eardrum looks like under various circumstances.

There's no place for paper to hide, especially enough to render a person "completely" deaf (this is impossible). The paper, organic in nature, would have decomposed and would likely have lead to an ear infection, again, being dealt with by a doctor.

Another image of how tubes work

for funsies.

So...there's that.

So what you're saying is http://imgur.com/0AkbZqG

I've already got a hearing aide in each ear. I've had 'em for about a year and a half. Like I said, it gets progressively worse at random.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, this post went well, so perhaps I may just start mythbustering the front page with that as my theme

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On a related note. I have popped my ear before and could hear better until the pressure equalized again - then my hearing went down :(

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Idk why you were downvoted.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

While I didn't think the post was correct, I will say I put a rock in my ear and it took three doctors to find it...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Halfway through the original post I knew this had to be a joke. Source: I've had 4 eardrum replacements.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For a site that loves science so much, an awful lot of stupidly obvious bullshit gets believed, upvoted, and rationalized.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Now all of a sudden everybody "knew" straight away.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...It upsets me that this post was necessary. The absurdity of the original story should have been completely obvious to everybody.

I once had an ant in my ear. Worst 2 hours of my life, feeling it crawl all over my ear canal.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I *do* blow bubbles in my ear every time I blow my nose or sneeze. But I don't have an eardrum in that ear, after a nasty infection

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

my nephew had a wax covered BB in his ear and several visits to no avail til grandma poured hot saline in and smacked him... old magic

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sounds like he needed some Tussen. Tussen fixes everything. And Windex

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm not a doctor but I wondered, wouldn't the moisture and the paper lead to either A) decay of the paper or B) a massive infection?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Like, genuinely curious...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Most likely both

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I actually had something similar to it happen with 3 major differences: it was crystallized earwax, it only slid out, and I could still hear

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And that's why I did not believe this story

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TL;DR : Front page post was a lie.

It probably just feels like you move air out your ears, unless you perforated your eardrum or have an old tube

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes. Yes you are. Eventually.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or I know nothing about ears and I didn't think someone would take the time to put a bs story like that but I'm learning that happens often

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Agreed. I know a lot of things. But not a lot of those things are about ears.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I suspected BS for 3 other reasons beside anatomy. Who wouldn't wipe earwax off their face as soon as they felt it?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or flip out and be disgusted. I guess I more focused on that he could hear again and how much of a relief that was and went onto next post

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I dunno I just think it's weird that we treat the guy who made up a story with the EXACT disdain we treat the guy who faked cancer for money

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Weird...they mean nothing when all's said and done O.o

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Eh if you care enough about fake points to make up a stupid story then taking those points seems like the most efficient "punishment"

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Those tubes are called grommets. You have to have surgery to put them in so I went under a lot as a child :(

11 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 3

Me too! I was terrified of the loud sounds afterwards

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There was a major advantage to having tubes in my ears though. Fast elevators didn't bother me :). yes yes, whine more muwahaha! Good times

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm 35 and just had one put in a few weeks ago. Didn't go under. It's a 10 minute procedure.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Me too. Once my doctor said he was just going to 'look' and pulled the tube out. I cried and called him a liar. Trust was broken that day.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Had mine done recently due to 45% hearing loss, they drive me crazy now because everyone is too loud.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Join the club. Then they told me they could fix my hearing loss by fixing either of the incus, malleus or stapes. /1

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Turns out, nothing wrong with them and the problem is with the hair cells in the corti, which can't be corrected at all. Oh joy :|

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I got tubes as achild for hearing loss. Never knew how they worked.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am so glad that it is more than 20 years after I had tubes in my ears that I'm learning that sometimes you need more than one pair.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tube are usually referred to as PE tubes, pressure equalizing or polyethylene. The only reason the put people under is if they don't 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

trust the patient to stay still. 2/2

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had those put in as well - and I had a bad reaction to the general anaesthetic so I woke up and started puking. Hospitals are fun! :D

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Administering it. I hate anesthesia.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh oh oh! The first 2 times I came out of anesthesia I was hysterically crying. The third time, I started crying as they started

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You only go under once to put them in.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Not when they fall out or need to be removed. Then you have to go under to get them out or put new ones in. I had about 5 pairs.

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Mine came out when I'd swim, I had the surgery a few times

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had ones that weren't shaped like the ones above. They had little arms that spread out on the inside. I never went under to get them out.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Meee tooo I had tubes a lot as a child. Always crazy pulling one of them out of your ear

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

See that is different. Also, they are supposed to fall out over time and do not need to be removed surgically unless they don't

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Mine never fell out. They only used local anesthetic when they pulled them out.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Interesting. I'm going by what my GP said when I asked if mine had come out at 13. Which they did.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not a doctor and knew that story didn't make sense. If you sneezed hard enough to make shit fly out of your ears, you'd break your neck.

11 years ago | Likes 2322 Dislikes 18

So the thing , what flew out of his/her ear was a temporary ear tube?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

But then how did he gain the ability to hear again after ten years?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

With a long history of ear problems and ear tubes, i can confirm this is false. Sneezing to get better hearing makes me feel like dragonborn

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Its fun to believe though

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A friend of mine last year sneezed so hard he got whiplash and had to go to the nurse

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've heard that happening. I've heard people breaking bones and popping blood vessels from sneezing too.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Okay you don't have to believe me but its true. Idk if it changes anything he was a sophomore in HS.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...I never said I didn't believe you. I HAVE heard of that happening before.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well saying breaking bones sounded pretty sarcastic to me

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1) Once on an airplane my ear wouldn't pop the whole flight. Hours later while desending I opened my mouth and this firework like sound went

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

2) off inside my head. So loud to me but no one else. Sounded like a firecracker. PEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWPOOOOOOF

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I had that happen when I took a flight while congested from allergies. On the way down I though my ear had exploded.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

lol me too

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

also don't we have a lot of earwax? I've never heard of ANYONE sneezing out earwax. EVER

11 years ago | Likes 179 Dislikes 0

Because eardrums.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I actually have but I have some condition that makes me produce a shit ton of earwax so yeah.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean, you could always just pick your ear and stuff it up your nose. Myth busted. YOUR myth busted.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah I still haven't heard of anyone doing that either... so I'm still not entirely wrong. Now you have to do it yourself to prove me wrong

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I sometimes I feel a small piece fly out and land on my outer ear or table. I don't know how to explain it.

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Same here, I always considered it happened because of excess earwax

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's happened to me too! Sometimes it scares me because I think it's a bug in my ear until it falls out.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I have the same problem. Excess ear wax. The cilia in your ear gradually push the ear wax out. When you have excess ear wax, it builds up

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And will eventually fall out. Happens to me like once every two weeks.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You can't. Not unless there's something extremely wrong and rare going on with your ear and whole..sinus area and shit.

11 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 1

So we just need to drill the right hole so we can blow stuff out our ears, then.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Not quite sure if that's how it works, but like I said before, I'm not a doctor.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I did once, but there were extenuating circumstances that wouldn't have remotely applied in the case of that original post.

11 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

From what I remember, ear wax is there to protect the eardrum. And anyone who has ever touched earwax before knows it won't budge

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

really? because I can just pull that stuff easily out of my ear. I have an over abundance, but it moves easily for me

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I meant to put easy at the end, ran out of room. But if you put it on our finger, you won't be able to blow it off your finger easily

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

oh good point. Ear wax is pretty heavy and sticky.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I had to have my ears flushed as a kid (because I was a shitty kid), and for awhile after I was confused by the sound of my own steps.

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Same. I wear hearing aids and I have to q-tip my ears a lot, but when I was younger I'd accidentally push wax down into my eardrum. 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've had to have my ears flushed/vaccuumed multiple times growing up because water would clog the wax up, eliminating any hearing at all 2/

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

One time my ear was hurting really bad. Went to the doctor and turns out it was a super tiny rock. He took it out. :) (I was 6.)

Pff, I do that all the time. Most of the time I don't even sneeze of blow my nose. I just fart.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

its a new mortal kombat fatality

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you're not a doctor, why did I show you my penis

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's not the main problem. Main problem is that the eardrum is in the way, blocking the airflow.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I know, but if you were to somehow sneeze hard enough to somehow make airflow, I guarantee you'd break a bone.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Serious question. I can blow air out of my ears... Apparently this is bad?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sounds like you've got holes in your eardrums, were you an "ear child"? Be careful of getting water in there, it's an infection risk.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aside from greater infection risk(since water can get through to your inner ear), it disqualifies you from SCUBA diving.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Plus it sticking to a girl's face? And the paper not dissolving in 10 years?!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Eh when I sneeze earwax seems to move farther outwards so whenever I have a big sneeze I'll clean my ears

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just had ear surgery and have packing in my ear. It requires so much care to prevent infection that there's no way it would go unnoticed.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm not a doctor and know that comment don't make sense. If you sneeze hard enough to make it fly out of your ears, you'd be able to sneezfly.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

WHY ARE PEOPLE UPVOTING THIS

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hello not a Doctor, I'm dad

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can definitely sneeze hard enough to do that, but the story was bull for other reasons.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

What? Trying to clear up bullshit with more bullshit?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm just saying the force you'd need to make stuff come out of your ears, given there's any kind of airflow, would snap your neck.

Im gonna have to disagree with you there, I've sneezed hard enough to make my ears pop and my neck is still no snapped

Your ears popping is not the same as having ear wax fly out of your ears.

What? Just repeating the same thing you already said? Do you get points for creating, like, bullshit combos, or something?

What exactly is bullshit? Sneezing hard enough to snap your neck?

So could you tell me why I can't hear out of my left ear? It feels like it's always clogged, and sometimes if they pop or I yawn really 1/2

Well, I get temporary hearing out of it?

Do you have a history of ear infections? Have you had tubes in your ear in the past?
