11 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Based on your username, I'm guessing this is close to your worst nightmare.

Still not enough. That was too much nope

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Alzheimer one is heartbreaking, you could make salt from my tears. Oh, here it is.

11 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

it really is for anyone with alzheimers, especially the family. My MIL died last night at the end of her battle with the disease. She was 57

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well look at the bright side. They're currently testing that cure using soundwaves. Hopefully that puts an end to that nightmare.

Vocalid.org used for people that have diseases/disorders that prevent normal speech. Super cool project and easy to help.

the downside of the trees is that in winter the leaves will fall and chaos will reign

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I figure they'd use evergreen species, that seems a pretty obvious problem. :)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That one must be bs. The lightpollution would be aweful aswell.

Dobri Dobrev is a Bulgarian! I am so proud that he is from my country!

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Same here! :)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dobri sounds awesome. Does his name mean something like "good" in Bulgarian?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yup, Dobur - good. And there fore Dobri, the name comes from that word and it means good. :) He is an awesome man!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, it means exactly "good" :)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I believe it's morning or day or something similar. Most Slavic languages have some variant of that word.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You're thinking of "dobri den" (Russian) and counterparts from the other Slavic languages, "good day". Dobro means good, den is day.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Google Translate said "good" but I didn't trust it, which is why I asked. A guy doing good deeds named "good" seemed unlikely. :)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can trust Google Translate on this one. His name really means good/nice. Source - I'm Bulgarian :)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Great. Many thanks. :)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#14 is bullshit. Rome itself had equity and great social programs. But it came from the labor of the rest of empire, who were miserable.

11 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 3

And I am pretty sure they'd be talking about citizens, and thus discounting slaves and migrants

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

So it's like saying "People in Manhattan Penthouses have excellent income equality!"

11 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

Different parts of the empire were administered differently and people's lives varied significantly from place to place.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Is any of this true or accurate?

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Its a bit hit or miss.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The voice donation one is: www.vocalid.co Takes quite a few hours and you may never know it's used, though. Saw it here a few months back.

There may have been some legislation in 1916 about wars, but that's definitely not a picture related to it. Those dudes are post WW2.

11 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 1

As someone who is active duty military, the idea of that legislation passing makes me very uncomfortable

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am pretty sure that was Viet Nam era.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How does one forget about a window being open AND never set foot in the room or notice wasp buzzing for 3 months?!

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I have a spare bedroom which I mostly use for storage and almost never enter.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Away for the summer?

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

My in-laws left a hard-to-reach window open in the guest room. Behind curtains, so I didn't see. And then it rained...

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But the only reason I have to go in the guest room is to clean before&after guests. I can see how this could happen. Plus, out-of-town stuff

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's what I was thinking? Why not give it a once over?

It's the salt flats. Salaar Uyuni!

11 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I don't really feel like travelling to many places but this is one I'd really enjoy. Plus there's cheap cocaine.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's (almost) equally beautiful when it's not flooded. Shadows for miles!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And the cartels will take you on a free against your will ride!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cheap coca leaves, not cocaine. Have a private car to take you to the flats, don't take a bus, they can sink, especially in the rainy season

11 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 1

They better be sure the trees don't accidentally spread. It would suck to go somewhere rural for stargazing and instead find glow trees.

11 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

That wont happen, theres no way that trees that waste a lot of their energy on pretty lights instead of growing will outcompete normal trees

Fun fact: you can eat the honeypot ant. I did. It was weird. Butt it does actually taste really nice

11 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 1

I remember seeing Steve Irwin doing that on Animal Planet when I was little. It really creeped me out.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh God the pun.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

A lot of insects are edible and even good for you. Of course, a lot are toxic too.

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

As far as I know, you can eat any ant.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can it go snozzberryways?

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Shit you not just watched this yesterday

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a physicist, this idea really scares me. It's powered by electromagnets, so a power outage could kill people. Better have some fail safes

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

In case of power failures it flies up and breaks out of the roof.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

pretty easily done, Electromagnetic current to locks holding pressured industrial bolts back, current is lost, locks fail bolts deploy stop

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Of course they will have UPS and an emergency power unit. Also every cabin will have its own braking clamps.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In all honesty, how is that at all practical? Moving walkways are much more efficient for going sideways.

11 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 3

It's a Wonkavator practicality has nothing to do with it.

11 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

it's good for isolating areas of the building from one another and building more interesting structures without needing 10 elevator systems

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

http://imgur.com/uNV2N5B

11 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

Dude you made me bust up laughing. You deserve more upvotes.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I agree, doesn't seem very practical. And I'm sure they have mechanical safety features, but what about power outages? Electromanets fail?

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

*electromagnets. Stupid phone. But anyway, I'd be kinda sketched out

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Non-electromagnets and mechanical failsafes. Still, yeah, outside of replacing something like an airport tram, not sure how practical it is.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Google magnetic brakes. They work with permanent magnets, and are perfectly safe.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes. But I can feel it when it does. It's my 6th sense. Also I'd be plummeting to my fucking death. Nbd.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No one here has given you the actual answer. It's so elevators can move out of the main shaft to let people out and other cabins pass (1/?)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Up until now the most cabins in a single shaft is 2, this idea allows for a virtually unlimited number of cabins to share one shaft. (2/?)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A building would have 2 shafts, one for going up, one for going down. Check their video for how it would work: https://youtu.be/KUa8M0H9J5o

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As an architect it would be great to have smaller building cores with less shaftways, however horizontal runs may block egress paths 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As we still need to get people to stairwells in emergencies before they inhale too much smoke limiting the distance they can run.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

D:

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I haven't tried them but he claimed they were very sweet with citrus overtones.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks bud!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're fed until they swell up and pretty much can't move, then other ants use him as a living vending machine whenever they get hungry

11 years ago | Likes 275 Dislikes 0

I ate one once. They're pretty good.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So.....they're honey parasites?

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

oh fuck

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sometimes they go up to the roof of their colony and hang upside down literally like storage containers. They can fall and burst as well :(

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I believe some tribes also harvest them. Like bees but not.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

They're completely edible. You just bit off their big juicy butts.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would probably eat one if it was washed.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're actually super clean. The other ants constantly clean them since they can't clean themselves.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Am I the only one confused as to why they would be different colors depending on why they cried?

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

Guessing they dye them for marketing purposes.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"And hold the garlic!"

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Am I the only one confused as to why they would be different colors depending on why they cried?

They contain other ingredients too. Tears from sneezing also has pepper in it. Anger is smoked before it's bottled.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That's a great question

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They're not real. They're just different salts with cute names. So... no reason, really.

11 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

http://www.monstersupplies.org/products/salt-made-from-tears-range Sea salt, you didn't think it was legit, did you?

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It should be noted that the Roman Empire in 150 C.E. also had an economy run on the backs of TONS of slaves. Hardly comparable.

11 years ago | Likes 484 Dislikes 17

Interns?

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Are you implying that the U.S. Doesn't outsource to countries and lock children in factories to work?

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 4

How is a working class that doesn't get paid a wage that reflects cost of living hardly comparable?

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 7

The "cost of living" now is the cost required to live a life that would be considered lavish by ancient Roman standards.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

And there wasn't anyone worth the equivalent of billions of dollars

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

ok, we should re induce slaves to save our economy, got it

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The use of CE simply needs to end.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Agreed! It really is a silly attempt to change a truly ancient convention.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also there was a lot less money in circulation, modern economics wasn't really a thing.

11 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 3

There were TONS of slaves... and less income inequality. Doesn't that just further make the point rather than refute it? Or am I being dumb?

11 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 5

It depends if the slaves were included in the Roman calculation (which I would think they were, so yes)

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Oh it's not that different. We just call them "taxpayers" now instead.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not sure if sarcastic or not... still mildly hilarious.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The thing people don't want to realize is that the differential in wealth is what drives the economy.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'm starting to think the only people on here are broke liberals hoping the gov't will give them everything they are too sorry to earn..

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The top 1% makes an obscene amount more than everyone else. Some days I feel like a slave.

[deleted]

11 years ago (deleted May 20, 2015 4:35 PM) | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

That's not even close to true. The top 1% are the billionaires and bankers

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It is true, at least in 2006 it was $350,000+ for top 1% in US. Now probably closer to $500k

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Of course that person could also be a billionaire or banker, but billionaires are more like the top 0.001%

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Okay, fine. If that were true then the wealth distribution is even more fucked

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're not a literal slave but you are certainly just a tool who will inevitably develop the thought that they're really the master

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

we have lots of murderers and what not. why don't we have slaves?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

Our prison system does provide some free labor (well it's pennies/hour). It's partly why we have so many prisoners, more than China or Russia

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure I'd want a serial rapist killer let outside to do roadworks. Behind nice strong steal bars is my preference.

While you have a point, slavery in Ancient Rome was more similar to a loan system than the brutal American slavery. So it is different.

Dozens of slave uprisings in Rome prove that you wrote bullshit.

Also, why are we calling it "American slavery"? Europe had the same thing right? I know England did.

Because, didn't you know, American slavery of blacks is the only slavery that matters, or is ever talked about. Nevermind the 27million in

slavery RIGHT NOW across the world. It's all about the evil Americans and the relatively short period of time they had slaves. Duh.

The systematic destruction of any culture that allowed any amount of mental freedom or desire for anything better is unrivaled in history.

I'm pretty sure there were slave fighting rings, but more underground and not as public. also, depending on who you ask, WAR.

then again, I live in Europe, what do I know.

Don't think that Roman slavery was less brutal. Look at their mines and massive plantations.

Look at our coal mines and textile mills in the 1900's.

On top of that, there was nowhere near the ingrained culture of slavery that American slavery had. Slaves were treated as equals once free.

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

Well, Roman law changed to accommodate that over time. I don't believe that was always the case.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You're missing my point. It's not just about what was law. The systematic way American slave owners trained their slaves to not only obey 1

It's hard to really make sweeping generalizations about life in the Roman empire, yes. It lasted a VERY long time.
