They use a mix of salt and sand, at least where I live in MI

Yeah there are other salts but regular salt is the cheapest and it's highly corrosive. Calcium Chloride is less corrosive but it's expensive

In NY they use both which can be worse, sand blasting away at the paint/coating leaving openings for the salt to attack

Segways have the same problems and it would be many-times amplified if they ran at highway speeds.

That's why there needs to be an intelligent computer system to control all of them. I know a corporation that is working on it now
