Owl camouflage is crazy. My local corvids will suddenly start going nuts and from experience I will -know- that there is an owl in the tree 50 feet away from my deck, and even then it can take me over a minute to actually spot them against the background noise of the forest. It really is like they become part of the tree itself.
Ironically the most skilled wildlife spotters I've known were not conservationists or scientists (i.e. people who study these animals, their habitats, and habits). I went on a wildlife tour through the islands off the west coast of Canadian British Columbia and without fail, this one 50 something year old dude would spot the wildlife first. Like, before the tour guide had noticed, he'd just point directly at the animal deep in camouflage. Guy was a hunter of 40 years. Eyes like a goddamn eagle.
