OK, so, I actually have a 50% chance of getting malaria. A few months ago I was given this. It's called RTS,S and is an experimental malaria vaccine. Bill Gates helped fund this with millions of dollars, I don't have millions of dollars but I am stupid enough to do this... for science! (And also cash. Lots of cash.)
Malaria kills a staggering number of people each year, and while there are preventatives and treatments, there are no approved vaccines... yet. Hopefully this trial will move us one step closer to having one!
This is the airlock they passed the mosquitos through. Note the bug spray on top in case any escape! Apparently there's quite a lot of security involved when you're deliberately breeding malaria-carrying mosquitos...
My mosquitos
I named them bitey, stabby, scratchy, dancer, and shy (because that one didn't want to bite me). I had to go three rounds with the paper cups to make sure I had enough bites.
This was the point of no return on the trial. I've never smiled so much while being injected with parasites.
I'm really disappointed that after all that, you can barely see the bites! Now to wait 4 weeks in catered accomodation to see if I develop symptoms...

I worked briefly in a mosquito lab as an undergrad and one of my tasks was to feed the mosquitoes. I ended up with 88 bites on my hand.

P. Falciparum doesn't hang out in the blood, it's much worse than that. It likes to settle down in your tissues, especially the liver. 1/2

Just as an FYI, people with the blood disease thalassemia are actually genetically resistant to malaria. Most diseases come with some (1)
