My Horror recommendations,

I really like Horror films, but there's a lot of titles I dont see mentioned in these more popular Horror dumps. These are all films I've seen, liked, and would recommend to the wary watcher.

First up, 'Devil In the Dark', which is a good, classic monster-in-the-forest story. With a minimal cast and a beautiful setting, this film is part of what I like to think is the direction of New Horror. Very little exposition, lots of ambient music and a focus on whats really frightening in the story.

'Monsters' has been out since 2010 but I rarely hear anyone talk about it. This film was beautiful to watch and led to a debate between my old man and I about the purpose of a Monster in a Monster Movie. Bonus, you get to see an example of the wall Hit- I mean Trump is trying to build!

Keeping with the Monster-Movie theme, The Monster had everything I could want in a modern monster horror. A minimal cast of two, a minimal setting of one car stuck on the world's loneliest forest road, and one fucking THING stalking in the darkness. This film also has a lot of substance, really taking me by surprise and starting yet another debate between me and my old man.

The Hallow may look hokey, but this shit was great. Told an alternate version of classic folklore and the creatures.... omfg FUCK those creatures. I saw this on Netflix and wondered why no one else had.

Do ever wish someone would redo the first Hellraiser, only more intense and fucked up and terrifying? Well you're in goddamn luck. And good luck getting through this one without looking at your phone for pictures of puppies to soothe you. Aside from how well-shot this film was, that Modern Horror tendency for very little background and lots of atmosphere really made it stand out as one of my favorites this year.

You've probably never seen anything quite like 'A Dark Song', and if you have then please let me know. This film holds no qualms in making its audience uncomfortable in order to accurately portray the lengths of these rituals or to emphasize the struggle of a person to understand something beyond the observable world. Don't bother waiting for the monster to pop out, but do enjoy the minimal cast of two and the remote setting of their creepy manor.

Fair warning, I love Found Footage so beyond this point will be a lot of found footage. Sorry not sorry.

'Devil's Pass' may have a crappy cover but the Dyatlov Pass incident is a true story which has always fascinated me. It fascinates the characters in this movie as well but the ending is absolutely NOT what anyone expected.
Found footage but not difficult to keep up with visually.

If you're into Horror, you've probably seen 'As Above So Below', but just in case I threw it on the list because I fucking loved this movie. Taking place in the Parisian Catacombs, this film was everything I wanted in a movie set in the necropolis below Paris.
Found Footage, but not hard to keep up with.

Like 'A.A.S.B', I'm sure most have already seen The Witch but again, just in case. This movie was slow, beautiful, unsettling, and that ending was exactly perfect.
Really though, did they have to put a naked girl on the cover to get people to watch it?

I resisted 'The Phoenix Tapes '97' because as much as I like Found Footage, the trailer was just really rough. However Im very glad I gave in. This was one of those gems which began to really feel like an actual collection of found footage from some poor S.O.B's at the wrong place at the wrong time. Definite my 'Alien Movie' suggestion

What I loved about this film is how it asks the viewer to decide if Deborah is suffering from something biological or supernatural (at least, at first) and then it takes an extra step. If youre looking for a good 'Possession' film, here is my suggestion.

'Open Grave' was another surprise, but was more of a suspense thriller than an actual Zombie Horror. Would still suggest, however.

My last suggestion for this particular list is We Are What We Are, which came out in 2013 but which isnt talked about nearly enough. This movie rejected the Happy-Horror which was so popular in mainstream at the time and instead tells a disturbing, bloody story.
