Wear leathers, sweat wipes off, road rash doesn't. Lesson learned the hard way. OUCH!

bought textile a week ago. Sweating like a mofo as well.
I went down wearing joe rocket airjacket w/armor, only bruised. But plain jeans tore and road rashed my leg. Kevlar rules.
It doesn't melt from the friction heat?

Leather's always better, but textile's good for a slide or two.

FutureRetroism
Nah man all the guys I see are wearing basketball shorts, t-shirts, and absolutely no helmets. Usually doing a wheelie too.
CPTNNemo
Amen. 2 days ago I fell 10m from home. Not bad or dangerous, gear has no scratch but imagining the difference if I had tshirt and shorts...
spacetimejockey
The friction is still the same, i am guessing something like that would get burning hot real fast? Am I wrong?
teawithoutmilk
Yeah but I'd rather get a hot ass than no ass
Burke616
That's applicable even without an accident.
idonthaveanyideawhatthehelliamtalkingabout
yeah it would, but it is the gear that is getting burning hot and ripped to pieces, not your skin
TheBalto
Yes. But your skin is still there, which is nice.
Of course.. my thinking was 'how hot'? Enough to get an n degree burn?
GunmanTheH
Problem is that if you fall on race track, it's just flat. If you fall on regular road, you gonna hit something before you stop
Iamthemonkeymansowhatevercats
As somebody who has slid at 70mph on a track with full race gear, that was one of the most painful things in my life. 1/2
2/2 When I see people wearing no gear, I just think about how some other dumb rider who crashed will get their organs and remaining skin.
geekontwowheels
Ok so serious question then: how does the guy above not seem fazed by the slide? Better gear?
edgeofadhesion
Gear's decent, and Moto GP riders are absolutely mental.
Just this weekend Marc Marquez dislocated a shoulder in a crash, popped it back in riding a scooter to the pits and carried on like normal
Ha! Awesome
I flipped a shifter kart so I slammed into the ground and tumbled at 70mph. He's doing 40 and lowsided.

Zoreena
I get that too. Sometimes I feel like a bit of an idiot when others are looking "cool". Then I remember I like my skin on my body thanks.
OverratedUserName
Also its easier to carry the rider away from the track if he hits the wall at +150km/h than swipe him away with a brush.
minombreeslechuga
This is the World Championship Grand Prix (MotoGP). He didn't buy any of it.
Mlarks
Yeah I love how it seems like he's just sitting still getting frustrated but he's still sliding unphased. That was great.

SixFootofFarts
He would have felt heat from the friction but other than that. Beezer.
DarkwingDuc
1) Nothing completely protects you. But I this instance, probably just a bruise from initial impact and some heat from friction. He's fine.
chamoiscat
Don't think there was enough impact for a bruise. He fell like, 2 inches
2) FYI, these guys use kangaroo leather. It's thinner yet tougher than cow hide.
catsaregroundowls
My friend died in full gear because she bought the wrong gear and was an amateur bike person.
She had shitty leather pants. She might have been suicidal anyway and not cared.
McFancyPants
Slamming into any semi-stationary object at full speed tends to make the type of gear rather unimportant. :\
Bravacado
A little harsh. Could have been ill fitting gear. Most people have loose helmets because they find properly fitted ones to be uncomfortable.
I wasn't referring to this person's friend in particular. I generally see too many people riding/driving at speeds where any crash is fatal.
She chose poor helmet, and nothing except a leather jacket.
Ouch! Sorry about your loss :\
It can be different levels of protection. Some stuff you can break a bone in but you skin is intact, so you are less likely to fall apart.
Interesting. I'm sorry about your friend.
seekerrr
Had a 100mph+ carsh at the track. Very happy about my $2000 investment. Still in riding condition too. Worth every penny.
shadjih305
I too had a carsh
BananaForScaIe
If I didn't have a full face helmet I'd be dead by now.
Brokehungryandalone
Likewise or at the very least I would have had to have had serious reconstructive work done on my jaw.
SeimeinEngelSeimeineSunde
While living in MN, I was surprised at how many motorcycle riders just go wearing t-shirts, sandals & shorts.
dweadpiewitwobbits
I cringe because I have 2 cracked helmets and dozens of healed bones.
VivaLaSteeze
You see it all the time in AZ minus the sandals. Can't say I blame them when it's 100* but you WILL crash and it's gonna be a real bad time
teskadera
How do their sandals not melt into the asphalt when they go foot down at stops? D:
imhoots
Riding my motorcycle to class, I wiped out twice in two weeks while wearing shorts. I got road rash on my road rash. Not fun.
AffenSalat
well. it seems like you cant learn frim a mistake
But I learned from two mistakes.
PartyPete
The sandals thing gets me. I get it on Harleys with rocker shifters, but sportbikes? Those shifters have to be sharp on the toes.
ShatteredUterus
People use the heel shifter? That is one of the first things I took off my Harley lol
Yeah but you probably actually ride yours instead of just trailering it to Sturgis.
I'm from Sturgis. No need to trailer :P
Ashilino
seen that pic of the guys foot turned into a meat popsicle due to stacking it wearing shoes?...
ThatOneGuyPablo
Friend of mine laid his bike over. Foot peg went through his knee and the clutch lever through his hand
BigSecksi
I survived a pretty bad wreck with just a broken leg. I stopped to help a kid in a similar accident in jeans in a tshirt. The difference (1)
TheRevolutionist
I saw a wreckage (140+ mph) the other week, guy was in t and shorts, his bone wasnt in his leg. He was conscious tho, so he was pretty lucky
Yeah this guy had a bone sticking out of his leg and terrible rash on virtually his whole body. He was conscious for a second. He walked 1
but he was in pretty rough shape. I held him till the paramedics loaded him up, got his bike out of the road, and found his phone and 3
over to me best he could and just collapsed. I caught him and went to the ground with him basically in my lap. I tried to keep him alert 2
called his mom. That was the tough part. I lied and said he wasn't too bad so she wouldn't panic on the way to the ER. It was a rough day.
I want a riding partner like you
WhyIsThisStillEvenAQuestion
Damn. You did the right thing though.
in injury was pretty crazy. Hope he made it.

Of course you wear it for it's protective purposes. In all honestly i think it looks pretty much bad ass and completes the image as well.
Onaspaceship
But full leathers suck when it's hot out. Tempting to forego atgatt
WorkerLurker
I'm trying to figure out something for that. Needs an engineer and designer to look at it though.
COLONELSARGE
The water suits race car drivers wear. Small pump circulates water.
Hardalor
The logic I hear around no helms/bad gear here in Iowa is "Why waste the money? Any accident will just kill me anyways" ...
Which is absurd. A guy fell over at a light on his bike from putting his foot down on a slick spot. Hit his head and died. 1/1
If he had worn his helmet. He would have picked his bike up with only a bit of embarrassment. 2/2
rvcaptn
it embarrassing dropping a bike ive done it twice both at stops once in loose gravel once on wet on paint
Which I'm fine with.... If dummies die from risky behavior then... should we care? That's actually good for the planet
I'd normally agree. But EMTs have to clean it up, traffic gets jammed up, and it sometimes causes property damage and other accidents. 1/2
Also, it gives us riders a really bad reputation with non-riders. One rider becomes the representative of us as a whole. 2/2
Ya. Maybe if the roadkill removal crews did the cleanup instead of EMT it would be better. I don't identify with most other riders neway

I wasn't referring to this person's friend in particular. I generally see too many people riding/driving at speeds where any crash is fatal.
catsaregroundowls
She chose poor helmet, and nothing except a leather jacket.
McFancyPants
Ouch! Sorry about your loss :\
catsaregroundowls
It can be different levels of protection. Some stuff you can break a bone in but you skin is intact, so you are less likely to fall apart.
kcrvoxtano
Not fun.
AffenSalat
well. it seems like you cant learn frim a mistake
imhoots
But I learned from two mistakes.
PartyPete
The sandals thing gets me. I get it on Harleys with rocker shifters, but sportbikes? Those shifters have to be sharp on the toes.
ShatteredUterus
People use the heel shifter? That is one of the first things I took off my Harley lol
PartyPete
Yeah but you probably actually ride yours instead of just trailering it to Sturgis.
ShatteredUterus
BigSecksi
Yeah this guy had a bone sticking out of his leg and terrible rash on virtually his whole body. He was conscious for a second. He walked 1
BigSecksi
but he was in pretty rough shape. I held him till the paramedics loaded him up, got his bike out of the road, and found his phone and 3
BigSecksi
over to me best he could and just collapsed. I caught him and went to the ground with him basically in my lap. I tried to keep him alert 2
BigSecksi
called his mom. That was the tough part. I lied and said he wasn't too bad so she wouldn't panic on the way to the ER. It was a rough day.
ThatOneGuyPablo
I want a riding partner like you
WhyIsThisStillEvenAQuestion
Damn. You did the right thing though.
BigSecksi
in injury was pretty crazy. Hope he made it.
buttershudders
Dress for the slide, not for the ride
JaiLikeChai
*as I'm drinking coffee in my gear looking at my bike*
Ashilino
whachu got?
JaiLikeChai
CBR 600
Ashilino
Cool iv got an old cb750
mroranges
I'm getting a CB300f next year!
Himgurian
Nice! What year?
BigisDickis
He has a bike, Do you not listen?
TheBlackxRanger
and coffee
CObullUshitGH
Why ride if the slide is inevitable? How are bikes legal transportation? I love riding but the logic is inescapable.
PhantomPetrus
Could argue the same with cars. While not everyone crashes, majority will at some point.. their fault or not.
ThisIsYourBrainOnDrugs
Roger that saftey first
RunningWaterMonster
Well put +1
DrDoALittleMoreThanBareMinimum
Slide ehhh if it's a water slide imma get my speedo out
Ferahael
Came her to say just that - Ride safe man
kmikl
Keep it shiny side up, man.
LiquidLizZard
Of course you wear it for it's protective purposes. In all honestly i think it looks pretty much bad ass and completes the image as well.
Onaspaceship
But full leathers suck when it's hot out. Tempting to forego atgatt
WorkerLurker
I'm trying to figure out something for that. Needs an engineer and designer to look at it though.
COLONELSARGE
The water suits race car drivers wear. Small pump circulates water.
Hardalor
The logic I hear around no helms/bad gear here in Iowa is "Why waste the money? Any accident will just kill me anyways" ...
Bravacado
Which is absurd. A guy fell over at a light on his bike from putting his foot down on a slick spot. Hit his head and died. 1/1
Bravacado
If he had worn his helmet. He would have picked his bike up with only a bit of embarrassment. 2/2
rvcaptn
it embarrassing dropping a bike ive done it twice both at stops once in loose gravel once on wet on paint
chamoiscat
Which I'm fine with.... If dummies die from risky behavior then... should we care? That's actually good for the planet
Bravacado
I'd normally agree. But EMTs have to clean it up, traffic gets jammed up, and it sometimes causes property damage and other accidents. 1/2
Bravacado
Also, it gives us riders a really bad reputation with non-riders. One rider becomes the representative of us as a whole. 2/2
chamoiscat
Ya. Maybe if the roadkill removal crews did the cleanup instead of EMT it would be better. I don't identify with most other riders neway
