Water-based technological society seems tough to get off the ground. Especially salt-water based. Additionally, having no existing "grab" capability makes it seem pretty unlikely that dolphins are next. I'm thinking octopus or crow/raven have a good shot, though.

My vote is for the octopi to make it, so that future historians need to constantly argue against the myth that civilized octoloids and humans. There will be some octoloids that point out the tentacle hentai from our time, and the scientists will have to try to argue that "no, that's just a weird thing the ancients did. I promise they didn't live alongside our evolved/civilized species."

As for octopuses: IIRC they tend to die after mating and don't really do any childcare. This would make it hard for them to propagate a culture. They would need to evolve K-selection first.

Many people are doing things. Things are progressing and, while we could hope for much better, improving in various areas. I find that seeking out information about concrete positive efforts being made in the real world is a significant balm to the soul. I recommend the podcast "Volts". It isn't relentlessly, or even mostly, positive, but it is practical and informative about efforts to combat climate change. It isn't enough, but it is good to know that things are being done.

Fine is a subjective term. The planet will continue to exist. Many of the wonderful lifeforms that we admire and love will not. As humans go down we'll take so much wonderful biodiversity with us. And the harder we fall, the more we'll take. It took a billion years to get from single cell life to where the world is now. When you look at it in those terms, forcing it to try again before the sun changes is a lot to ask. Better if we just stop being assholes.

While we are causing, and need to try to stop, an extinction level event…we aren't going to reduce life down to mere bacteria, leaving evolution to start from square 1. Five million years, ten tops, after the last human dies for biodiversity to return to 1700s levels. Again, we absolutely must stop this, but in the event we fail it's really only us that will suffer. We aren't nearly as powerful as you think we are.

"Saving the Planet" isn't about saving the actual planet, and it isn't even about saving humans. It is about ending the mass extinction event we are perpetrating, it is about not damaging our environment as it was without the cancer that we are, it is about trying to preseve the biodiversity that is so incredibly unlikely and wonderous to have occured. Every time people nitpick about the phrasing they are deliberately trying to invalidate attempts to just do what is RIGHT.

Humans are notoriously bad at long-term planning. Otherwise we'd cooperate on a larger scale, and be less inclined to kill us as a global civilization.

Unfortunately yes. Our “effective” life is essentially between 15 years old to 80. Outside of that it’s difficult or impossible to be productive. Already short. But in modern society it’s even shorter - typically 18 to 75, often less. As a result, long-term planning (50 to 100+ years) is almost impossible for humans to truly comprehend. If only we lived like the Asari from Mass Effect :)

I like this sentiment, but it's kinda... wrong. The planet will *not* be fine, unless you mean the stone and lava and such that makes up the literal earth beneath us. Nature is already suffering. The oceans are getting hot. The air is thick and clouded. The water is polluted and undrinkable. And if Earth is reduced to nothing but a rock spinning through space, devoid of life, how is that 'fine'? ...It's not.

I mean, depends on time scales and definitions. The sentiment of the original comment is that life on Earth will continue after we've killed ourselves. The Permian event is similar to what we're perpetrating now (end result was 95% killoff) and 'life' eventually recovered. So in geological time scales, things will be 'fine'. Humans suck, but life will continue without us. It likely will not be life we would recognize, but life nonetheless. (We still need to fix/stop our mistakes if possible)

I think assuming this will kill off all humans is a bit naive, too. It's possible, but there will definitely be those humans that have enough resources to continue as many are killed through drought and famine.

I don't know what all you think you can do about China and India from any place outside of China and India. Even if the rest of the world went green tomorrow, their industrialization is still significant enough it will continue to negatively impact the environment. It's not just "cost-effectiveness," it's foreign policy as well.

bro, why do you think india and china pollute so much? sure, a certain portion is for their own domestic market, but as two of world's top exporters, the majority of their industrial pollution comes from the manufacturing of cheap goods they sell to us. so that "it doesn't matter what we do in the west" mentality is dead wrong.
