Bratwurst is german for fried sausage. "Brat-" or "gebraten" means fried.

Actually it depends on the region. In some eastern parts of germany they use "braten" for barbecue while most parts of germany use "grillen"

"Brat" means a spit, not pan fried. Brät originally meant ground meat and there is a regional variant of Bratwurst that means smoked.

It can mean both and the origin is not 100% clear. In modern German it's only used as 'fried' (at least havent heard it in any other way)
