The vaporized electrolyte when they vent or blow has a distinctive smell. Not just hydrogen. With NiMH batteries it's typically just hydrogen (until they actually burn).

This gave me a flashback of the late 90's when I worked at the one hour photo inside one of the big box stores. We were always goofing off. Digital cameras weren't mainstream or decent yet. All of us goofed off. Sometimes after disassembling the disposable cameras we set the flash's charge and sneak up and press the proper contacts against exposed skin and shock them. (Never face or neck; we were serious about safety, haha). Everyone lived for those breaks in the monotony, even our boss.

I wish my electronics class had let us play with capacitors like that. The closest I came to something that exciting was watching a campus desktop start smoking during a thunderstorm because the department couldn't be bothered to invest in surge protectors for the computer lab.

I used to teach a troubleshooting segment devoted to blowing up various components and identifying them by smell. We also did the thing where you plug a pickle into the wall and watch it glow. Have to put some fun bits in there.
My teaching career was fairly short.

Such things are often about endowments. Which programs had grads that gave back. You’ll probably see little plaques with names on them thanking said grads. I guess the CS guys either didn’t make enough, or didn’t think enough of the program to donate much.

Ive seen some heat/shock resistant capacitors about the size of a coke can in very niche applications in the microfarad range. Even that was a little over the top.

Bigger doesnt always mean more charge. Kinda like how batteries can be either hooked in series for more voltage or parallel for same volts but more amp hours, the same sort of principle can apply for capacitors where capacitors in parallel mean more farads, while capacitors connected in series the farads stay relatively the same, so it is possible that the giant 100 microfarad capacitor could just be a bunch of smaller 100 microfarad capacitors connected in series in a trenchcoat :P

Years ago, I found a 2 farad cap for $10 at an electronics junk shop. I REALLY wanted to buy it, but then I remembered there's literally nothing safe or legal I could do with it in my garage, and so I let it pass. If that ain't a chekov's gun, nothing is.

2~4 Farad caps are widely used in car speaker setups to compensate for huge bass hits. I saw a 4F one earlier for like $50.

Oh, I'm aware, but my experience has been those are part of an integrated kit and constructed with specific hook-ups / form factor to be used for that purpose. This was just a loose blue jacketed cap with tinned leads - the kind of thing intended for a hobby soldering project. The kind of thing that, when paired with a garage door spring, could create the ultimate Darwin award machine.

Depends on the ESR! Equivalent Series Resistance is the internal resistance of the capacitor to current flow. Different chemistries have different ESRs, but in general larger caps will have lower (since you need more metal and thicker plates to have lower ESR).
Capacitance determines how much energy a capacitor can store, but the ESR determines the frequencies and power ratings that it can be used at, and for some (big efficient PSUs, high power radio, RADAR) they can get very big indeed.

Motor start/run caps are usually metallized paper or film caps, which are quite a bit larger than electrolytics for any given rating. A 100/450 electrolytic can be as small as 5/8” x 1 1/4”. The one in the post is… somewhat larger.
Though I’ve seen my fair share of caps smoking through ruptured tops like that. Hell, I used to teach diagnosis by smell.

My understanding is they are metalized because they need to hold pressure to trigger the pressure sensitive fuse - they are still electrolytic caps underneath. True, any cap that big will be metalized simply because it will be in a high power/mission critical position and so ruggedized and/or fused, but the point was "big doesn't mean high farad rating". Here's another one for reference.

Again, that is not an electrolytic capacitor. It is also a three phase capacitor, which means there are three caps in the one can. It has a polypropylene dielectric, and at that voltage rating is probably film and foil rather than metallized film, making it even larger. Yes, there are caps that are large for their capacity. The pic in the post is depicting an electrolytic, which is among the smallest among common constructions for their CV ratings there is. Not sure what your point is.

Nup, just a motor start capacitor, you can see the motor it belongs to at the bottom. 10k AFC is pretty common for HVAC motors, it makes sure that the capacitor won't catch fire before the fuse blows.
