Is collective punishment still a thing? I thought that died out in the 80s.
Yuktio
For me it was "Kid who Deserves Punishment" - "Is this the kid that just happened to be nearby?"
effigyoma
Teacher was trying to turn the class on the student
moreysuzzanne350
I LOVE CONFYSED ANIME GUY! Is this a pigeon?
fyemo
Collective punishment does not make everyone want to punish the kid for you, it just makes the whole class hate you.
motorwaffle
It's more that the teacher has sole responsibility over all of you and can't effectively teach/monitor both a guilty and not-guilty group.
suiseiseki
The happened so much in Catholic school I just whatever I wanted because I'd be equally punished for something else regardless.
HexStadium
Teachers can't beat up a student after school but they can make the rest of the class do it
Unclemuscles09
Teacher: "No one will go to lunch until everyone (really meaning one kid) puts their materials away." Everyone: "JESUS CHRIST, C'MON DAVID!"
solmazer
Teacher: "From now on, when ever David fuks up, I will not punish him! I will punish all of you for not showing him the proper motivation!"
reuleaux
Peer pressure is one hell of a drug
lol you're right!
Overlyattachedtodrpepperr
Nothin will ready you for adulthood like the knowledge that the idiot's fuck up the shit for everyone lol
AlaskaLarry
We do that to get peer pressure to work on our side
VeraTheWraith
yeah cept it doesnt work because the kids friends wont tattle and the losers also wont tattle because theyd get ridiculed later.
OlemGolem
Isn't that what a teacher does when they don't know who the perpetrator is?
Klemmentine
I dre a rainbow once on one of my homophobic classmates binder, he snitched and made the whole class stay in for recess until some confessed
When I finally did, everyone was let free, myself included. I thought wtf was the point of that.
Ghobe
Peer pressure is a strong tool that a teacher can use. Hated it then, but understand it now.
TotallyNotYourTeacher
Yeah, I still do it, because some kids react appallingly when you single them out. Others lack empathy, so I don't do it for them.
AceVenturasConfidant
I guess you didn't joint the military... this X 1000
CheeseBakedCrouton
You get an article 15! You get an article 15! ARTICLE 15s FOR EVERYONE!

Welcome to Okinawa where someone in another branch fucked up so everyone gets punished!
meganical
Well, how else will you get the kid to do what is needed? They clearly don’t care about the reason behind it. They mostly care about peers
TheButcherBird
As a sub when someone goes around and throws away all the papers I just put on desks and all I get from student is "not me", this happens.
AMBM2
Never liked this. All it teaches is punishment isn't based off your behavior. Why behave when you'll be in trouble from someone else anyway?

Then we will discuss apostrophes and their proper usage.
MetaSomma
And a planning meeting before that. And a pre-planning meeting. Then weekly check-in meetings to track progress

As an educator, it’s not one or two kids that trigger collective punishment, it’s when 40% of the class won’t shut up and cooperate.
I can deal with one or two or three trouble makers, but much more than that snowballs into getting out of hand.
PorneliusHubertII
My entire Biology class lost our lab time because 1 idiot could not take them seriously. Ended up doing paperwork for the whole year.
MickeA
You can wear these safetyclasses and follow instructions or you can watch from behind that big "safety"window over there.
Dude stabbed a potato.

Cause in real life people's choices don't affect others at all.
If this is sarcasm, I can’t tell
AroAce
Yeah but than punishing all is not a good solution.
ADeadlyFerret
I'll never forget when I was in the military away from my unit for 6 months. The weekend before I returned 4 guys got caught smoking weed.
The whole unit got in trouble. Including me. I literally walked in on Monday and told to report to PT the next Saturday.
We got smoked all day while doing uniform and dorm inspections. I have never lost enthusiasm for something as fast as I did that day.
I never volunteered for anything ever again and I stopped doing community service in the name of the unit. I never did any unit involvement
functions and pretty much distanced myself from fellow military people. That was the day I decided to leave the military.

Yes.

Hard for a teacher to know who did what all the time, its super f*cking stressful being a teacher, and sometimes you just cant tell ->/
/->Who dunnit
ElJefeLives
Still doesn't justify punishing an entire class for one kid's actions. Otherwise what's the point of behaving if you still get punished?
Maybe so, but it cant go unpunished either, and teachers have a lot of politics inbetween them.
1Plebian
The point is to be involved and self governing so the heavy handed solutions don't get used
dejadrew
Tell the teacher that collective punishment is a violation of Article 33 of Part III of the Fourth Geneva Convention and is a war crime.
skeerrrtt
As a Jr this will be handy :)

"So are hollow-point bullets and tear gas, but cops use them all the time."

Also tell the teacher that mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.

Reminder to some of you guys replying that this is a reference to something that gets posted here fairly often.

I'm pretty sure teachers who did this were just "turning" the class against that one student

What a dick.
BenSnow97
What a war criminal
donkeymoney
Wow, I wish I knew this in high school. A coach did this to us (group's punishment was worse, contingent upon him finishing his) and it
caused such a rife and emotional trauma, the boy and his bro quit the team by the next day.
*rift between punished and the rest of the boys
Shreksleftnut
Funny, they did that to me in basic.

Important tool for creating internal pressures towards compliance.
Zerooblivion
Collective punishment in the military is ok, I hate it in a school setting because all it does is cause whoever started it to be isolated.
Ketheres
Ditto. Well, we had a rule where collective punishment also applied to the one doing the punishing as well, which prevented the worst stuff.
hereforcake
Ha. Good times. I remember all of us doing flutter kicks in the middle of the night cuz a couple girls got caught polishing their boots.
What does polishing their boots mean
ScrewMyVacationPlansIGuess
Exactly that, back in the old days the military wore black leather boots, and you had to keep them polished, especially in basic.
chllnpart
Oh memories of boot polishing and beret shaving
Why does that get you in trouble
Scruffy2
It's actually not, as Geneva convention only applies to armed combatants during war
Raltsun
American schools, warzones, what's the difference?
thingy237
To be fair, the Red Cross is pretty bitchy to unarmed games companies that use the symbol.
MassiveClusterFuck
Aren't school shooters armed combatants? So technically American schools are always at war.
TheAdventuresofStealy
They actually have to be uniformed military/militia. So insurgents, for example, wouldn't be considered lawful combatants.
Easy, just require a school uniform
Now you're thinking with portals

Pro tip, you sorta have to be at war to commit war crimes. And no, D.A.R.E. and the "war on drugs" doesn't count.
storebrandproductmascot
I don't think the people who would say that are seriously suggesting the teacher be tried in court, only trying to prove a point.
HassanAlSabbah
I mean, do you? The US hasn't been at war since WWII. Was Khe Sanh not a war crime?
KnowerOfNothing
Uh... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_the_United_States#21st-century_wars

Well, since those are all 2000s wars the US has been in, it discounts all of what you said.
