Pretty sure this was Colin Scott, happened in 2019. He was with his sister when it happened (she recorded it on her phone). It happened at the Norris Geyser Basin in WY which happens to be the hottest thermal region in Yellowstone. Most thermal features have a surface temperature of 199F (93C) or higher (highest recorded was 280F/138C).

So...yeah. At least it was quick.

Where's that graduation picture from? Darwin University?

That's a terrible way to go

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some stupidity is so advanced that not even society's safeguards can stop them from running face first into natural selection.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And, may I ask out of curiosity, are those things constantly monitored so they don't become a body dumping spot?

What was the stuff with the monkeys?

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

A couple days ago a clip circulated of this tourist feeding chips to monkeys while locals were yelling at him not to. There was a sign starting clearly not to feed them with a penalty fine if caught. You'll easily find info about it with a quick Google.

1 year ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

News seems to indicate that he was checking temperature and slipped, rather than trying to dive in.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is the same hot spring that has a sign next to it that says it's so hot it'll basically melt your skin off, isn't it?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What a horrible way to die... So stupidly.

Happened in 2016 from the looks of it

1 year ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

I remember reading about it a long time ago, yes.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

and his sister took video of it as he slipped and fell in, not knowing that was the end of her brother (yes she did try to save him too)

I live in the UK and have never visited America, and even I know that if you visit Yellowstone, you stay on the path and don't go anywhere near the boiling hot springs.

(you also pray that it doesn't reactivate during your lifetime)

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Humanity, My reactivation has been delayed due to your constant feed of human sacrifices. This pleases Me.

Current observations from the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory indicate that the magma chamber beneath Yellowstone is mostly solid and there are no indications of an imminent eruption.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This shit comes out at the COLDEST 198f. Getting anywhere near it, you KNOW it's hot as fuck. Getting close enough to fucking playing in it?

Dude had a death wish, and Death called his bluff.

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

For those who use Celsius, that's 92°C.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thats what had me scratching my head. I've been to yellowstone and these springs radiate heat like a flame from the safety of the guard rails. Getting any closer you know it would be like climbing in to an oven long before you actually touch the stuff.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They're not all that hot. Some are cooler but extremely acidic.

"the subject was determined to be deceased" one could read that in two ways

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

the use of "" in that article makes it seem like foul play (ie when Scott fell into a hot spring “and did not get out”)

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

From the context, I'd presume this was quoted directly from NPS report, and may have even been a statement from his sister taken by NPS.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ugh!

He was from Oregon? We breed such idiots up here.

hot pot?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

'trendy' slang term for bathing in a natural hot spring, based on the name of a popular Asian meal.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So beware of anyone who has geothermal hot springs in their backyard.Hence the term as greedy as a geothermal hotspring

1 year ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

Are you my nemesis?

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In the wise words of Park Ranger Mary, don’t come again.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How would? In what way…..? What exactly would be the cause of death? Like, did he die instantly, like human body just went, “Too hot,” and died? Would the body feel like it’s on fire? Does the brain melt first? I just have so many questions and yet, I’m not sure I want to know the answers

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

The cause of death is clear: stupidity.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Could be hydrogen sulfide fumes, if the concentration is high enough its basically a light switch for animals. Literally will put a person out at roughly the speed of sound. Just near instantaneously.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I have no idea if this is correct, but maybe immediate suffocation? Imagine breathing in that steam / vapor. I feel like the lungs would immediately burn up and cease their ability to get oxygen.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

He fell into near-boiling water and would have immediately received severe burns to almost his entire body. Shock combined with panic → unconsciousness → drowning.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

If he didn't pass out from hydrogen sulfide, then his heart would stop simply from overheating. Which would be a mercy because his skin was going to start pealing off.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure you'd make it long enough to feel the heat and pain from that, but you'd pass out pretty quick.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They say hot pot, like I should know the term.

1 year ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

It's like fondue, but with oil & meat.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Usually just crabs and lobsters are into it. But you know how this cause play stuff has gotten out of hand.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seafood & butter works too.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Hot Pot," aside from the culinary dish, is also a slang term for illegally swimming in Yellowstone's geothermal features.
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/nov/17/yellowstone-oregon-man-body-dissolved-hot-spring

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

(Or any geothermal feature, apparently. I first found it in the context of this article, which suggested it might be Yellowstone slang. Sorry for any confusion.)

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a type of cooking/dining. You have a pot of broth placed at your table which is kept boiling by a burner/hotplate. You then dip in uncooked meats and vegetables using skewers until the broth cooks them through. Sometimes, the broth is reused for a bowl of noodles after the main course. It's a great dining experience for family and friends.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Unfortunately, that is not the way it is being used here. He was treating it like a hot tub.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well it turns out it was used the other way.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's when you use a natural hot spring as a hot tub. I've done this, but it was in Idaho. Yellowstone is not a safe place. You stay on the god damn fucking path when you're at Yellowstone. Do not touch or step on ANYTHING that isn't man made. Did your hat blow off your head? It's gone forever.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Remindeds of the of grandma in Dante's Peak. But, stupid.

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

There's even a literal hot pot scene at the start of the movie,as a first sign of the disaster to come.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That scene is really rough, I should watch that movie again

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The only thing I remember about that movie was a friend of mine yelling "There she goes, the super grandma!" when we were watching it.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I mean, she was pretty stupid, refused to evacuate till lava was in her living room and risked the lives of her grandkids, daughter and Pierce Brosnan.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Fun fact about most hot springs in Yellowstone- they're not just boiling water, they're boiling acid. If you fall and die in one there will be nothing left of you to bury, just like this story.

1 year ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Most of the springs are actually alkaline, only a few areas are acidic.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah, If I remember right they found part of his wallet and a plastic comb.

Jesus you people are horrible. We've all done stupid stuff when we're young. Cheering and laughing at some young guys death is fucked up.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Came to say this, too. What the fuck is wrong with people that their lives are so empty and pathetic that they have to make themselves feel good from someone's tragedy?

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

1 year ago | Likes 262 Dislikes 1

This guy apparently

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is a method of cooking and serving food. Used all over asia, but the one im familiar with is chinese. Basically making a big soup together with all the stuff you want cooked and eating along the way.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 6

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

More faster. More slower

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No. No that makes no sense but hot pot more faster for sure.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hot potting is the practice of using the thermal pools as hot tubs, some are relatively safe, others are not, people have died.

1 year ago | Likes 263 Dislikes 2

Yeah, like the dude in the post

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the "completely dissolved in a day" is what clued me in

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Man it super annoys me that that's a phrase someone felt they needed to create. I wanna hit that person with a pillow and call them dumb.

1 year ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

There is a place in yellowstone called The Boiling River where you can legally swim and the river is toasty warm but we were told repeatedly to respect 99% of the hot places.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you because I was like, “What the hell does a popular Asian meal have to do with this?”

1 year ago | Likes 147 Dislikes 0

It's made from people

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had a similar thought. Was totally fine with going with it as well. Just thinking the dude was trying to cook with a fucking geyser or something.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Burned alive? For What? Enjoying a succulent Chinese meal??!

1 year ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

I mean, if you used a reeeeeeally long stick, or maybe tie a chicken to a fishing pole

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Worse would be trying to cook food in the hot spring after a human was dissolved in it

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I'm sure he's not the first.

1 year ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

1 year ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that was horrifying.

1 year ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

TIL.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not that I'd want to spoil it for you but there's also 2 vigorous volcanoes somewhere further in the movie and Pierce Brosnan is only one of them.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

oh shit, forgot about that. yup, but natural selection and all that

1 year ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

To be fair, the hotspring didn't turn deadly until after they had jumped in, as is the way in movies.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I mean, it was deadly enough in real life for them to post a sign, the movie was just predicting the future

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But the sign in the movie was just the name of the hot spring...

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That movie is my childhood trauma film. I have the same name as the little girl in the movie, and the grandma in it reminded me of my great grandma... that scene with her jumping into the acid lake to push the boat to shore... yep, still have nightmares about it

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I do too. Also the bone coming out of the arm in the cave.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I was so confused by the shadowing of the scene. I paused for a long time until I decided/understood it was the bone sticking out and.... EUUUURGH

It's because otherwise no one would believe someone that stupid could have graduated high school

After they pulled home out, they tried to take his clothes off to assess his burns, and his skin came off with them. And his dog died too, so he died for nothing.

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

I’m completely serious when I say that at least he spared himself a lifetime of the guilt, shame, and horror of having watched and heard his dog boil to death, knowing it was his own fault. Not saying it was worth it, but that’s a small silver lining, from where I’m standing.
