You can either send a "text" to it or you can call a number and leave a voicemail and the pager lets the person know to call the VM

Police. Fire, ems all use them in my area. Lots of other companies do too.

EMS in my area has switched over to Active911. All calls are directed via text message.

Most fire/ems companies in my county use Active 911 along with the pagers. Active 911 relies on data service...which can be spotty...

It's not. It's less secure, actually. All pagers get all pages. They just ignore the ones that aren't theirs. They penetrate further than

I get paged to go to a delivery for a baby and I show up. It goes to 3 pagers at once, so we all know to show up. Quicker than 3 phone calls

Much longer battery life. More reliable reception since reception source is usually on site. If wifi or cell signal is down it still works.

Pagers can be reached in places where cell phones don't stand a chance. Mine would work in the deepest basements.

I have a pager. But I get tones/calls via my phone now too. Pagers are super reliable. Phones are not.

"Super reliable" if you have service. Our county fire runs off one tower. We have three or four in the station so hopefully one will go off.
