Some areas allow employment at 14 but with a lot of restrictions tied to hours and other things. A lot of employers don't truck with that since it's complicated and can open them up to liability.

I got a job at 14 so my family could afford to send me on a band trip. It was a bakery down the street. I was so excited that I had the power to do that - to give myself an opportunity. But back then, not many adults were taking min wage jobs and with my resume of jobs from 14 on and a college degree I paid off in a few years, I started a real career right away. If I was 14 today I'd put it off as long as possible because there's so little to look forward to. It breaks my heart.

You technically can start work at 14, but generally the hoops to do it legally just isn't worth it for most businesses. Very few hours a day, can't touch a machine that is even slightly dangerous, and lots documentation. Most of the time if you hear about someone age 14 working, there is probably something illegal going on.

i mean... that's one way of putting it, but by 18 i had upwards of 20k in the bank. i thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to have a parttime job in high school, it taught me a crapton about time management, money management, customer service, social interactions, etc., plus it gave me beer money and gave me a headstart when i moved out.
