Me and my so went for an early evening picnic. Beers and snacks on the lookout above one of the pastures. I recently took over 130 head of cattle and stuck them to chew down the grass at my dad's plot of land. So my surprise when a little after 9pm, we walk down... the whole herd was just chillin on the road. They saw my truck and waited for me, I guess? (My pickup is to the right behind a gate ~100 meters away).

I had my 14 week old pup daisy, and her brother from another mother. Duke wasn't right here at the time. Some of the heffers decided to come up to us and say hi once they realised it was me. Some were really happy for head scratches, but were a little upset I hadn't brought a new salt lick for them. Sorry girls, no presents today. I ended up bringing them 4 blocks this morning I felt so bad for them.

Loo. Coolest chick, and never saw a cow in her life. I think this is the exact moment I fell in love with this girl. Seeing her excitement and wonder, and how committed she is to being with me on adventures. She's helped me feed silage, and for those of you who know the smell of it, yeah. She never even flinched. I don't know what it was about last night, but it just seemed perfect in every single way.

This was the view from up top, earlier in the evening. Great spot in my little foothills heaven.

Edit: update!:Update for all of you who were interested in my "surprise" for Loo! https://imgur.com/gallery/g4sPN4x

Remember to thank the cows for helping you get some.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I didn't need their help. Lol

Is she Scandinavian? They love smelly fermented food.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Nope. Other side of the marble.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's the Swedes, us Norwegians like smelly dried food (tørrfisk).

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Love the view

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Wait till you see the view from my cabin. It's buried in my posts somewhere.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say we need you to post more cow pictures.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Alright, I'll see what I can do for you guys.

If you haven’t yet, check out the Beef and Dairy Network podcast; very informative and full of good advice!

Yes, advice...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’ve learned more about Mitchell’s products from them than I ever did from the company rep that visits the farm.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What about Loo's ear.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh god the smell of silage

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

? I grew up on a farm and loved the sweet smell of corn silage.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, grass silage. Whole other ball game.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

very nice job in a very nice location. I love milk and all kinds of cheese!

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Sharp cheddar on a triscuit, smoked oyster and a dab of hot sauce. My favourite snack. Or when you wake up thirsty at 2 am, and there's milk

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Think you were surprised, they were prob like wtf moo????

8 years ago | Likes 112 Dislikes 1

“Wtf moo?” Is now my favorite expression ever.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

They've never encountered me at night except for when I went AWOL last weekend and camped out with them at the gravel pit up there.

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

People who share moments of love really make my heart melt. I'm very excited for you, her, the cows, and pups!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Awesome, I love cows

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

As corb lund said, "may you always have cows around"

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice. The night time farm pics remind me of “night riding” in the horse pastures at camp growing up - just you, a bridle and your horse

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

That used to be some of the best times growing up. I had a horse when I was 16. I would saddle up and go for a ride, camp the night.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I get you. Bc camp horses, we were only allowed to ride them at walk, trot, canter. First time galloping was under the stars, epic freedom

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I used to be wary of galloping in the dark. Then i realised how much fun just tearing across a field is.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That first time was on Hollywood - used to be top of the herd + w/ age became very respected. Could tell he was excited to let loose again

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

My quartehorse was named ringo. Got him from hastings for nothing when I was 15, he had a stroke and died a few years ago.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I was a farm girl and loved the cows. They have a massive curiosity that can lead them into trouble at times lol

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

They learn people too. Worked on a dairy farm with a prick that would hit the cows when he got frustrated, they would try to kick and shit

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

On him when he milked them. They were chill with me and I even had a few that would come great me in the field at milking times

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That guy was a fool. Seen a guy pitched backwards off his feet by a well placed hoof lol. He was ok but very bruised.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you every tried playing with them with a remote control car?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They like my 40$ drone. They love to chase it, and it makes opening gates by yourself a little easier.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm abaut to go into cattle myself. How much land do you estimate is needed per head?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Acre per head is usually safe. We have ~1400 cattle right now and lots of baby moos coming soon . We have over 1100 acres here.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah cows are cool until the neughbors herd circles you at night.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Imagine walking thru the fields/woods as a child on your goat farm with no flashlight when you hear this 900 pound animal running 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2/2 then two appear then 5 then 6..all you can see is their eyes reflecting the moon light..a 1300 pound beast step forth and you realize

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

3/2 either they think I have food or that I'm a threat.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Feeding silage for the first time and never flinched!? Mary that one!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm not going that far yet.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was morally conflicted about eating beef after one summer bonding with a cow who loved head scratches. Also liked to lick me!

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I would recommend upgrading your meat supply, so that you can eat beef in confidence, knowing up untill we eat them, they lived well.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Every animal needs a job. And their job is beef.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 5

Sad but true!! Btw, I LOVE meat..

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and cheese. it's like a walking cheeseburger

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I know you know cheese doesn't come directly from the cow, but your comment made me think about what if... and damn how cool would that be

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean the beef has to be seasoned and processed too so it's basically hamburger and cheese at same level

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unless they are dairy cows, you don't really want to eat them when they die

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They look like holstiens, but the comments made it sound like they were up for harvest. Maybe older cows that become burgers. Pretty common.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Old dairy cows should not be used for meat, its just not that good

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Stop I really like steak, ur making me feel guilty.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Those are dairy cows...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I Don't. One of them is going in my freezer next year.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

Eenie meenie minie moo.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It’s weird no matter how bad I feel when I know there steak for dinner I’m like oh yeah. But they look like they got it sweet till uh then.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

When you treat them well, feed them a proper diet with the right additions (salt, grain, silage) you get to taste your hard work.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

My man.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ambulatory proto-burgers are smarter than many realise.

8 years ago | Likes 203 Dislikes 2

They are. When your herd loves you, they show you. Last weekend when I camped out, they slept in an circle around my fire.

8 years ago | Likes 122 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 2

That's the most precious thing ever. I love cows!

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Are they meat or dairy? If the former, do you find it difficult to send them to slaughter?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Never. You send them off, but most have offspring so then you make friends with them.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That's what I want the person my steak comes from to think about farming. You seem like a nice dude.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey OP why don't you show everyone pics of when you send them to be killed? Is that not a part you show everyone & are proud of?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 85

who hurt you? the fuck

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

It pisses me off when farmers post this happy green fairytale BS & never talk about what happens after, as if they're helping the cows.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 17

Everyone is well aware of what Farmers do. These are animals raised to be food, not pets. They are not evil for doing it, or for enjoying it

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Found the vegan.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Found the non vegans.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not sure these are for meat. look like dairy?

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Dairy cows all get slaughtered after they stop producing milk. Sorry to be the bearer of inconvenient truths.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 33

No Problem. I'm sorry for you too.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What is that from?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You'd have to be pretty fucking stupid to ignore the fact that they're bred for our consumption. I assume you're from that group based 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

On your miserable tone and negative outlook. Get a cat.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Of course they are. We breed animals into lives of misery, we should stop breeding them

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

Don’t get a cat, they might feed them a vegan diet.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Congratulations, animals are killed for food all around the world, every day. Way to be angry at nature. Do you yell at thunderstorms too?

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

2 to something beyond our control. That is a first for me, considering I've discussed this a countless amount of times that's impressive pal

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

1 Definitely not the same as we can control whether or not we kill 56 billions animal per year. You actually compared our meat consumption

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

What you meant to say was "thanks for treating them with respect while they are alive" I used to think cows natural habitat was mud pits (1

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

Because that's how they were treated where I grew up. Then I moved and saw cows living in grassy fields with trees and it all hit me. (2

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Nah I mean: stop. killing. them. They don't want to die, you don't need to kill them, so just stop.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 33

And do what with the cows? Let them loose? They would die off in the wild in a few generations. They have been bred to be livestock.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah they taste good. Get off your high horse vegtard

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I firmly believe we should grind vegans and other mentally ill for Soylent green, so they trully meet their 0% impact goal. /s

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Op's dating profile probably went like this: taking care of 130 heifers looking forward to take care of 1 more.
