July 2014: I didn’t really think to take a “before” shot, but the area pre-bamboo-clearing is that overgrown thicket in the back.

I’ve knocked most of the bamboo down, and we’re about to have tree removal specialists remove the two-stalk tree in the middle.

The trees come down, instead of having the wood hauled away we ask them to leave it, cut into 2-foot sections. My wife is somewhat concerned about the volume of wood strewn about our yard.

The kids are less concerned.

I'm doing just fine.

With the trees down, it’s time to get to work clearing the brush from the overgrown area. I’m blessed with some great helpers!

Cleaning up this mess is no fun. I’m spending a lot of the weekends between our house and the conservation center, disposing of refuse.

A portion of our backyard was once a pond. In 1929 the town tore down our train station and filled in the pond with its remains. We find parts of the old train station everywhere we dig. It’s great for my kids, because who doesn’t want a train station buried in their backyard?

We also find other cool stuff, like this old Boy Scout beltbuckle

with the area cleared,

I start roping off a perimeter

The fun arrives.

With the playset built, it's time to build a retaining wall for all that mulch. Fortunately, we have a lot of a particular building material laying around.

Burying all the logs 9-12 inches deep leads us to hitting a lot of roots

and small rocks

that turn into large pieces of train station (son for scale)

The wall is coming along (bonus: there is a fox in this picture)

My neighbor George, an awesome dude in his late sixties, becomes my coworker.

PsBattle: Two men, some logs and a playground

Promontory summit!

Teamwork makes the dream work. Never forget it.

A sight to behold.

Complete.

After peer review we have decided, yes, this is good dadding. Carry on, sir.

I second that.

Imagine not having kids and putting all of this effort into something for yourself to enjoy! I love being selfish! And I hate kids! Yay!

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Not gonna lie, I'm pretty upset they cut the trees down

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

It kinda looked like they were all rotted out.. maybe it was completely dead? Otherwise, yeah, I agree.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My kids would like to know if they can come over.

11 years ago | Likes 98 Dislikes 1

The loving look your daughter is giving those shovels in #6 makes me worry for you, OP.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

So, you think you're better than me?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You've got a big fucking yard OP. Excellent work, my son would be jealous.

11 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

Seriously, I live in the city and the size of that yard alone makes me want to cry.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Why would you remove the trees?

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

I think they were rotting. The pic with the kids in the hollow logs shows how bad they were.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That was just the one big tree. He removed a whole thicket of smaller ones.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

a.k.a. "I cut down a bunch of trees to make my suburb even more suburban."

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you do anything to prevent those logs from rotting away? If not, I give it five years before they need to be replaced.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I have the same question

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Another triumph in Man's crusade to turn North America into one big lawn!

11 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 2

I'd have kept the bamboo and trees tbh

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

You're an awesome dad. Good job, op.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Now go slide down that slide, you deserve it

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I love these type of posts, they make me feel like I've accomplished something.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone that was raised in New Jersey, I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that is New Jersey. Looks so much like home.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's New Jersey!

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hoagies or subs?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hahah, let's see you compete with that one, "mom"!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Definitely right call to take out that hollow old tree, it is not healthy and it could break in a storm...

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

...But I'm sad no replacement was planted. Big yard trees are wonderful to have and the grow time is a lifetime.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're an awesome dad. Good job, op/

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

My dad made me a tree house, a zipline, and taught me how to use the electric plane and jigsaw to make wooden swords, before I was 10.

So...is there a boy scout buried in your backyard?

11 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

Asking the real questions.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I found the Boy Scout buckle disturbing as well. Any number of concerning scenarios come to mind. Why would a boy be separated from his...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...belt buckle unless he was being separated from his pants too?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

some of those belt buckles come off real easy, i know from experience and failing uniform inspection

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

we had the "prairie flower" shaming ceremony for anyone who had lost an item IIRC

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that sounds terrifying! our troop used to do "gray squirrel" :)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am always curious as to what people do with these playgrounds after the kids are grown up.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They tear them down and create ponds.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they tear them down one day while your in high school without even telling you THANKS MOM

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The grandkids get to use it!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They tear it down and plant a lot of bamboo instead.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah. Just plant a single shoot of bamboo, then wait a week.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yea but that other guy made a Lego sailboat sooo

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only issue I see is lack of space at the bottom of the slide. Should be 6' minimum. Logs aren't fun to bash your head on.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Dont show this post to the Ents, guys

11 years ago | Likes 216 Dislikes 2

They'll talk forever, then agree that these two kids aren't goblins, but Hobbits.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A wizard should know better!

Burarumm

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hoom! Hoom! To the entmoot!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Soooo you cut down 3 grown trees for this? Couldn't the kids play in the shade?

11 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 1

the phrasing in combination with your name raises a few questions

11 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

That's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

maybe not... stinkbeard

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He already has two kids, I doubt he wants another one.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

first get rid of your stinkbeard

If he doesn't, I got you, @Stinkbeard.

I put together a bike this weekend so same thing but it might be kind of tough since I had a vasectomy but we can still practice a lot

Unnecessary comma

11 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 5

I, think you mean, the Walken, comma?

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

The Walken comma is no punctuation. He has all traces of punctuation removed from his script copy funnily enough.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I assume they forgot the second this, making it: This, this is...

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It was meant to add emphasis to the "This". Personally I go: *This*. But to each their own.

Emm, so... can i come over ?

11 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

I like the trees more, am i a bad human?

11 years ago | Likes 161 Dislikes 11

Nope. You appear to be the Lorax.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I thought it was funny.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol, thanks. Nice to know there are still a few people out there with a sense of humor.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I grew up with a completely overgrown backyard. Best forts ever.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Coulda made a sweet tree house in that V tree and it would have remained cool as the kids got older. They're gonna grow out of the swing set

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

As someone with a lot of trees, they fucking blow come fall.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It didn't look healthy, they may have had other reasons, but I'm sure OP will plant a few more now that the playground is finished!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is a perfect example of modern human behavior: Cut down natural play equipment (tree house?) to put in artificial play equipment.

11 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 5

Well call me a corporate slave to the machine, but you get a lot more variety and safer fun out of a ground-level playground.

Cut down hundreds of underpaid Chinese workers to build your computer which you can use to be an armchair activist, more like.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 9

It seems my comment hit a nerve with you. I am making an observation. You are free to disagree, but there's no need to try to insult me.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

My comment is no more personal than yours.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This isn't activism, it's just simply sensible.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Nope cutting down all those trees was unnecessary

11 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 8

I'd assume the tree was half-dead anyway, given that the kids are standing inside the logs...better cut it down before it lands on the roof.

11 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Considering there's quite a few more trees in and around their yard, cutting it down isn't a major loss.

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 8

I mean, the last thing earth needs is less trees.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 5

In the US

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Do you know how many fucking trees earth has

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

Yeah yeah

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

A lot less than it use to?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I entirely agree on the scale of forests, fields, even clear cutting a whole yard but this is one tree. Big deal.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Plus they repurposed it for family enjoyment.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah I was thinking tire swing.
