I somehow remembered Samwise Fischer going on a stealthy orc murder spree from when I read it as a teen. My most recent reread was mildly disappointing in that regard.

According to the Shire'a novelist Tommason Clansus, he did.

Trivia: when in the film Sam first steps into shot to challenge Shelob it is Peter Jackson who holds Sting, and it was filmed in the vein of a western duel.

Ye. I just found that out like a month or two ago. You always learn. ^_^

Sam was a ring bearer though and man do I wish that the Jackson movies had shown the ring trying to tempt Sam because I love that bit in the book and how the old animated version showed it.

SAMWISE, THE STRONG!

They did alright with 12 hours and 7 minutes. Not everything from the books could fit. Even Tom Bombadil would have needed at least half an hour to somewhat explain. And on top of that; Tolkien doesn't even know what he is.

Oh I know, everyone that loved the LotR boosk has their favorite little nugget of the books that didn't make it into the films, there are quite a few (scourging of the Shire), the temptation of Samwise is just mine. Also like I get leaving out Bombadil honestly. He explains how the ring actually works and what it really does but that doesn't actually do anything to move the story forward. His only meaningful contribution to the actual story is getting the barrow wight sword in the hand of Merry

Ye. I'm glad Peter left the scourging out entirely. When I finished the book I reread the beginning in pursuit of an unscarred feeling. I couldn't deal with Sharky's bullshit.

Well that and the previous rescue of the hobbits

Well, yes, but if the hobbits had just gone along The Road to Bree (and not been caught by Black Riders, I can't remember if they actually avoided them by going through The Old Forest) they would have "only" not had the barrow-swords or the meeting with Bombadil. Very different, but also very the same.

They did go in the old forest because of the nazgul. So without Tom they'd die then and there.
