And my husbands grand parents go there every year, even twice a year.

And for Christmas, the family decided we should all go! *gulp*

Now as a quick google search will show most people, it's beautiful and well worth the trip.

But the preferred method of getting there is in these things.

Well I guess I could say I'm not the biggest fan of them.

Because of derps like this.

And so, because his grand parents are great people I decided, after much debate, that I would go. I know it's a trip that will be amazing. But that doesn't mean I'm not apprehensive about the flight still.

Before I go to the doctors for sedatives of some sort, I want to try and mentally prepare myself. I'm a big believer that it's a mental thing, and with work my mind can be calmed.

And so after much reading up on how planes fly, how they work, crash rates/statistics, the people who fly/attend them, the people in the control towers, as well as reading on how to control your fear, I've taken time to go to the airport and watch the flights take off and be in that sort of environment. But I still get flutters.

I guess I'm just looking to see what others might have as tricks to stay calm and how you might work through your fear of flying (or any other fears).

Everyone loves that drunk that vomits the whole flight.

Honestly, I love watching the take off, being on board an airplane of course. It gives some good perspective in how small I am in life too.

I always meet the pilot. Makes me feel better. And I get wicked drunk.

The worst part about flying is being 4 hours into the flight with 5 hours left and you have already seen every damn thing they have on TV!

My dad allways gives me great advice before flying. Keep your passport in your hand so that you are identified faster after the crash.

Required statistic spiel: You're more likely to die on the way to the airport. Aviation is one of the most regulated civilian industries

No worries. Odds are you'd crash in the ocean and everyone knows planes come equipped with flotation devices for every passenger.

I've flown many, many times, and I still get butterflies during takeoff. Once you get off the ground, it's pretty simple until the landing.

On my first flight (9h alone when I was 16) I was really scared before, but it was so fucking interesting, I forgot I was scared!

Xanax + 2 Crown and Cokes. Source: I slept 80% of the flight from California to Shanghai.

I've heard untying your shoes can get the blood to circulate better, especially on an airplane with cabin pressure. Otherwise, relax! :D

Minor airlines aren't even allowed to look at a pilot until they have at least 1,000 hours. Major airlines require significantly more

And those hour requirements just increased. Many low hour pilots are angry, because this means more time and money, but FAA wants the best

The sunburn you get in Hawaii is more likely to harm you than the airplane.

Yeah...thats right...give him/her more reasons to be afraid :D

Most of the time the fear of flying is a fear of not being in control. Talk to the pilot. Ask to see the cockpit. Tell him you're nervous

Show him your box cutter

When wanting to meet the pilot, who do you tell, and when? The folks at the gate before boarding, or the attendant as you get on?

Flight attendant as you get on

No problem. There is no guarantee they'll say yes, but pilots are usually happy to. Best of luck, and enjoy your trip!
