If someone said a ballon has zero holes, then pokes 1 hole, then another, it would have 2 holes. If the holes connect and you shape the balloon long and cylindrical, you'd have a straw, WITH 2 HOLES. (poke a hole into the side of a straw, and now you have 3 HOLES, all connected)
