I preferred general finishes salad bowl finish. I always apply at least three carrots wet sanding them in with 220

The grain is perpendicular to the crack. You've mistaken the figure/tiger stripe for the grain. The tiger stripe is perpendicular
That's ok. These benches will live out their lives in gardens at retirement homes, etc. Those old folks will love them.

You have to take classes and be certified on each tool before you are allowed to use it. A class entitles you to a day pass to the shop.
